I have loved the Indys for 40 years, but have never owned a pair. Even with that obsession, when I plunked down my money, I bought the Vibergs. With the inferior materials, I just couldn't justify spending that much money on the Indys. The Viberg materials are simply topnotch. I hope the break-in isn't as painful as Nick experienced. I also own a pair of Vibeg steel toe work boots, which I bought 18 years ago. They took forever to break-in, but I don't think they ever hurt me. Those work boots are heirloom quality, I hope I come feel the same way about the Service boots. Btw, most Viberg boots can now be ordered in D, E and EE widths.

Rose Anvil reviewed the Alden Indy and, basically, ripped them a new one.
@TylerSnyder305

Of course we all know now that the last / shape is really the one redeeming thing about the Alden indy when the price is considered, every serious boot fan saw the indy cut apart recently on the Rose anvil channel and it's very hard to deny that the materials inside the boot just don't stach up against other boots in it's price range. You can get equal to better quality for the same or less. I personally can appreciate the look of a very nice classy boot, but at the end of the day they're basically just a high top dress shoe and as a blue collar guy living in a rural town I don't even own a suit and have no business wearing dressy looking boots.

I like speed hooks, but the hooks on the Indy are small and sharp. I prefer the Goodyear welt simply because you have more options for re-soles. Few people can do stitchdown, and even fewer correctly.

Thanks for the reviews Nick, I've found your style of doing these reviews to be very even handed. When you're critical of something, you're not overly critical, emphasizing it's not something "you" like. After watching many of your reviews, I have to say that I've picked up a pair of the Alden 403 from a local Philadelphia retailer, after taking your advice of trying them on first. One thing to point out is that I really like the combination last they're built upon, I really, really like that the heel feels secured in place versus other boots I have. They are a little heavy, much heavier than my Frye Logan Cap Toes, and there was literally no break in period. I find that the Neo-cork sole to have better grip than I had expected. If I get these resoled, I think I'd go back to Alden to get it done, I like the soles so far. Great thorough reviews!!

Chris, so sorry I missed your comment man. Thanks a million for the kind words, they mean a lot! I've grown to love my Aldens more and more, the combination last is really comfy and the company really knows foot shape. And yeah, the cork is surprisingly grippy! Again, thanks for watching.

I have both and love both for the same reasons. My Alden 405s are a little more casual, and mine didn’t wrinkle up like yours did and don’t have the gap like yours do. My Vibergs have speed lace hooks and other then that are identical to yours. But they are way dressier then my Aldens. Regardless of which I wear out I usually get someone asking what I’m wearing. It’s makes me think about how badly famous people have it. Getting stopped everywhere they go. My boots are famous LOL 😂

Love my Indy boots and agree fashionably they are more eye catching. I always get compliments when out with my boots on. Never heard of Viberg but they seem like a legit boot maker. Alden makes many more shoes I prefer like their long wing bluchers in cordovan cigar color, which I adore and sparingly wear.

Great assessment! Got a bit carried away and own 3 pairs of each. My favourites are the Viberg CXL (brown cap toe) and the Alden 405 (calf). Viberg’s CXL is thicker and resists the creasing that messes with my Alden 403’s & Kudus. Vibergs are ass kickers, whereas the 405’s are just plain cool. Can’t pick a favourite...like em both!

I own Indy and find it the easiest thing to pair with my clothes. Any type of jeans - slim (I guess super-slim might look a bit off), regular, rolled up, stacked, black, indigo, faded.... and all sorts of chinos too (especially olive ones look awesome) and any casual shirt or t-shirt and also leather jackets - both black and brown. Obviously, you wouldn't wear it with dress pants and dress shirts or blazers … but everything casual is a go.

I was hesitating between both of them and I found your review which helped me to make my choice. You can add one disadvantage for Viberg boots, it's almost impossible to find them in a shop in France. I went for Alden Indy 2 months ago and I have no regret at all. With them I feel really coooooool and proud walking in the streets. And so easy to break in, as you mentionned. In France only E width is available, but it fits perfect to my feet. Vibergs are out of my price range but hopefully one day I can get a pair. Wish they had a store in NY, would be convenient for trying on and buying. Great review and comparison between two excellent boots. I own both. The Indy gets slightly more wear time for me, I'm not sure why, but maybe because the leather is softer and it has a more molded feel against my foot. However, I do not like the speed hooks on the Indy boot. I find they are too close together and they often feel very fidgety when I'm tying them. I've had the Viberg for less time and they still feel like they're breaking in. Very stiff leather. A sturdy boot, for sure, but almost over engineered. Overall, I agree with your assessment. Thank you.
@Stridewise
@Stridewise 6 жыл бұрын
That's a great point about the speed hooks being close together on the Indy, Duke. Someone below said the Viberg felt "overbuilt" and I thought that was a good word for it. Just a bit too much boot. But it certainly feels indestructible!

I've worn Viberg Service Boots and the Alden Indy Boots. The Viberg's were very uncomfortable because on one of the boots they were kind of narrow. The Viberg's only come in one width which is disappointing for a boot that costs so much. The Aldens are comfortable from the moment I wore them. The only complaint with the Alden is the soles are not as tough as a Vibram or Dainite sole, but the boot construction and leather are awesome. They can all be resoled for something more durable like a Vibram sole or Dainite sole. The Aldens also look really cool when they age, and so do the Viberg's. The price on the Viberg is ridiculous.
@Stridewise

what is your brannock size? what width? 2030 is an E last, if you feet are wider, you might want to look at a different last, cuz 2030 apparently isnt suitable for you. Viberg should be around 600 imo, but the price hike is a bit too much. Still, I own 4 pairs, 2 shells, 1 RO, 1 Essex and the QC is excellent.

Viberg Boots are cool, but not really all that comfortable. In terms of durability, both are durable, but the Viberg outer sole will last longer than the Alden. Aldens are way more comfortable and much easier to resole. Comparing the two, I ultimately would go with the Alden because when the leather ages it looks awesome. Vibergs are awesome, but they are overpriced. Viberg's, even when broken in, feel like you are wearing a pair of logger boots. The Alden is more of an ortho boot, so it feels comfortable the first time you put them on.
@Stridewise

While a stitchdown welt isn’t as straightforward to resolve as a Goodyear welt, it does make a boot fully rebuildable. You can actually remove and replace the midsole, insole, and shank, which is something you definitely can’t do on a goodyear welted shoe

Excellent video Nick. The Viberg is just outside my ideal price point. In addition, I am a “D” width and a personal fan of the Goodyear welt. I’m also not keen on wearing boots that might feel as if my feet are in cement blocks, as I believe you mentioned, perhaps in responding to a viewers comment. Thus, based on your review and my personal assessment I would choose the Alden Indy over the Viberg. I do own a pair of Higgins Mill, Allen Edmonds boots which I am quite pleased with. I would be very interested in your thoughts of the Higgins Mill as compared to the Alden Indy boot. Perhaps a future video? I really enjoy your videos. I find your commentary very easy to follow, probably due to the structure to the content which you establish early on, in each video. Bottom line: Thanks very much and keep up the great work! Ed

Ed, thanks so much for your kind words! Glad you find things easy to follow. I think I'll definitely do an Allden Edmonds comparison with Alden, a lot of folks have asked for that I do really like the Higgins Mill shoes. It's tough with the Vibergs, it's not like they're uncomfortable they're just very heavy and when I'm walking in them it kind of feels like the shoes are walking *me*. That said, it does make walking in them feel very masculine and assertive, you know? Clomping around all powerful like. Some guys love it and maybe they're good to wear when you want an ego boost, haha.

This review is a little dated, especially what we learned from cobblers and the Rose Anvil review in the recent past. The Alden is not an adventure boot, it is a dress boot (???) made with inferior materials. Revive shoe repair (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bKqiqdd6lr7MaGg.html 2 minute mark) and Bedo leather craft (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pdqVq6qBqK_PpH0.html 1:30 minute mark) both expressed disappointment when they took apart the indy boot. FYI- when they were making the indy movies, they had like 20 boots available in various levels of wear and when some failed, they just swapped it out. What opened my eyes was when Weston from Rose Anvil cut open the boot and I saw all the inferior materials. It is a nice boot (but overpriced) and many like the fit but as for it being rugged, it is more of a hollywood created myth. Viberg is more of a rugged adventure boot, it can stand up to more punishment but I also think it is a bit overpriced but not as badly as the Alden boot.

There is merit to this observation. I am 9.5D Brannock. Got 9D Indy 403s, and I must wear thin wool socks. Even so, they are my hardest boots to put on with my slightly wide feet and high instep. While my feet are D, they are right up to the E line, I learned later from Red Wing's machine. Alden DC told me if I wanted to wear midweight wool socks, try 9E. Once on, my 9D boots are the most comfortable I own, but I'd like to try slightly wider, accepting that they'd be for midweight wool socks. I actually like the thin wool now; however, for a rough and ready pair of 405s I'd like to wear slightly thicker socks.

Hey, just wanted to see if you could help me with a quick sizing question. I’m a 9.5 EEE in White’s MPs. I don’t really have anyplace local to try the Alden Indys and the Vibergs on - so I’m just sort of guessing. Thinking I’d be a 9.5 EEE in Alden’s Truebalance last and 9.5E in Viberg (I’m used to wearing shoes that aren’t wide enough for me, so the fact that they’re only available in E width sucks but it’s something I can deal with). As a starting point, do those sound like good guesses? Or maybe go up half a size to 10 in Alden?

@@PumpUptheJam81 I don’t know what “cross shop” means. What I do know is that Thursday does not compare is QC or quality of materials. I have since owned a Thursday boot and was disappointed in the quality and returned it.

So I've been looking for some longterm boots and have narrowed down the brands to Viberg and Truman. Are there REALLY any concerns one should have with Viberg boots? I see lots of people talking them down and part of me suspects that it's just people rationalizing the price/reacting to the "elite" nature of the boot - a "I don't even want an OLED tv - LCD is better" sort of thing. Is QC that bad?
@Stridewise
@Stridewise 5 жыл бұрын
No, the QC on Viberg is phenomenal. It's the best thing about them. The leather especially, zero loose grain. Like I think there's a point of diminishing returns once a boot is over 400 bucks but that's just me. They're also super heavy. They're fine boots!

I really like the Alden tankers but their too expensive. Dont like shell either. I'll probably get a pair of John Lofgrens if I can find one on grailed or ebay to wear while waiting 18 months for White Klouds. Going to japan in 2 months. 😶

@jessijam5385
@jessijam5385 6 жыл бұрын
The quality is same at the line, both is very well made, but the outside looking is better with Viberg. But my opinion, i do not like the Stitch down construction of Viberg, not becoz of it's bad, i just don't understand why they do not make boots with Goodyear welt construction, if they do i can say their boots is the best. Maybe they want some kind of unique things but some brand like Truman use Stitch down construction too, so why they keep it. Many people said that Stitch-down construction can not resole many time like GYW, i was thinking about buying a pairs of Viberg Shell cordovan boots but with that crazy price i still dont have GYW so maybe i will give up that idea
@Stridewise
@Stridewise 6 жыл бұрын
I think it's worth asking yourself how many soles you're likely to go through in the boot's lifetime. If it's 2 or 3 it might still be worth it to get the stitchdown but I agree it's more of a no brainer when they have a GYW.

I actually have an Oak Street review going up next week! I only tried their Trench boot. A very very nice, simple boot with great leather, though I found the toes bump up against the end of the shoe a little when you're standing still. But worth trying out - if the fit is good I'd take it

Viberg's, you pay $695, but you also pay another $50 for international fees. Viberg's are imported from Canada, and you will pay an extra fee because they are shipped from Canada. Aldens have a ton of colors, and a variety of really cool boots styles.
