Absolutely been one of my better purchases this year. And now this same team is working on a TMNT side scrolling beat em up? Fuck yes!

I used to rent streets of rage 2 from video stores all the time as a kid. I never owned it but it’s a big part of my childhood. Now I’m old and jaded, and I always thought modern developers couldn’t make games like they used to. Well, streets of rage 4 surprised the balls off of me and I love it to bits. It’s so well made. Definitely in my favorite games of all time list!

My wife who barely cares about games told me yesterday, "that game has really cool music."

The first time Mr X spawned in the SoR2 boss map with scan lines, I actually had to pause the game. My son is named after my stepfather. I got SoR2 at release and played it religiously with my stepfather. We beat it so many times together I've lost count. I can't wait to beat this one with him.

The soundtrack of this DLC was created by Tee Lopes, a composer from Portugal If you liked his ost, you should check the game Sonic Mania 😉

SoR4 is just straight up incredible. The training room is hella tight.

My favorite addition “on top of everything else you mentioned” is the alternative outfits and color schemes for characters. That’s such a nice touch.

DLC characters get that DLC character privilege too. They are SO strong!

Nice to see a review by someone who has some experience in the game, not that other reviews are bad, but sometimes if the reviewer is new to the game or just a casual player (which often can be seen in the captured footage) they can miss out on the depth the game has when talking about it.

been playing this series since day 1 (bare knuckle 1989). the more i played, the more i in love with this series. seeing this sor4 after more than 2 decades later, and they're doing it right, every step of the way, it's like another honeymoon all over again. kudos

When Streets of Rage 2 came out I spent years playing it over and over and over again with the same friend for about 4yrs, it was just something about it that no other game like it had, this remake is no disappointment at all, they nailed it and the dlc is just more fun stuff, how can this go wrong at this point

Glad this game is getting so much love. I played the hell out of this game as a kid and as a young adult when the emulators came out. Now I get to play this awesome modern version with hopes of the series continuing. We need new versions of Skate, Dr. Zan and the enemies that havent been updated yet. Then some new characters for any upcoming games. The future looks bright.

In my top 3 for 2020 (Nioh 2 and Doom Eternal) and now it’s even better….

Really wish they at least added online 4 player gameplay

I feel really bad for people who have a Switch right now. The DLC still hasn't hit the eshop. I have the dlc on the xbox but haven't got around to it yet. Good to know it makes a good game better.

This was one of those very rare cases where the add-on was actually more fun than the official game itself! It has much better replay value than the actual base game for certain, with it almost always being something different, while anxiously building up your perks and what not. That despite with how cheap, and frustrating the enemies and stuff are, along with especially the annoying "trap levels" in survival mode. But it's still a great deal, and the new characters, along with the added moves to the old ones was what allowed me to get all of the trophies in S.O.R. 4 at last too!

I hope this DLC sells well enough that we get another one. I'd love a DLC with playable versions of the original games, and also a SOR4 playable version of Roo (since they added his SOR3 version as an unlockable). But DLC aside, I think they could add plenty of QoL changes in upcoming patches. For instance, I'd love to see a in-game emote system to allow communication with other players, where you can send specific lines such as "Thank you!", "Sorry!", or "This is for you.". That alone would solve a problem for communication when you don't wanna use voice chat.

Shiva was the bodyguard to Mr X in Streets of Rage 2 (Sega MD), even on two player, he was utterly unstoppable.

Great review! I'm about 2/3rds through unlocking all of the new moves and it has taken me 25 hours 🤯... In total on my switch I'm up to 325 hours into SoR4. It's legitimately a masterpiece

Streets of Rage 4 is really great. The only complaints I have are unmemorable bosses and less grit compared to previous games. But overall the gameplay, visuals and art style are amazing.

I wish we had a grown up Skates and reworked Roo in the updated high res graphics.

This DLC is awesome. I can't stop playing it. We can wait for Skate, Zan with Streets of Rage 4 artstyle and Diva as the next Dlc characters.

This game reminds me of my childhood

Just thought I'd mention that the game (base game at least) is on Gamepass, so if you already have that then it's definitely worth a try.

Congratulations on being the only content creator on the site that knows about Estel's switch-side-throw. It's been blowing my mind that no one seems to even know it's their, almost as badly as people who don't seem to know you can mash to extend her original offensive special into an AoE.

Streets of Rage is my favorite Sega IP, the original trilogy released before I was born, but nonetheless I discovered the 2nd game at a young age and it instantly became my favorite 16 bit video game, the previous installment and JP version of the 3rd not too far behind, I love this series and It's so good to see you covering it, I literally just watched your first video on it yesterday and loved it. SoR4 was something I never thought would happen but to see it be a reality and be this damn good and performing this well leaves me speechless, It took a bit for this game to click with me admittedly but it's really grown into the best beat em up arguably since SoR2 imo, lives up to the name. My only quarrel with this game for real is just the story and the neglect of the character Skate, He has always been my favorite fighter in the series, and I don't want to delve to deep, but I related to him being a black kid who also greatly looked up to an older sibling and I adore his less traditional and more fun approach to both his charisma and fighting style, my favorite beat em' up character hands down. but aside from his retro variations he makes no appearance in this game whatsoever, I understand most of the development related reasons for why he's not playable, but I think after 26 years he deserved a mention at the very least especially considering his brother and niece are both playable here, saying nothing only makes his absence more jarring and if you've been around the block, read as many interviews for this game pre and post release it doesn't just seem to be development reasons as to why he doesn't return, it's more that a lot of the devteam were never fans of him in the first place, so there likely was never much consideration for the guy to begin with, It stings tbh. SoR was never story driven but I felt the first two games tell a simple but engaging story with absolutely nothing but an opening text crawl, other than this they allowed the levels to tell the story until the final boss was defeated and you got a series of ending images. The third while over the top by the end, ups the ante and gave us a great conclusion that felt definitive, I was hoping 4 would do more to world/character build because that's the only thing I don't feel the series does better than it's inspiration(Final Fight) but nah it's kind of the most nothing plot you can think of, this was definitely a gameplay and aesthetic above all else sorta deal, and it's unfortunate because those aspects are done so well, I really want to like Floyd and Cherry beyond their functions, but they literally have no stake in the story and are just there. Really I adore this game though and am so happy to see the series having achieved a greater reach than ever and getting this much care and acclaim in the present day, its just little personal things that I feel get in the way of me enjoying it to the same extent everyone else seems to, but what's here is so close to perfection.

Me and the homies started at 9pm finished at 11am 2 5hour energy each and some nos. Was all worth it. Took long because of the final twin boss so many rages and frustrations. Can’t wait to play it this weekend with them again

Glad you mentioned the Menu’s. I was thinking how slick they are. As much as I like M2’s retro conversions, I think they could learn a lot from how these are implemented.

being able to hit enemies on the ground is quite a rare feat in beat em ups the very first beat em up (nekketsu kouha kunio-kun/Renegade) has OTG, heck technos beat em ups allowed you to punch enemies on the ground (double dragon & the kunio kun games)

i would love a final fight remake this game is amazing and the dlc is probably the best dlc added to a game

I wound up dominating survival and blowing past level 30 with Max's clothesline Blitz attack. Level that sucker up with the toxic and the other type of Blitz enhancements and he becomes basically invincible.

I am very happy that Roo is playable again, now I hope SOR4 Roo becomes a playable character with new moves since we saw him in the background and NOW has a SOR4 artwork illustration. PS, I don’t think Max’s grab is a choke hold it looks like a bearhug.

HD 2D sidescrollers with hand drawn art are my favorite games. This one has been great. Need to get this DLC or the new Deluxe release.

I saw the title and thought, really? But it came out last year. But then realised I've been playing the DLC a hell of a lot for past 5 days, probably more than any other game this year so yeah alright I'll go with it. :) When I first heard of the DLC it just seemed like "3 new characters and a survival mode" but there's a WHOLE LOT OF STUFF in it really and opens up so many more possibilities for play styles and combos and just everything and additions to moves for the original characters making them a lil customisable too is great. I love it. One of the best DLCs I've ever bought. So much more depth to it than first appears. And all that extra retro content in there too. :)

The Survival mode is what I needed to come back to this game. I love it, but I have one gripe that is common for games with modes like this. It just becomes about cheesing. Floyd, Estel for example have moves with so many I frames that you just spam them back and forth in a fairly mindless way. Oh well, it's still fun.

I like how Street of rage 4 reminds me so much of God Hands gameplay wise, sure it doesn't have the deep custom combo but its close.

Training mode was also included without the DLC, with just the new update. Also the new skins for the players and Mania+.

I first played the game because of the artstyle, it reminded me a lot of the hyperkinectic work of Joe Madureira. But it wasn't enough for me to invest in the game. But now, I'll probably end up buying it alltogether for my new Switch

This is like So4: Hyper Ultra Championship EX Edition plus Knucles. It's a bloody joy. That being said, and I say this as someone who still watches anime to this day, the art style (not the technical stuff like lighting which is fantastic), still leaves much to be desired. I know people complained at first about it being too 'cartoony', I on the other hand felt the style was trying for an anime aesthetic but still felt too western. I know it's a minor gripe especially when the controls, music and atmosphere are spot on. Did I mention the music, because I never thought any game would have such iconic music like the previous games, but after playing this for a while the music definitely lives up to the pedigree. Especially with the OST playing and changing in real-time. Absolutely brilliant stuff here.

What platform is this for?

I've been a Blaze player since I was a kid, and that's probably how it will stay. New characters are a great touch, though. I wish blaze could run!

I still only play the game with the retro tunes, but I'm glad you made a video for this and mentioned the music. I bought the game the day it came out, played it for a few hours and haven't really gone back to it since. You've sold the DLC.

Does Survival mode give you points towards unlocking characters?

Played with nephews, its like the past meets the modern age. Whats crazy is i played the series growing up and now my nephews can play it in a brand new yet nostaglic way. Lovee it

If anyone needs a tip to try to get to stage 30+ of Survival for all the reward unlocks, I can't recommend Cherry enough (once you unlock her alternate blitz attack). If you put as many upgrades on that blitz as you can and spam it constantly, it's very hard to go wrong, even on boss rounds.

This is the best review i think i see of the game. SOR4 is definitely a great game, im always was a fan of SOR3 and now they add much things from that game plus now we have survival and more moves, this game is my goty again! if you dont buy the game yet now is the best oportunity!

Back during the ancient nineties, Max was my bag on SOR2. Even though he is the slowest, he dispatches enemies way quicker, and out of all the characters I would finish levels with him the quickest. Ahh, those were the days. I remember buying the video game magazine with a SOR2, Echo the Dolphin VHS demo tape taped to it! I would watch it over and over.

One of my favorite comic book characters is someone called siegliende from a comic called uber and estel reminds me of her a lot all she needs is some kind of energy attack.

Ill just wait and get the anniversary edition coming out September 24. Comes with all DLC

I’ve been playing SOR since since 1995 and I was so excited to play SOR4 as a BIG KID I mean adult. 🤣 After 6 months the game for me fell off due too so many bugs. But with these new dates I am back grinding for hrs solo or in co-op. So much fun and a real challenge 😌 Truly Game of The Year 🥳

very thankful for the new alternate specials on the cast, especially SoR4 Axel; a lot of his original specials were high damage but had tons of recovery stuck onto them or were very slow, but most of his new specials help address this character flaw. Overall, still not one of the stronger characters in the game but he's definitely not bottom tier anymore.
