The horse's tail is an extension of the spine. So using the tail in exercises not only affects the tail itself but the spine all the way forward and this of course includes the back.
Using the tail can :-
- Stretch the muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and connective tissues within the spine
- Help influence the horse's balance and centre of mass, thereby stimulating recruitment of core postural muscles
- Encourage relaxation within the spine
- Help with realignment of the spine
- Influence nervous connections

I have a question about yanking the horses tail on a regular basis. I know a guy (mid 20s, very illiterate and arogant) who grabs horses by the tail in our stable and gives them a proper strong, abrupt and uncoordinated yank, as hard as his arms allow him. As a vet and someone who is interested in any form of body work on horses I am appalled and I actually screamed at him the other day when he did that to a mare I'm paid to work with after her competition. My sister works for his girlfriend (late 30s) and her stallion and sais since he started doing those tail pulls the stallion has shown progressive problems with coordination and strength in his hind quarters. I am worried he might be damaging the vertebrae in the sacral area, as it is a young stallion and I've seen videos of the pelvic regions of young horses (as young as 7 yo) that had improper or incomplete fusions of the vertebrae in that area due to horses simply stumbling and yanking their carts (trotters) since the age of 2

Thank you for making this video! I learned a lot and I subscribe to your channel to learn more. Are there any exercises with the tail that would help a horse with navicular?

Would not do those tail pulls from that position. If it hurts, he could kick you right well.

We recommend that you only do this exercise if your horse is not prone to kicking. As with all exercises we recommend that you introduce the exercise gradually so that the horse becomes used to the action. If the individual horse does not like the exercise we recommend that you do not use it.
