It was Raul Julia's (M,Bison the villain)last movie. He was suffering from stomach cancer and had just returned after chemotherapy. He died within months of the movie's release.He did it as a dying gift for his children who loved the game

This is a guilty pleasure movie for me. Mostly, I loved Raul Julia's M Bison (he's up there with Frank Langella's Skeletor as my favorite thespians playing villains); Kylie's Cammy was actually adorable, and Ming Na's Chun-Li was just badass. And that guy playing Zangief was frickin' hilarious. Even as a kid I was confused why Guile doesn't sound American and he's my least favorite character, along with Ken.

That line was pretty stupid if you ask me. If you're gonna make a fighting movie based on the game, Don't have the characters act like idiots. You played the game with each character and each of them has their own story ending. They all sounded serious. I know that line sounded funny, To me That shouldn't be in the movie like this. This is an action movie, not a comedy. Is the game itself a comedy? No. It's a fighting video game. If it was something like Earthworm Jim, That would be pretty reasonable. This whole movie is just trash.

4:30 The guy playing Sawada was a Chinese film star that the studio FORCED the writers to include in the movie. It was discussed on a podcast over the last few years. His English wasn’t good enough to play Ryu so they made a new character with hardly any dialogue.

As an adaptation of a popular videogame franchise, this is an insult to all the kids (like me) who blew dozens of dollars worth of quarters on the arcade cabinets. As a kid, I remember being totally disappointed in this suckfest of a movie. Not only does the story focus on the wrong character (Guile instead of Ryu) but none of the special moves resemble those depicted in the game. If you see what passes for Sh-Ryu-Ken and Tatsumaki Senpuu Kick in this film you will laugh your ass off.

Looking back at Raul Julia's M.Bison, I can tell he was really having fun playing that character. It's shame he died after this movie, what a way to go. But I bet when saw what Bison looked like, he figured out how to portray this character and made it his own.

I actually like this movie much better than the animated one. At least this one is a lot of fun, it has a story and I always found that most of the characters (except T. Hawk, who was just there) got his/her chance to shine. This is actually my favorite movie of all time due to it's way of combining humor and action for the family.

+Oliver Harper, at 8:03, when you said that the pan and scan version of the movie felt like the video game, however I actually found out in the commentary that the director said that the pan and scan version was more faithful to some of the images for the TV material within the film.
@alextan1478
@alextan1478 8 жыл бұрын
In the scene on a small TV screen of Bison and Guile, the filmmakers referenced those shots when creating the full screen version for the film's VHS release.
@alextan1478
@alextan1478 6 жыл бұрын
And at 7:56, you did say that the director made little use of the scope format and that it looks like it's made for television. In actuality, no audience can follow two characters on both ends of the screen. According to Jost Vacano, the center of the frame is where the story is and the sides are the atmosphere. Also, the film was shot in Super 35 which was common for many films in the 1990's since it allowed the filmmakers to reframe their shots by adding some of the already exposed areas within the scope frame. In the case of this film, they did protect for 4x3.

@Oliver Harper Have you heard of Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist? It is probably the most loyal video game to film translation to date. It sounds like you haven't seen it, but you should. It is clearly a labor of love by all those involved in it and it shows through in the film. It is basically an uncompromisingly loyal depiction of Street Fighter on film, which accounts for what some might see as its faults but which is also, and I think I speak for most, the reason it is TOTALLY AWESOME.

Back in the day I could hold the console or stand up playing Chun-Li or Cammy, and I was OK with Guile. I had Super Street Fighter II Turbo on the 3DO. Oliver mentions that this film is like a 007. It's also very much like the GI Joe cartoon that was an 80s classic.

EVERYONE LOVES KYLIE! Fun Fact: they DID do the special moves, only to scrap them because the visual effects weren't working and filled in the fight scene gaps with second unit work. Bonus: DeSouza didn't want to incorporate all the characters but relented to Capcom's demands as production troubles mounted. The dude wasn't a good fit but it really was a perfect storm of awful circumstances and I find it difficult to significantly blame him for the mess.

The film clearly went over your head then. Like Starship Troopers, it's campy and over the top on purpose, just on a much more surface level. As for the acting and action sequences, almost all of the choreography and dialogue was improvised on the spot, so the cast just had fun with it (and it shows). No one involved with this film was under the impression that they're making the Casablanca of video game adaptations. The whole thing was put together in just over a year, as well, including editing and everything. And lastly, Raul Julia's performance as M. Bison is a masterclass in classical cinema and method acting. Streetfighter is brilliant! Edit: I used to have the game on Sega Saturn. Now I'm motivated to go find an emulator.

This is one my favorite bad movies, and holds a special place amongst my group of friends. My best friend and I have had no end of laughs watching this epic-fail masterpiece. Raul Julia's performance as Bison is comparable to Frank Langella as Skeletor I think, in that he so overpowers every other performance in the film he becomes a spectacle in and of himself. Funny thing though, if you forget it's based on Street Fighter, it becomes an almost perfect G.I. Joe movie.

Whenever I played Street Fighter II as a child, I always chose Guile, because I thought he was just like my hero Van Damme, so when I saw that there was going to be a Street Fighter movie made and that he was going to play him, I thought my Christmases had all come at once. Unfortunately, it was another example of adults underestimating the intelligence of its core audience and consequently dumbing it down. A much better idea would have been to make it more like Bloodsport and make it about an international street fighting tournament. It practically writes itself if you base it on the principles of the game and flesh out the characters.

10:25 you ARE kidding about the arcade game being more fluid than MK3 right??? It looked and played like PitFighter which was the precursor to MK1 and came out in 1990. It felt like five years behind the times.

An alternate and extended opening scene, depicting Chun-Li reporting on the news and attempting to speak with Guile, who is preoccupied with his own business. Fei-Long's commercial clip in the opening was removed before the live of GNT News.
