Street Running Train Runs Red Light! Train Goes Through Green Light In Middle Of Street!

Rare street running train on lightly used tracks in the middle of the road. The train went through a green light on this Norfolk Southern Railroad branch line in Franklin, Ohio. Other street runner trains that I have seen have had the traffic signals coordinated with the train movements. This one was not like that. Filmed September 27, 2019 at 1:23pm. This was a very busy line until Conrail took over and lost most of the customers. The tracks cross the Great Miami River and then go down the middle of West 6th Street. They end at the only customer on this side of the river, R Good Industries Franklin Yards. The tracks are only used as needed, which amounts to only a couple times a week. I was filming this endangered line for historical purposes when I got lucky and heard the horn of the approaching train. It was pure luck. I have been here a few other times and never really thought that I would get lucky to see a train on these rusty tracks. Today I noticed the rust on the rails had an imprint of tire tracks. I was telling my friend that a hirail truck had recently been on the tracks and that was a good sign that maybe they were planning on running something soon. Just as I was checking how thick the rust was I could hear the train horn about a mile away. It ran slow across the line and took so long to get to us that I thought maybe it was a train on a different line across the river that I heard. I filmed the train approaching and working the customer and I filmed it at a couple other crossings. I will post that video also if this one does okay. Trains operate on 160.980 Channel 58 on this line. Ohio has very few street running locations and I have only seen a few other videos of trains on this line and they were older videos. This is the Franklin Industrial Lead and the trains are local L3A based out of Moraine, Ohio, per another railfan. Btw, an hour before I filmed this train I saw a train in Sharonville, Ohio with a blue Conrail caboose on the end and a geep in the middle of the short train. Thanks for watching! I live about a mile from the location where you filmed this. The building on the right at 0:45 is actually my local mechanic's shop. In the four years I've lived here, driving past this line at least several times a week, I've only seen a train here on one prior occasion. I caught the recently-rebuilt #3232 (a former high-hood) running light, headed back across the river to the mainline. The crew parked the unit in front of the station (about where the locomotive is at 1:10) and the conductor jumped off to grab some ice cream at the Mr. Frosty right next door. When they're working this line, I can hear the horn from my house. In the past, I'm pretty sure they've usually run the switching operations in the pre-dawn hours. Not sure if that's changed recently. About two years ago NS replaced the grade crossing at 73 and Dixie Highway (upper corner of the map at 4:23) so hopefully they'll keep operating this little line for a long time to come. Unfortunately I have my doubts, since the building that R Goode's currently occupying is in pretty poor condition. Once upon a time, if you'd stood in the same place you filmed and looked toward the station, you'd have seen the old box plant looming up in the background (behind the Dollar General) - one of the former rail-served industries. They started demolishing the factory about a month and a half ago - which is good, since it was about ready to fall down on its own anyway. From what research I've done (and don't take my word as gospel on this), this trackage was built as the mainline for the Cincinnati, Jackson and Mackinaw Railroad, which became the Cincinnati Northern, which was folded into the Big Four (CCC&StL), which was acquired by the New York Central, which became Penn Central, which became Conrail, and is now Norfolk Southern. A surprising amount of history on this line.

I think street running is STUPID in principle. Putting trains and automobiles together is just as dumb (and just as large as a mass difference) as putting bicycles and automobiles together. But it's still a wicked impressive thing to see, too.

The people in town must know that the train moves slow, that’s why so many ran across the tracks while 5he car was almost to the edge of the street. That or the conductor holding the red flag was radioing the engineer telling him that there was traffic coming. I enjoyed watching the train running down the middle of the street. I'm tell Jaw Tooth that's not dirt, that's the New Playground! You just didn't realize it when you got it. But you should know it by now from the glimpses that we have caught of it in your videos! And don't tell me you wasn't all over a good ole pile of dirt when you was a kid. It may actually be the cheapest and safest thing you can ever buy for kids to play on and ten years later you actually then can do what you want with it. It's more fun watching them play on it anyway. And soon they will grow up and wanna be on a cell phone all the time. So let them all be kids as long as you can. Some day we will wonder where all those good times went. It would be worth all the money in the world to be a kid again, if I lived next to you Jaws I'd be on your dirt pile! Love ya man. Trains are not subject to vehicle traffic controls. They are governed by a completely different system. He did everything right per that system. There was a spotter on the back with a radio, the train moved at the appropriate speed and it used the horn at the mandatory places. As for your complaint, that's an issue for the local traffic authority. It's on them to install sensors to trip the traffic lights to allow right of way for the train. But considering the quality of the area and low frequency, it simply isn't an issue.

Here's some info for you and your viewers: Those 2 covered hoppers at the beginning: • NAHX is either G. E. Railcar Services Corp. or Wells Fargo Rail Corp. (and probably not the second one) • ALHX is General American Marks Co. NS #6155 is an SD40-2, was originally built in May of 1978 as N&W 6155, and was rebuilt on February 12th, 2014. As you might know, the SD40s and (I think) the SD38s were built on SD45 frames to reduce production costs of these locomotives, because one frame instead of 3 is cheaper to mass produce. The frames were long enough to fit the 20-cylinder prime mover of the SD45, thus the "porches" at either end of the locomotive. The SD38 & SD40 only have a 16-cylinder prime mover, and are similar in size because the primary difference is how they are aspirated, a blower versus a super-turbocharger (geared at low RPM / exhaust pressure, and thus resembling a supercharger), and so also the total horsepower

Hey Brian (Jawtooth) I live near the old Delco Products plant (now Tenneco) in Kettering Ohio. There is a train line that used to go to I believe Morrow Ohio. It still serves Tenneco with tanks of chemicals. Some of the rest of the line is now Iron Horse Bike path. Tenneco is last on the line, it ends at Delco Park. Anyway it runs a few times a month. There's a huge switch yard in Dayton, I once worked next to it. Could you come up here sometime? I'm close to the Air force Museum too. Maybe the grandkids would like to see it, it's really nice.

The line you're talking about used to go to Lebanon down in Warren County and was once part of the "Dayton ,Lebanon & Cincinnati "(DL&C) Railroad . I know it may sound crazy given its current state but this actually used to be the Cincinnati Northerns mainline between Sharronvill(connecting with Cincinnati) and Jackson MI. My model railroad club models this exact railroad and we have this town on our layout. So I guess you could say I've done this street-run many times just in HO scale.

No picture or video right now but I'll keep you posted. I think a group of clubs have around the Cincinnati area are having an open house day this month. When I find out I'll let you know. We are located in Ross Ohio.

Nice catch! I caught 6155 in Dayton on Thursday running between the Moraine and Dayton yards. Video is on my Dayton Railfan channel.

SO, like, there once was a rail road here, and then someone thought, hey lets pave a road here and then build up our town on the tracks. That basically how these road running trains happen?
