After looking at a lot of Japanese denim brands on my channel, I thought it was time to bring things stateside with a look at one of the most notable names in American selvedge, or "selvage" as they spell it: Brave Star. Based in Los Angeles and made with 100 percent American buttons, leather, and thread... just not the denim itself... Brave Star is keeping American denim alive, to the relief of many US selvedge fans.

Great review! I just got a pair of N&F Elephant 9 21oz slubby for winter jeans. Definitely not as bad as I thought it would be or some people made them out to be. I find them plenty comfortable after a week of constant wear. I was cross-shopping these brave hearts but with with the slubby N&F for more potential character. We’ll see how they go!

Great video review! Brave Star offers exceptional value but common complaints include relatively lax quality control (stitching, fabric flaws, etc.) and inconsistent sizing.

I know this is late for a 2 year old video but I was curious if anyone online had done a review and this popped up. I just ordered the sequoia 21oz from Brave Star and been wearing them for over a day and they are amazing. Slim Straight for me in a 31 and the fabric and fit is great, I was a bit worried it would be too baggy in the hips but they are amazing and I love the colour too. Brave Star makes amazing belts and I love their thick hoodies and shirts, they seem to get better and better!

Great review as always. Got the 21.5 oz 32"True Straight a month ago. Have worn every day since. Have the same experience as you, Really enjoying the breaking in process. Perfect fit for me. Not a skinny jean kinda guy, but think Steve McQueen would be all over these American Made Brave Stars. Couldn't ask for more in quality and fit, especially at this price point. Think I'll go with the Suma 25 oz next time. Really enjoy the braking in journey.

Oh yes! I’ve been waiting on a Bravestar review, I was recommended them about 2ish more on 3 years ago. And was skeptical about the price, considering everything else was at least fifty to a hundred dollars more! I was really wanting to get some selvage and raw denim but not knowing much at the time I couldn’t justify the hundreds I’d have to pay for Japanese denim, let alone denim made in the USA. Which is what I really wanted, but I took the jump and have accumulated 3 pairs of bravestars over the years, a 14oz a 19oz and my favorite the 27oz sumos! So for anyone wanting to get into the raw denim world or just wants a pair of American style denim that they can rough up without worry I couldn’t recommend a better brand!

Hey Nick. I wear mostly Japanese made jeans but my Brave Stars are in my regular rotation. They’re fantastic jeans. I love mine especially because they’re made from Kuroki Mills 18.5oz heavyweight denim. Amazing fabric. I totally agree with you about their fits. I also like high rise jeans with 5 button flies but mine are still very comfortable and wearable. They look great, too. Minor gripe; I’m not crazy about the pocket star or the selvage edge on the watch pocket. Too gimmicky IMO. Great job with the review. I’ve always been curious about these 21.5oz jeans from them. You might next try some Left Field denim right there in NYC. They’re also excellent quality American made jeans. Thanks again and I appreciate your thoughtful effort on these great reviews.

Haha I was wondering if I'd find someone who doesn't like the star. I think it's cool! Especially for such otherwise simple jeans, but I get it. A bit flashy, perhaps. You're the second guy to recommend Left Field Duke, they don't have a good variety of fits either but maybe it's worth trying!

@@Stridewise I don't hate the star but I think I'd prefer a darker stitching. Something slightly more subtle. It's a minor minor thing. The watch pocket selvage is slightly more gimmicky but I'm able to ignore it. The jeans are great quality especially at the price. Yeah check out the Left Field NYC brand. I think you want the Atlas fit. They source very good denim from from mills like Collect, Nihon Menpu, Candiani, Cone, and Vidalia. Great review! I'd say irrespective of denim weight, ANY selvedge jeans you can manage to find on Brave Star's site that are made from Cone Mill's White Oak denim, the price is just too good to pass up. It won't be too much longer before the supply of U.S. made selvedge denim dries up and prices will sky rocket. I have a pair of 14 oz jeans I bought from Mik over 5 years ago and they're still holding together with zero blowouts. They cost around US$75 at the time, and if you think about it, that's lasted well over 5 pairs of non-selvedge jeans. Their price is unbelievable and the quality is among the best.

He's able to cut out the corporate fat and all the excess financial waste associated with it by keeping his manufacturing processes streamlined. He also values quality over price and has been able to still profit by the sheer volume of people who order from him. It speaks volumes to customers, which in turn gets the word out. It's a great financial model! Just wish more companies were like that.

Also have a 21.5oz Japanese double black slim straight and the 15oz Cone Americana Ironsides jacket. All of them are beautiful. Great review couldn't agree more! I bought a pair of these and they are great but the fits are not, I've got some big legs and rear and it's impossible to find selvedge jeans that fit. So far the only luck I've had is naked and famous easy guy, but as they say... Thems the breaks lol

For the price Brave Star is amazing, it’s not going to have all the little touches of Japanese brands, but they still make a great pair. As to the weight, I’ve never understood why people are scared of trying heavyweight denim, to this day my 25oz Iron Hearts are the most comfortable pair I own, it’s better than sweatpants.

25oz is wild! I'd love to try a pair like that Alex, but it must have taken months to get comfy, right?

@@Stridewise Its probably been 4 years or so since I got them from what I remember it took quite a few months to really start to break in. After a wash it probably took a week or so to stretch out again. I had them on almost daily for about 2 years before I retired them. It was a great project pair. Not nearly as bad of a break in as a pair of Nick’s boots, but in the end even more comfortable which is saying something.

I'd love to give them a try since those are great prices, but I'm like you in the fit department but even moreso with the junk in the trunk and thighs. I need a higher rise and more relaxed top block or it's a no-go. Sadly the other cheap US denim option (Gustin) suffers from this same exact problem with their fits - even their regular straight fit is like a mid-low rise that's pretty tight up top.
@Stridewise
@Stridewise 3 жыл бұрын
Haha I cut an extra full minute of me complaining about the fit, I thought it was overkill. They still look good on me I just can't bend over in them. And YES on Gustin! Everyone keeps telling me to try them but like, I can't with this ass.
@_bats_
@_bats_ 3 жыл бұрын
@@Stridewise They're also pretty inconsistent. I got two pairs in the same fit and same tag size, and one I would describe as on the lower end of mid rise but with just enough room after stretching out to be wearable. The other pair feels a full size smaller in the top block and is definitely crack-exhibiting low rise. I still think you'd get a lot out of Left Field's Atlas cut!

Hi Nick. New subscriber here . I've noticed on some of your other reviews on jeans that many of them show fading in the crotch area. I was wondering how some of these jeans have held up over time and if the denim in that area has thinned out and worn through. Would like to see another review of some of these jeans after you've had them awhile and see how they've held up. You've got a great channel here and I've been trying to catch up on your videos.

Hey thanks! Sadly i'll wear a pair of jeans for a month or two and then move onto a new pair for a new review so mine aren't SUPER worn, but yes the crotch is what wears through the fastest. I haven't gotten holes in them but that's usually wear jeans wear through first. I've heard of jeans with reinforced crotches but haven't found one that fits me yet!

Thanks for your comments Jason. I would add that all my comments were based on experiences prior to the arrival of cover-19. I note that on most jackets and shirts offered over the last 18 months the xxxl option does not appear on about half the new releases, so perhaps Brave Star have realised its better not to lead customers up the path with unfulfillable pre-manufactuer offers. I do hope they prosper as their products are very much to my liking.
