An easy way to cast on for a stretchy edge, great for socks and hats, and any edging that needs to stretch without ruffling.

This is by far the easiest stretchy cast on that I've been able to find. Thank you so much for demonstrating it!

Out of the many methods demonstrated on youtube, this was the only one I could wrap my head around. Thank you

Thank you. I heard you say that you ran out of "tail" yarn and had to rip it out and start again. I used to do this with long tail cast on until I thought of a trick that I always use now. Instead of guessing how much yarn to leave for the "tail" I just use one strand of yarn from the inside of the ball of yarn and a strand from the outside for the cast on. You will NEVER run out of yarn. Mary Ann's way....

I'd forgotten this trick- funny because I know it, yet still do long tail cast on & have to redo it for being too long or too short. Gotta put this one trick into action! I thought I invented that trick myself yrs ago- I'm sure I can't be the only one that thought of that idea on thier own, anyway- cheers

What a great cast-on technique. The edge it creates is so pretty it's like a style element in and of itself. Thank you SO much!!!

Wow! This is a great improvement over the "slip-knot cast on" which is so hard to get evenly on the needle. I must try this on a swatch since I am going to be knitting a pair of socks for the Ravellenic Games during the 2012 Olympics. Such a nice appearance when it snaps back after stretching.

Thank you so much! I've looked at so many other videos but couldn't figure this out no matter how hard I tried. This is very stretchy and will be my new default cast-on for socks, hats and mittens. It's very easy and looks great! Thanks for sharing and explaining so clearly!

Thank you so much for such a easy way, I had looked at several videos of a stretchy cast on and ended up more befuddled than ever but your method is just perfectly simple .... bless you!

I am currently learning to knit mittens. The pattern calls for the Italian cast on and for 1x1 ribbing. I like the look of 2x2 and the German Twisted cast on was too tight but this is PERFECT! And it is easy to knit and purl on the first row. Thank you for sharing this technique!

Thanks! This is so much easier than the slipknot caston. I used it on a hat and it was great. But, yeah, I ran out of tail yarn too the first time. It takes quite a bit more yarn than a regular longtail caston. Very helpful video.

I love this cast-on! I just started knitting 2 months ago (December 2015), and all the different kinds of cast-ons can be overwhelming. But I really like your stretchy and easy cast on. Thanks for making this video and I just subscribed to your channel. I am pinning this to Pinterest too! :)

I like your method to establish the size of the cast on stitches so that when I then switch over to the German Twisted Cast On, then I maintain the tension but it is faster for me. But it helped me to see what I was doing wrong and why the cast on I was doing was too tight. Thanks.

Good clear explanation. I like the long tail c.o. but it isn't always stretchy enough, so this should be great.

Take required stitch cast on number, divide it by ten.... then wrap yarn around your needle ten times, measure out this length however many times to get the length you need for your cast on... plenty for stitches required

I believe this is the German Twisted cast on but work in a slightly different way in that the initial loop is formed by your hand rather than on the thumb? See what you think. Great tutorial, the extra twist in the loop seems to allow for more yarn in the system and spaces the stitches slightly further apart.

I agree. I just watched a video that shows a similar method referred to as German Twist. I can't tell if the end result is identical, but they're very similar. This is much simpler kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rsxmpL2KtK3JeWQ.html

Take a piece of worsted and measure a piece from the tip of your nose to the end of your outstretched hand. Mark that length and knit it with some 6mm needles. Count the stitches. There's ya a guideline for how much long tail you need. Need twice as many stitches? Then it's 2x nose to hand.

1:30 til 1:33 is ALL WE NEED - the rest is filler, unnecessary & waste of time. Wish videographers would only post the instructions, & eschew hearing themselves talk & endless video of watching someone's hands wave around while they blah blah blah- then of course the ever-present video of them describing/displaying the yarn they use for the first 4 minutes....
