55-year old, exceedingly straight, married, former football playing (the US version), retired American naval officer, and I first saw this film back in the mid-90s on, of all things, a US Navy warship. It was one of the first with women in the crew and the ladies got to pick the video being shown that night. I was blown away. It has everything; class warfare, hot chicks, Python-esque arguments, abuse & silly walks, & people speaking a foreign language - Australian! Brilliant!

Watched the movie again last night. Still one of my all time favorites. I hope they never do a remake of it

Am I the only American that enjoyed this movie? It is a childhood favorite of mine.

I remember watching this in English at secondary school . We had to compare this movie opening to Muriels wedding. Now they are two movies I really love.

A classic from the beginning! At the time I watched it, I thought they were being overly dramatic with the costumes and the drama. Not necessarily, but the drama and hilarity and their own special version of "dirty dancing" was brilliantly executed. While everyone (myself included) were wowed by Tina Sparkle, my heart belongs to Fran.

One of the most brilliant films ever made! Loved the camera work and dialogue defiantly worth watching for anyone that hasn't!! Baz's first film was amazing!!

What do I want? I'll tell you what I want! I want Ken Railings to walk in here right now and say 'Pam Short's broken both her legs and I wanna dance with you!!!" That's magic right there.

I rented this on video years ago out of curiosity and loved it. I have it on DVD. I think I'll watch it tonight.

@thespecter2 in an interview BAZ L said that Strictly B was one part of a trilogy. Romeo & Juliet and Mulon Rouge where the others. The trilogy was an homage to 3 aspects of the performing arts SB was dance, MR was music & R&J was the spoken word/literature. in all three he uses 'pop' music and all 3 are full of 'iconic' images of 'pop culture' like coke signs or the 7-up commercial visuals in the 'Absenthe' scene in MR. so there was a pupose to the coke sign.

This is one of my all time favorite movies.

I don't love all Baz movies, but this one is such a great fit to his cinematic style. It's always a fun watch!

To the neg heads - you have to be Australian, have a good sense of humour or be intelligent to really appreciate Strictly Ballroom. One of my favourite lines ever comes from this film ... "a live lived in fear is a life half lived" Negative comments and being little internet cowards would be a life barely lived.

I will forever be obsessed with this movie.

Sheer genius, still the best film Baz has made. Good to hear he's adapting it to a musical.

I love how 90’s Aussie films painted us as chainsmoking, leather-faced yokel versions of The Addams Family. It was in every Aussie film! Hilarious!

Saw this movie a few years ago. Wasn't expecting much, but actually enjoyed it. It's funny. Well done.

Every time I watch this movie (and it's been several), I can feel my emotions being manipulated and I feel powerless against it. It's fun to just go along for ride.

I LOVE this film. Baz Luhrmann is a genious, all his movies are fantastic!!! I always stay with the doubt as how he would have done his version of the life of Alexander the Great, and the musical Wicked.

So like Psycho, SB is not 'really' about the "glittering world' Ballroom dance...ITS FRANS MOVIE! She is ridiculed, knocked around, used & abused and emerges like the Ugly Duckling into a SWAN!
