Yep, $700 jeans - OK, they're $660, but $700 sounds better - why would anyone pay that much for denim? You might be surprised to learn that Tanuki's "aizome" jeans sell out lightning fast, because there are scores of customers that revere the skill and materials required to produce this fabric, as well as the aesthetics of the fabric itself. In this video, a representative of Tanuki explains the "why" behind aizome.

I started off thinking there is no way they can be worth the price and then remembered that if you want something that isn't produced by slaves or children you have to pay a certain amount, then on top of that if you want the best materials you have to pay a bit more, add the unique techniques used and the amount of labour that goes into these jeans and I can understand how someone who loves denim would not mind paying that price.

Straight dope. Love how Japanese denim is a gateway drug to Japanese aesthetic theory, which we in the West need badly to learn to love the imperfections, flaws, and general finitude of life lived against that ever-looming background of a ticking clock of mortality. (When I was there, I remember seeing jeans being made on a handloom in the storefront; those were over a grand. Would've also liked to hear the details on the sizing... Still, great video. Im sorry dude, no disrespect to you as I know stuff like this gets views, but personally I find products like this disgusting. I can't even justify spending $700 on a smart phone, a tool that plays an incredibly powerful role in my life on a 24/7 basis. This is beyond excessive. My favorite jeans cost $15 new. In addition to feeling amazing, looking great, and doing everything I want and more. Second favorite, $11 second hand. I wear a pair of jeans 1-2 times a week depending on usage. The people who buy stuff like this exist on an entirely different plain of existence as far as im concerned.

I agree and disagree. I do understand craftsmanship and the price required. There are a lot of products like watches, shoes and cars where a cheap pair would work well but people are willing to pay more for craftsmanship. These are not for me, jeans that don’t get worn makes no sense, but I would give my wife’s kidney for a Ferrari which I probably wouldn’t drive. Each to their own.

I think there is room for some jeans to be just for show, like how some boots are showy and not something you'd take onto a jobsite. I kind of feel like clothing is at least meant to be worn, even if it's not something you can resign yourself to ripping or staining.

So much BS to call out here. Firstly, if the cotton was picked in the US, it isn't handpicked. Every bale of cotton in the US is picked by machine. Secondly, the sales rep talks about how the yarn is handspun. This is again BS as I guarantee no one is spinning yarn by hand in Japan. He also talks about also threads make up yarn, yarn and thread are the same exact thing, just two different names for the same thing so it sounds like he doesn't know what he's talking about.
