About Nydal
In this series I will attempt to create a European-inspired city, not based on any one country or style but featuring a strong mass transit network and realistic looking road layout with a strong attention to detail.

The downtown looks really nice. However, lots of European downtown areas have underground parking garages, so maybe you could implement some of those instead.

Nydal is yours. I like the downtown work you did, despite the criticism. I agree with you that there are not enough moderately sized commercial buildings. It can be really hard to find stuff in the Workshop, as the tags are not often used well, the thumbnails lack scale referents, and there are a lot of very cartoonish buildings that have been uploaded. I also concur with many streamers who have mentioned that if you create actual new buildings, please leave the props off. Leave that to city builders to detail. I enjoy the three hour livestreams. I watch them over several days. Thanks for another great Nydal installment!

The edge of the downtown where there is a steep cliff (with wooden fences) near the re-decorated church looks more ideal for a cobbled viewing platform. Immagine lunch people sitting or staring towards the old town.

Should be more old churches in an old European city. Have you ever been in the city of London? Big banks and businesses in modern buildings with small medieval churches peppered around

The 'downtown' is quite nice, but if I were shouldn't call it downtown. In European city's the old part is 95% the center. The part with the new buildings is often a place where nobody comes, exept for people who need to be there.

In the UK we call them gas holders. There’s a few they’ve turned into buildings around the Granary Square area of London by King’s Cross St Pancras. They look fantastic especially the small park they’ve made out of one of them.

I imagine that the area you are working on used to be an old industrial area, then it was mostly torn up except for the gas tank and the main avenue, then new roads and modern office buildings were put in at the same time, explaining why the roads conform to the buildings.

European "downtowns" (downtown is a very American phrase, "city centre" is what it's called in Europe generally) tend to be renovated old buildings, not modern skyscrapers unless it's a large city, and the old centre tends to be larger than the new centre as the new centre is, well, new so not as much time to grow and is often offset from the centre slightly, but still very nice work!

Also yeah, usually most office buildings don't have any logo on them besides their own. They do want to keep a clean aesthetic and promote themselves and not others. The only exception I can think of is Times Square in NYC, but thats a huge commercial hub.

I guess most important for european cities is the lack of grid. if u look at google maps for any american city its just like looking at a fly screen. Here (probably) all cities are historically developed so you can see the history of how the city was in its road layout. For example Frankfurt: If you zoom in on Innenstadt you can follow the streets "Neue Mainzer Straße", "Hochstraße", "Bleichstraße", "Seilerstraße" and "Lange Straße". If you're following those streets in this order, you have Parks on your left-hand side that have kind of in a triangular shaped edges towards the outer districts of the city. Thats where they used to have their walls as this shape is very effective for defense, you can see it in different fortresses too.

IDk if you read youtube comments, but maybe try adding a "fancy cell tower" to the top of a mountain near the city kind of like the one in Seoul, South Korea, or the BT tower in London. Something to stick out and be a defining feature of the city high above everything else where the cims can go on vacation to. It is something I end up doing in like all of my cities because I think it looks cool lol.

Lovely design with inspiring attention to detail! Your comments regarding scale issues in CS generally are spot on. I suppose the CS developers fully knew they were fudging the scale in these original primitive vanilla assets, but then the game evolved so much with the contribution of modders and assets builders, leaving their original decisions looking silly. The airports and shipping ports (including buildings, vehicles and mechanics) are good examples of this - they often look like childish caricatures up against the realism of detailed city builds. I also get very frustrated tying to select commercial/office/high density residential buildings etc based on deceptive thumbnails and descriptions. Also the assets selection on offer is biased towards really massive cities (central zones of very big US cities, etc). You basically have to put it down to know what it is. It would be great to sort/categorize by height.

I like the inclusion of some modern buildings but the "downtown" is just overkill. For a small European city there would be maybe 1-2 modern buildings MAX in the entire city, and none of them would be particularly tall. As multiple people (myself included) commented in the last video, there is no way a small European town would allow tall glass office buildings next to what appears to be a centuries-old church. For one they're taller than the church (quite obviously so) and they obstruct the view of its steeple... which is a big no-no. I can't find an example of a smaller European city that has allowed large glass towers to be built next to important landmarks, with or without a buffer zone (if someone else does please let me know). But even in the biggest cities, like Paris, there are no tall buildings anywhere near important religious or historical landmarks in the city center. There's only a single tall office tower on the periphery of inner Paris---all the tall buildings get pushed out further towards the suburbs. In some German cities it works slightly differently, like Alexanderplatz in Berlin, but Berlin is a city at least 220 times larger than yours... meaning I highly doubt the local authorities would ever consent to large office towers being built next to a church. I'm not sure what happened here really. In your livestream I saw you demolish the tall glass buildings seemingly because you understood what I and others were talking about because of how unrealistic it looks. It's pretty disappointing to see you apparently disregard your own acknowledgement and move back in a direction people repeatedly told you was not European. The city looks very American now because of how it seems to spurn these historical traditions favored all over continental Europe. I'm not a fan of the direction you keep taking things. It also has above ground parking garages which again do not exist in city centers. They're typically underground and there is usually a lot of extra street parking because there simply isn't space to put them anywhere else. Also the trams you're using in your city are built in Canada for Canadian cities---they're not European. The Cimex delivery trucks I keep seeing around the city are also American.

Well said, i live in a city with 120k population in Croatia, Osijek, we have 3 office buildings that are higher than 50m, highest is 65m (not counting the cathedral 120yrs old its 95m), they are spread out in the city more to newer built areas not where is old squares, cathedral or churches, parking garages are underground, mostly near shopping centres, others are on ground, it seems to be more American style in this video, just does not fit in, here where i live there is an old square where cathedral is, main buildings and historical sights are there, shops, hotels etc... Public transport is only buses and trams, on a river bank there is an old fortress where all night life pubs are and more historical sights, and 15km sidewalk and parks along both sides of a river.

There are plenty of European cities with some very modern and tall districts. I live in one. Check out Tallinn.. our amazing medieval old town and highrise downtown are basically next to eachother. Though yes, these districts are still positioned in a way to allow old buildings be very visible in a skyline from sea. I don't complain though.. Nydal isn't exactly supposed to be copy or even inspired from a certain city.. so, it is basically a fantasy city.
@AlexDahl
@AlexDahl 5 жыл бұрын
I mean I suppose you're correct but this is supposed to be a "european city" build but it's not very european to have giant glass office towers adjacent to a church. I'm not against modern buildings being put in the city (far from it) I just don't like that he put them right next to what is obviously meant to be an important historical landmark for this small coastal city. Plus they just look super out of place for a city this small. Tallinn is the capital of Estonia and is a significantly larger city than Nydal is... so there's no reason to think that these sorts of buildings make any sense.

Buildings are too high and downtown is too big (*in my opinion*) for a city this big, I live in a larger city than Nydal, it has about 120k population, its name is Osijek, we have 3 buildings higher than 50m, the tallest one is just 65m, we dont have like a downtown, these buildings are spread out (i am not counting the suburbs with communist buildings around 30-40m).

thats because communism, the eastern countries didn't develop as fast as the western ones

@@equaius893 you are right, but downtown seems like it does not belong here, i dont know is it because im not used to seeing this kind of downtown, here where i live, it was not "hardcore" communism like in USSR, Yugoslavia was a mix of capitalism and socialism, it was not part of Warsaw pact or USSR, we dont have like these ugly Soviet suburbs, ours are more modern, more unique and every building was different that the other one, only one small bit (about 4 buildings) of suburb is for the poorest ones, they are cheap and ugly, they are for homeless and for poorest families.

I usually show first person views of the city at the end of my livestreams, I can't show that in a regular episode as it'd bee too laggy.
