Imagine waving bye to a group of robots and having them wave back as you lock the doors to leave. Do they even know what bye means or is it just another task?

It doesn't matter. All that matters is that they fill their role to the best extent. Social blending is an important part of the role in a supermarket, or robots will cause unease amongst customers/staff.

Robots are not going to be very practical until they are as fast, or faster, than human workers.

they dont need to be faster because they can work 24/7 and cost less per year to run as they dont need healthcare or taxes and dont get longterm sickness like humans
