In this video I share my care tips for the String of Hearts, also called, Chain of Hearts or Rosary Vine and its botanical name the Ceropegia Woodii.
I’m also going to propagate the String of Hearts through cuttings and water. When the roots have grown, I will plan mail him to a few of my IG followers to share the love.
The String of Hearts is one of the most popular and trendy houseplants today. Really easy to care for and even easier to propagate. Enjoy

Another great way to propagate them is by the tubers. You just lay them on some soil and they will grow a complete new plant. My string of hearts had 5-6 tubers on only one string, so I cut the whole thing off and placed it in a circular shape into a new pot, if that makes sense.
@CrazyPlantGuy

farins explodiertefreundin Yes makes sense. I will try that next time. Right now my SOH doesn’t have much tubers.
@possumfriend2335

@alexza03 They grow little round parts along the string, hence the other common name, rosary vine, and those are the tubers they mean. You can cut above those and lay those on the soil. You can do the wrap of the string on the soil to get nodes to root too but keep the strand rooted and do that rather than cut it and wrap, if that makes sense. That's worked better on mine.

Great tips! I found it helpful to know you should allow quite a bit of root growth before planting . Last winter I couldn’t find this plant anywhere even online so I ordered seeds. I was doubtful but they did grow and I now have a plant with approximately 16-18 inch strings. I’m going to propagate a few soon to bulk it up a bit. Thanks!

Hello and thank you for this video !! I bought cuttings of string of hearts. When I received them it came with instructions to dip cutting in rooting hormone and place into cactus soil with a bit of perlite mixed in. So being a newbie to string of hearts that's what I did. Then it said to gently water and place in bright indirect sunlight. 3 weeks later I got caught in one of the strings, ok my long hair did ! To my surprise it had tugged the string up a bit .... and there were roots !!!!! Love your video's!!

@@carolmeyer5505 In growing season {spring summer} water then sparsely...They really don't like being over -watered. Let them dry out between waterings. In Autumn/Winter they go dormant, so only water when they look like they need it {soil very dry and their leaves feel less 'full'.} I'm sure Crazy Plant guy will be along soon...but don't panic..the white bulb is quite normal...Ive owned my 3 for only 18 months, but they all have the bulb showing. Over watering kills more succulent type plant than under watering. 🌱
@michellereed479

I prefer to use sphagnum moss for propagating soh. I find that each cutting forms it's own little bulb & roots, therefore the cuttings have a much higher success rate. Often you will have to leave some moss on the roots when transferring to soil because the roots cling to the moss.

@@kaigonzalez-cruz2672 ..Look at your string of hearts... and you will see little 'Nodes' where leaves come out...Snip the leaves off...{look online to see} Loop the long string up and put the node{with snipped off leaves missing} slightly under the compost It will form roots...you can after a few months snip the loop to make two separate strings. NOW {Autumn in Northern hemisphere} isn't a good time to do it as the plant goes dormant, but if you are in the Southern Hemisphere...go ahead {lengthening days} There are instructions online for 'Layering' these plants. I find it quite compulsive growing new strings from an existing plant ..Good luck!

Hi, you have more choices than just water. There are about four ways they can be propagated. Butterfly’s on soil top. A string on soil top. Water and the bark type nodes that can get quite large too can be cut apart and left to herded and then those will spark new growth also its the hardest way but it works too. Beautiful father/mother whatever you’d choose! Lol

You can also propagate the leaves. I have successfully propped 10/15 leaves now so when you cut them off it’s worth a try. I find it s great solution to give the top side a bit more thickness. However instead of cutting, carefull pull the leaf (with the small stem attachted to the node) and make sure the stem comes off. You need that stem.

Magnificent plant behind you! My String of Hearts plant fell off his bracket and snapped half the length.....I need to propogate his broken bits! When it happened {4 days ago} O put the broken parts in compost, but will now do them properly in water....{they haven't wilted yet as I covered it with plastic bag} Ooh, I did it very wrong...I have about 50cm lengths in compost...Will salvage these today. Edit: Just taken about 10 cuttings and put them in glass bottles of tap water.

Yes they can easily propagate and make new plants out of them. Glad to read you saved some cuttings

Hi Christian! Happy Labor Day Weekend! I use the same mix for my potting soil. Works great! We have the same scissors too. LOL! Where did you buy the vases you used at your "propagation station"? They are really cool looking. I have never seen String of Hearts locally. If I ever do, I will buy one and propagate it. Looks preatty easy. Enjoy! Gerry 😎

Question! If I only propagate one strand and put in soil, will any more strands pop out or will that one strand just get longer and longer?

If you lay it down and pin the nodes to the soil you will get new strings from there

@@calamitynatalie8590 I have tried ''Layering'' but not yet had new strings...but they are independent strings now, cut from their 'parent' once rooted.

Do you think it will thrive in a north facing window? I got this as a gift and loooooove it! I’m curious if you have any tips such as growing light of the north direction is not enough. Thank you! Big fan of your channel!!!!

i didn’t realize it was so easy! I just watched a video on propagating string of pearls where the girl planted them straight away after trimming. Could that work for hearts also or do they need to grow roots in water?

Thank you, I will try the water propagation today. The butterfly method aint treating me well for some reason, even tho I did everything as recommended, (the new growths started to rot from the top even with decent roots in spaghnum and potting them sooner to save them only made them freeze in development). so this will prolly be safer and simpler and quicker in the end...with the speed of growth of the motherplant I dont really need to use the butterfly method I guess...

do you have any tips on how to make the plant look fuller and more lush? do you replant propagations back into the original pot or place the tubers into the dirt at all? mine's only a 4" pot with around 10 strands and looks pretty scraggly but it's grown to be over a foot long since i bought it in july!

My plant is balding so I want to replenish the top. My strings have many white balls on them.... should I use those to propagate? Are they tubers?

Thank you for making the video. It would be nice to see how they do when they reach to the point of being able to be transplanted to the soil. And also, When is the good time to propagate them? Right now it's early autumn here, My String of hearts is growing like crazy, I know I need to propagate it. But if i propagate it in water and wait for two months, then when I transplant it to the soil it would be in the winter, how likely would it thrive? What would you recommend?

My string of hearts plant is crazy and I need help. So I bought it 2 weeks ago and it grows incredible fast. I never experienced any plant to grow this fast. So far so good but the problem is: the strings do not grow downwards but to the sides. Futhermore I have 1 string that has 2 more strings on it. So there are no single strings but multiple growing from one particular string. It is hard to explain but I hope that you get what I mean. I am very thankful for its growth but I hate how it looks .. it starts to look like a rhipsalis plant but with hearts on it.. I like rhipsalis but I would love to look my string of hearts like it is supposed to look.

It sounds like your plant has rooted itself and there is no "end" to the string. I've seen this and you can usually tell which end was meant to be hanging, snip it and it will hang again and shoot off a new string.
