Three Ways to Make a Stretchy Cast On

When it comes to the names of the cast ons shown in this video, I don't know the proper name for the first cast on (I've known it for years and don't even remember how I learnt it). The second cast on is called Jeny's Stretchy Slipknot Cast-On. The third one is the Latvian cast on.

THANK YOU!!! for being the only person to make a video on stretchy cast ons which doesn't unnecessarily complicate the method. Even the way you do the first slip knot, so many youtubers add a ridiculous number of steps to something which is practically a basic knot

I have watched so many videos and never been able to grasp the long tail cast on, normally I pick up things fairly quickly but I’ve never been able to quite get it. Watching you do it with a double tail made it instantly click! Thank you ❤ thank you ❤ thank yiu❤

I love your tutorials - they're so clear and easy to follow. I'm trying the first method in this stretchy cast on tutorial, and I'm surprised that simply doubling the tail would create stretch, but it does seem to work!!

Wow!!! not only are you are a great teacher, (who gives very clear directions as well as a visually crisp presentation).... but your methods blew me away! They are far superior to others I was attempting. I wasted a lot of time today trying to master the Italian CO, and not satisfied with its appearance, I tried the cabled alternating rib, and lastly finding one that was easier to start. But all three made those tiny V’swhich are tight and don’t sit nicely even when carefully knit. None of them are as elegant as each your three. You are my go to gal from now on. Thank you.

Either of these methods will work fine, but the second one is a little bit finicky. In many cases when I need to make a stretchy cast on edge in my projects, I use the Latvian cast one (method #3 in this tutorial). Happy knitting :-)

I really like the look of #3 and your demonstration made it easy to follow. Is each loop worked separate or are these two loops considered one cast on.

Hi Mary. Every loop is worked as a separate stitch. Even though they are located so close to each other, resist the temptation to work them together :-)

You definitely make these stretchy techniques so much easier to follow. I'm making myself some boot cuffs my first is way too tight having done it with the LT cast-on, not thinking. Would the 2nd cast on be the best for pulling over a heel and then popping back once it's on my ankle? Thanks a lot! :D

Cathy, all of these cast ons are stretchy and will work great for boot cuffs. The good thing about the second way is that it is quite firm and will hold shape nicely. Happy knitting :-)

I usually do knit 2 purl 2 rib cast on. I noticed that once the hat is worn a few times the band tends to stretch quite a bit sometimes losing its shape. Is there a way to make it so it doesn’t lose its shape ?

how do you weave in the ends on your 1st cast on in this video? with the double strand and tiny end?

The fabric looks neater when we weave in each strand separately, especially if the project is made out of thicker yarn. Happy knitting :-)

Are these only for 1x1 ribbing? Would they work for 3x3 ribbing?

That's a great question, Divya! Yes, any of these cast ons will work with any stitch pattern - any kind of ribbing and even stockinette, garter or other "non-stretchy" stitches. Happy knitting :-)

I liked “way #3” and would like to use it for both edges on a cowl. How would you bind off this way to match the cast on?

That's a good question, Risa :-) I haven't experimented with a matching bind off yet, but it seems that "sewn bind off" should be a good match.

HI, in he video you knit up the swatch i 1x1 ribbing but how can i do cast-on #3 for 2x2 ribbing? is it exactly the same?or do i do 2 cast-ons the normal wat and 2 cast-ons the alternate way? if i understand correctly, the alternate way creates a purl cast-on, am i right? what about cast-ons #1 and #2? how can i convert them into 2x2 ribbing? thanjks

The cast on method will be the same. You simply start to work in 2x2 ribbing in the first row or round. The edge will still be stretchy. Happy knitting :-)

Which one would be good for top down socks?

Any of these cast on techniques can be used in top-down socks. Simply choose the look of the edge you like and use the cast on that forms that type of edge. Happy knitting :-)

I am intrigued by #1 but am stuck. When I casted on my stitches I am left with the loop end and can't figure out what to do about it. Help!

What happens when you run out of the doubled yarn and you only have the working yarn left? I can't seem to get another stitch on the needle.

Well, that's a very unpleasant situation because it means that you have to unravel all stitches, measure a bigger yarn tail and start from scratch. Sorry, but I haven't come across any easy fix for this :-(

Hi Rosie. Try to use the variation of the long-tail cast on explained in this tutorial - www.10rowsaday.com/russian-knitting-caston Because it is worked with two needles held together, the stitches in the first row are not tight and it is easier to work them.
