I see these boots compared to one another so much I thought I’d save us all some time and do my first three-way boot review: the Alden Indy vs. Allen Edmonds’ Higgins Mill vs. Grant Stone’s Diesel. I’ve worn all three of these for a long time - they are far from new shoes - so I’ve got a pretty good idea of how well they handle!’
FIRST GLANCE
-Alden
The Alden is the most unusual of the three and is easily distinguishable with its bright white moc toe and the chunky, tan colored Goodyear welt. It also has a soft heel and a neo-cork sole.
*SEE FULL ALDEN INDY REVIEW: • Alden Indy Boot Review...
-Allen Edmonds
Like the Indy this is made with Chromexcel leather but the aesthetic is a lot simpler. It’s almost like a service boot but it’s slimmer and easier to dress up. Also notable is the fancy Dainite sole, a good compromise between grip and flexibility
-Grant Stone
With duller, wrinklier leather, the Diesel is a little more outdoorsy but otherwise looks a lot like the Higgins Mill. It’s the cheapest of the three and the sole is made of what seems to be imitation Dainite.
LEATHER
-Alden & Allen Edmonds
These are both made with Chromexcel, a glorious and beloved combination tanned leather from Horween Leather Company in Chicago. This leather is known for its great depth of color. The downside is it’s a little easy to scratch away the top finish.
Alden had better leather selection; the Higgins Mill had quite a bit of loose grain on the shaft.
* SEE FULL ALLEN EDMONDS REVIEW: • Allen Edmonds Higgins ...
-Grant Stone
When I bought this boot it wasn’t available in Chromexcel, though it is now. The boot I got is Castagno Veg Tan, a vegetable tanned leather made with American cowhide that’s tanned in Italy. Compared to the other two boots it’s thicker, more hardy, it doesn’t scratch as easily, but it does age faster.
SOLE
-Alden
A flat neo-cork sole with a soft rubber heel, a lot of people complain that the heel wears down easily but it has great shock absorption. There’s also a cork midsole and leather insole, plus a steel shank for stability. Note that the Alden has the best arch support of the three, though the worst water resistance because of the big gap between the heel and the upper.
*ALDEN VS VIBERG - WHICH HIGH END BOOT IS BEST? • FIGHT! Viberg Vs. Alde...
-Allen Edmonds
A fancy Dainite sole that is a great combination of flexibility, durability, shock absorption, grip. Like the Alden it has a cork midsole and a leather insole, though this boot has a wooden shank and the arch support isn’t quite as great. It also has a storm welt, which is a little more water resistant than Alden’s regular 270-degree Goodyear welt.
-Diesel Boot
This has the heaviest and least flexible sole, though with its split reverse welt it may be the most resistant to the elements. The outsole is a rubber that seems pretty intent on competing with Dainite, then a leather midsole, cork midsole, leather insole, steel shank, and a heel seat. This has the best heel support and stability of the three.
* WATCH THE FULL GRANT STONE REVIEW - DOES MADE IN CHINA MATTER? • REVIEW: Grant Stone's ...
FIT & SIZING
-Alden
This has an unusual combination last, so the heel is a narrower width than the rest of the shoe. I’m normally a D width and this is labeled as having a B width heel, but it felt more like the toebox was roomy than the heel was tight. Available in all widths, fits true to size.
-Allen Edmonds
The best all-round fit for my foot, though your fit may, of course, be different. This is a great width and feels a lot like it’s cradling but not squeezing my foot, which is what you want to look for. Order a half size down from your sneakers.
-Grant Stone
The sole is pretty hard and there’s not much arch support, the boot is also the heaviest of the three. You might find that to be a pro or a con. Order a half size down from your sneakers.
PRICE
-Alden
$550-$580
-Allen Edmonds
$350 to $395
- Grant Stone
$360 - $390
VERDICT
Alden Indy
Pros
- Most distinctive
- Best arch support
- Every width available
Cons
- Most expensive
- Least versatile
- Least water resistant
Allen Edmonds Higgins Mill
Pros
- Best fit
- Most versatile
- Good compromise on sole flexibility and durability
Cons
- Worst quality control
- Loose grain in leather
- Not the most rugged
Grant Stone Diesel Boot
Pros
- The toughest leather
- Best heel support
- Cheapest
Cons
- Leather is dull and ages quickly
- Sole isn’t very flexible
- “Made in China” rankles some folks.

Recently rcv'd the AE Higgins Mill and I'm thoroughly satisfied. I wear a size 11 in Red Wing and Thorogood boots, but my measured size is 11.5. I ordered size 11.5 and the fit is literally perfect. Comfortable on day one and by day two I felt like I'd been wearing them for months. I'm a very casual (I call it lightly soiled) dresser and I expect that after some wear and tear that these boots will look more casual. Factory seconds and required bright lighting and very close inspection to discern any imperfections. Love these boots. Great review/comparison.

On a whim, I bought a pair of the Higgin's Mill when I was in an Allen Edmonds store. I loved the way they looked and felt from the start. A year later, I still feel good about my purchase and they still look great. The only downside is that after a year, they are slightly different in color, one is a bit darker, but it's not glaring and I chalk it up to giving it a bit of character because it scores so well on all other counts.

Hey man interesting video! I’m wondering if you could do a video identifying and explaining all the different types of welts for shoemaking? Both my feet were crushed a few years ago and so I’m trying to design and create my own shoes/boots and potentially turn it into a company down the road. Personally, I have tried the Grant Stone, but for some reason I always come back to Allen Edmonds. For some reason they fit me the best even when compared to other less prolific boot companies. Allen Edmonds have a loyal customer in me (I’m rocking their Normandies right now, and I have two more), but I’m terrified to try Alden’s now as I’m pretty sure I’ll change allegiance to them seeing the quality. Alden vs Allen Edmonds ! What a hard choice I love my iron rangers but I’m interested in something a little higher end . I like the Alden and the pseudo moc toe really catches my eye but it seems dishonest and Alden Indy’s prices is a bitter pill to swallow, the Allen Edmonds are more subtle and look better for my style probably and it’s $340 right now on sale and that’s a price I’m more comfortable, oh woa is me to be poor guess I’ll have to save up and get what I really want :l lmao I might just get some more iron rangers:P

Do a comparison of the Thursday Captain or President boots against the Allen Edmonds Sullivan boot. The AE is more expensive but close in price when you account for sales and factory seconds, and the styling/purpose are nearly identical. The AE Sullivan is a criminally overlooked boot (like the Higgins), but where the Higgins is a solid dressy heritage boot, the Sullivan is a shockingly sophisticated dress boot. It has a refined, shoe-like taper pairs nicely with a suit and elevates the traditional blazer and jeans outfit.

Never tried Grant Stone. But I do have a pair of Alden Indy’s. I did try to attempt to buy Higgins Mill but the quality control was a joke after 3 attempts. 3 strikes and you’re out. I always thought my Red Wings were very comfortable until I bought a pair of Alden Indy’s. My feet feel like butter in the Trubalance last. The arch support is definitely the difference too. In the Trubalance last my heel and balls of feet feel locked in with PLENTY of room in the toes. I’m pretty much sold out on the Trubalance last. However IMO Red Wing makes the best leathers out there. I’m not a huge fan of CXL. My next pair of Alden boots are going to be calfskin. I wish Alden would use leathers from SB Tanning but the leathers probably wouldn’t be a good fit with Alden’s.

The comment about the boot leaking around the gap in the near the heel - I disagree with that being a problem. Cowboy boots are much similar in construction and never leak there - your toes always get wet first. Even with a gap, that’s a pretty well sealed area, much farther away from moisture compared to the toe.

A sale on the Alden boot in a plain toe should put it in first place. The water resistancy was an odd thing to give or take points either way considering the quality control issues of the AE and place of manufacturer for the Grant Stone. Another point of modern shoe buying consideration is resale, of which the Alden imo definitely has the edge.
@Stridewise
@Stridewise 5 жыл бұрын
I wasn't necessarily saying water resistance is more or less important than loose grain, I was just noting pros and cons that different people might weigh differently depending on their tastes/lifestyle. Resale is a good point for the Alden!
@gaylongraham077
@gaylongraham077 5 жыл бұрын
Stridewise I might be bias, owning a pair of tobacco suede plain toe Aldens, but most buyers probably won't notice or know what loose grain is or actually test in a real way the water resistance of a good year or storm welt. I'd eventually like to get a pair of AE and GS to compare. If you could do a follow-up video if any major quality issues arise from either boot that would be great. Thanks for your time.
@Stridewise
@Stridewise 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for yours! I appreciate receiving such a thoughtful comment. In circles I run in on r/goodyearwelt people get *really* upset about loose grain even though it doesn't actually affect the leather's durability, but people want great looking leather for their boots. Others just want boots that function well, others buy boots solely so their socks don't get wet in winter. I try to offer enough information to benefit as many people as I can, but it can be tough haha.
@gaylongraham077
@gaylongraham077 5 жыл бұрын
Stridewise the loose grain I truly didn't notice as a quality thing until you pointed it out, thought it was just the normal texture of the leather. I have a pair of Timberland Boot Co. Blake Winter 8' boots and it has the loose grain in a few spots but it's definitely a rougher looking mock toe boot. They're in a deep wine almost cordovan color so it's less noticeable. Thanks for the info and keep up the videos. Have you heard of Vivobarefoot's Gobi or Tracker boots? That might be a nice change of pace to tryout and review. They are from a minimalist shoe company.

As for where to buy, it's almost impossible to find Alden boots at a discount, so it doesn't really matter where you buy them. The Shoe Mart is a very popular destination as they specialize in a lot of Alden make ups. For more unique Alden make ups, you could try specialty boutiques like the Brogue Shop.

The Grant Stone seems a bit better quality compared to Allen Edmunds, comparable to Alden but you get much better welts and a significantly lower price. While I think Grant Stone should be a little cheaper, their value do justify the cost.

Maybe some of their standard line boots could be, but I honestly think they punch far above their price point. You might look at Ashland Leather's You Tube video featuring Wyatt Gilmore (owner of Grant Stone) as he describes the evolution and more importantly where all the materials come from that ultimately are manufactured in China with U.S. Quality control. No argument that the pricing could be $50 less just from the impression China gives a product. No doubt some very good products are made in China while being sourced from top notch vendors.

Three weeks in and these are the most uncomfortable boots I have owned. I think it was a defect from the factory, the little heel insole was making it feel like there was a lump under my arch. Grant Stone with a real Dainite sole would cost more than the Allen Edmonds. So they saved a ton of money by using an imitation component. That's supposed to be value? If AE used an imitation Dainite sole they could sell their shoe for $350 MSRP, and sub $300 during sales, but they would NEVER hear the end of it from the critics. Double standards.

I've never been a fan of the Alden Indy. I can appreciate the history of them and the coolness of them being part of the Indiana Jones franchise and how that came about, but I don't like the fake moc toe. Do a proper moc toe or not, I do not like the in between. Call me biased, but I just cannot bring myself to appreciate things that are made in China. I understand that not everything that is made in China is shit, but the amount of shit out there is so high that it does give the good stuff a bad reputation. Also, I like and try to buy things that are made in America. I will always buy things that were made here if I can, and if I can't than I will look for things made in Europe, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, and other first world countries before I consider buying things made in China or other poor countries currently dominating the manufacturing game.
