“The street is a fantastic space wherein everything unfolds; everything is possible and everything is seen. In other words, the street reveals existence."
“It's magical to allow yourself to go with the flow”, says Danish documentary photographer Krass Clement, who has been working on the street for decades with his camera.
“If I want to frame my own existence, I can just go out on the street and mirror myself in the lives on the street. That is what street photographers do.”
“Thousands of details are in play to create the narrative. Sometimes you also read things into it that aren't true. This is very common, but perhaps there's always a grain of truth.”
Krass Clement compares street photographing with being a poet:
“The poet is immersed in his or her sensory apparatus and must grasp everything in a split second and convey it.”
“It's a very beautiful and lyrical occupation because it's just about being. It's as simple as that. You just are.”
Krass Clement was born in 1946 in Copenhagen, Denmark. He was educated as a film director from the Danish Film School in 1973, but he established himself as a documentary still photographer. Clement spent much of his childhood in Paris, and his father, Kay Christensen, was a painter and his mother, Anna Katharina Tvermoes, was a pianist. He began to photograph in the late 1950s. Krass Clement published his first photographic work in 1978, ‘Skygger af øjeblikke’ (Shadows of Moments). While much of Clement’s work was first presented in exhibitions, by the 1990s, Krass Clement had turned to books as his preferred medium. Clement’s photographic work is part of various prominent collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Biblioteque Nationale, Paris, Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen. Krass Clement lives in Copenhagen.
