Building these dado cut fish tanks racks, in my opinion one of the strongest aquarium stands you can build, was nothing short of a journey in itself. Blood, sweat, and yes even tears were shed during the process. Learn from my mistakes and I have no doubt if I can build these aquarium racks than so can you!

Thanks for showing all your small errors too. It makes it a real DIY project like so many people experience IRL. A cheap wood chisel could be a nice addition to your tool kit for finishing those dado cuts instead of a Dremel.

Well done, old skool skillz not taught much anymore. You put in some love into that, you will enjoy them. FYI you can use this method for a 6 ft tank if you use a center brace or use 2x8 for the span without a center brace. You can counter sink those screw holes and might have been happy with that. just my 2 cents, going check out your fish on ur channel....again, nice job!

As a new woodworker myself, I started with only mechanics tools and nothing for woodworking. Building garage and shed shelving, small fish racks and yard stuff, I know exactly what you mean by slow progress, not wanting to use the saw again, happy accidents and the frustration of finding nice boards. I’ve improved a lot (and bought a lot of tools!) but I’m actually having fun now. I was building some shed shelving for my wife when I watched this video the first time. Need to start building some 40b stands soon because I’m being overrun by calico plecos! I use 5/8” bolts and 3/4” plywood shelving to avoid the 2x4 along the front; that gives me more space to reach into tanks. I also prefer paint - but then I love painting. Watching you crawl out at the end of day two was worth watching the whole video! Lol. Those stands did end up looking good, and more importantly; they’re functional! I should say, my first stand attempt, which was for a 180g, ended up as my wife’s compost bin. I learned a lot though. Wait... you enjoyed the sanding? What planet are you from? Ha!
@WildFishTanks
@WildFishTanks 3 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear the calicos are going!! It was a tough go there for a while and thought I was in over my head but I think I’m going to build two more stands and look to apply what I want learned from these as well as advice from all the helpful comments. I was jamming out to some good tunes while sanding, maybe that’s why haha

I used a cinder block stand for my 29 gallon and used 2 by 4's and 3/4 plywood, so the weight was around 8.3 x 29= 240.7lbs. It is Ideal because the Petco 29 gallon was 1/2 inch inside the play, all around. My 2/4 was flat with the ply on top, very thick.

Building my first stand I learned the value of a good cordless drill-driver. My suggestion is to get the combo kit that also includes an impact driver. An impact driver uses less bits and strips out fewer screws, even when you are using pilot holes.

@@WildFishTanks Not a member Ryan so I don’t know. When I came across the site a year ago I noticed that apart from an invitation to subscribe to their newsletter, there was none to become a member. They seem to be big on promoting an annual Immersed aquatic art show. Lot’s of societal news, no notices of monthly meetings, guest speakers etc. I just didn’t get the “vibe” that they were the the type of club that interests me. It’s a shame that central Florida has so many fish farms......not to mention the giant Segrest, yet do not have a real functioning fish club in Orlando, the most visited part of the state.

I always recommend, whether building a deck or what have you, build with 4x the strength you think you need. I've seen 2xs break with 200lbs on 6 center,, and some be fine with 400+. You can't be too careful with living creatures. Great video though. Fish are awesome animals to observe.

Hey man, not just you but all of these tank rack builds on youtube that use wood keep forgetting about lateral movement protection. You guys are focusing so much on downward weight distribution that you forget about horizontal support. For example if you were to bump into that rack with enough force, such as falling and catching yourself from the sides of the rack the combined weight of full tanks would cause it all to come crashing down, especially if any of your viewers live in earthquake zones like California, even a small one will break the structure. (Think of a pendulum) The screws would rip right out and through the wood. It is an easy fix though. Just get some half inch or 3/4 inch plywood and make some gusset triangles or just buy pre made metal ones and screw them in on the back side. Or double the number and add them to the front side as well if you are extra paranoid. The gussets protect your rack from lateral movement. This is important especially if one tank is heavier than the other tanks on an end. Google images shows what they look like. They are just triangles that join the various joints. Just some advice from a woodworker who is also into fish.

To anyone reading this #9 or #10 deck screws and wood glue are your friends. And a table saw and a chisel will make these dadoes a joke.

I built a stand and realised I made some measurement mistakes. Why do they call a 2"×4" a 2"×4" if it's actually 1.5"×3"? 🤔🤭

Lol! 1.5x3.5 As near as I have learned over the years, the lumber before it is milled to size is rough sawn to those proportions. The 1.5x3.5 is what is left after a 2x4 rough sawn. Having said that, I’ve also heard it’s a conspiracy going back a 100 years by the mills. If you’ve ever seen a 19th century house, they’ll talk about remodeling a home and having to use REAL 2x4s -they measure 2x4. And of course, there is the ease of reading and writing; 2x4 is much easier to say and write than 1.5x3.5.

Yeah, it could be a pain. You have to really use the piece of wood itself as a template
