Today I discuss the differences between sodium carbonate and sodium bi-carbonate; which one you should use and how to convert one into the other!

So what is the ratio of this sodium carbonate to gallons of water?

Thanks Marcus, I've been using the Australian version of Randy's Recipe for a few years but never really understood why I was baking the bicarbonate. That also explains why it becomes a saturated solution and just won't dissolve that last little bit bicarbonate

This is great advice but here in the UK the power is so expensive that baking for one hour would defeat the expense part, although the PH part is super thank you for advice

I enjoy your channel! Hello from California. I am by no means a reef chemist or any kind of chemist but have looked into this before. I think one thing you failed to mention is that due to the solubility difference, Randy's recipe 1 uses 500 grams (about 2 ½ cups) of calcium chloride dihydrate and Sodium Carbonate (594 grams or about 2 ¼ cups) vs. recipe 2 that uses 250 grams (about 1 ¼ cups) of calcium chloride dihydrate and 297 grams of sodium Bicarbonate (about 1 1/8 cups) . So recipe 1 is twice as strong and has twice the ingredients by volume. This can be possible because the sodium carbonate is more soluble than the bicarbonate. What did your powder weigh after baking? was it really half as much? I didn't get this for a long time as I was used to dosing Sodium carbonate and apologies in advance if I got it wrong here. How about Sodium Hydroxide? Or mixing any of the 3? Lots of good info out there on different 2 Part recipes. Awesome that we have so many resources and lots of ways to dose two part with different effects on PH to fit you tanks needs and keep those corals growing.

Yes the weight will be about 60% of the original after baking in practice; this is due to the conversion from 2 NAHCO3 into NA2CO3; you offgas H20 and CO2. You are right sodium carbonate is far far more soluable than bicarbonate; as such stronger solutions are possible to be made. Sodium hydroxide is not reccommended I think because its insanely caustic, more dangerous for both your skin and the tank, it will cause local PH swings to a large degree and likely precipitation issues with other elements if you try and use it for the purposes of Alkalinity dosing. Calcium hydroxide (kalkwasser) is a better choice if you want to go down that route as it does both calcium and alkalinity in a balanced way and is safer and more stable to dose to the tank.

@Reef Nerd hello marcus.. I use AF KH buffer, example i baked 80gr sodium bicarbonate and After i baked its become sodium carbonate and the weight will be 60% right ? and that will be 48gr.. So i mix 48gr with 1 ltr ro to get the same formula dosing like AF component or 96gr sodium carbonate if i like to get formula dosing like AF component pro?

I buy sodium carbonate ready from BRS. Can you get their stuff in Australia? Or maybe another USP sodium carbonate just so you don't have to bake it.
@ReefNerd
@ReefNerd 2 жыл бұрын
Theres a fair few sources of sodium carbonate here, brands like Reef Anabolics, and 100% reef safe. But the biggest brands (Aqua Forest and Red Sea) are both Bicarb. BRS is not avalible in Australia

Great advice soda ash is quite hard to get. In the he states it seems easy but not so in the UK. Have you done a video on mixing and diluting with Mg and Ca. I'd be interested in how you balance theses elements and rate of dosage etc
