Strong Boundaries in Leadership will Irritate Others... and that's a Good Thing

Setting clear boundaries ensures respect for your space and autonomy. Boundaries can be seen as invisible lines defining your personal and professional space. They can refer to time, energy, emotional involvement, responsibilities, and even relationships. This not only protects your well-being, but also enables you to be more productive and efficient in your responsibilities.
The statement, "If your boundaries don't annoy others, they are probably not really effective boundaries," suggests that true boundaries will often cause discomfort for others. This could be because these boundaries may disrupt their expectations or habitual behaviours. For example, if you set a boundary that you won't check work emails after 6 PM, this could annoy coworkers who are used to you being available round the clock. However, it's crucial to remember that boundary setting isn't about pleasing others but about safeguarding your own well-being and productivity.
Focus and Priorities
In leadership, focus refers to the ability to concentrate on key tasks or goals without getting distracted by less important matters. Priorities, on the other hand, refer to tasks or objectives ranked according to their importance or urgency. Leaders need to have a clear sense of what needs to be done first and devote their energy and resources accordingly. Without setting clear priorities, leaders can easily get overwhelmed and lose their focus, leading to less effective leadership.
In the context of boundaries, priorities can help you establish what tasks, responsibilities, or relationships should be given your time and energy. Once priorities are set, maintaining your focus on them can prevent overstepping your boundaries.
For instance, if your priority is to maintain a work-life balance, then a corresponding boundary could be not working on weekends. However, it requires focus and discipline to adhere to this boundary, especially when there are urgent tasks or pressures from the workplace.
In summary, having clear boundaries is essential for maintaining focus and setting priorities, especially in leadership roles. Boundaries might sometimes "annoy" others as they challenge the status quo, but they are vital for personal well-being and professional effectiveness. Maintaining these boundaries requires focus and adherence to set priorities. It is about leading yourself before leading others.

great common sense! you hit it on the head in that social media has trained people to expect instant responses from everyone. it used to be expected and understood that if you asked a busy and important person for something, that it would not be surprising if they didn't even respond, or that the answer was no.

Hi Conor. I thoroughly enjoyed your speech on the significance of setting boundaries. You did an excellent job highlighting the main points and conveying their importance in our lives. Your personal experiences and reflections added depth and authenticity to your message. I particularly appreciated how you emphasized that boundaries are not meant to please everyone but to ensure integrity and intentional living. The analogy of accomplished authors and their clear boundaries was a powerful illustration. Overall, your speech was inspiring and thought-provoking, encouraging listeners to reflect on their own priorities and establish boundaries that align with their vision and values. Well done!

Thank you Conor, Boundaries are a concept that the Greeks, Etruscans, and Romans obsessed over as far back as 2,800 years ago. For the Greeks it was the concept of Horoi Mortgage Stones which indebted one to the Alchemical Black Earth of Archons like Draco. Horoi Stones were later abolished by the Greek Archon Solon, circa 574BCE, freeing Greeks from debt to the Alchemical Black Earth. But unfortunately for Americans the Founders marked the New Roman Capitolium/Greek Temenos District with 40 Greek Horoi Mortgage Stones indebting Americans to the Alchemical Black Earth for eternity. The Etruscans utilized the Etruscan Discipline as spoken by Tages as he stood in the newly ploughed fields of Tarquinia. The Etruscan Discipline was later added to by Vegioa's Prophecy as detailed by Vecue to include not only all Liminal Thresholds, but all Walls, Barriers, and Social Boundaries. When the English took over New Amsterdam in 1664 from the Dutch the Stones Siege Wall was seen as sacred, leading to Wall Streets enduring power and influence. So yes Coner, I agree boundaries have been sacred, important, and powerful forces in the Western World, and will continue to be for at least a little while longer. Thank you Conor for your wisdom, and thoughtful, well considered words.

Feel very represented with that statement about "if your boundaries do not itch others, then you haven't reached far enough". It might be a cultural thing too. Inspiring as always, Conor.

Thank you Conor! Love the video, great advice as always. I’ve always lived by the rule ‘ what’s priority number one for me could be priority number 20 for the other and vice versa’ 💪🏽😉. Great to know this reflects the life of integrity as you said. By the way I am really enjoying and learning so much from your online course ! Thank you 🙏
