Yes yes yes to all of this! I'm in college and my accommodations are so insanely helpful - especially for someone who wasn't diagnosed till she'd been in college for three years. I would also recommend talking to people in the disability office before you apply for your accommodations - they can tell you common accommodations they provide and possibly help you think of some you wouldn't have thought of or explain why they might be helpful. I also talked to my therapist to bounce ideas off of her for what might be helpful. I still often feel bad for having my accommodations because my brain tricks me into thinking I shouldn't need them, but Jessica is right - these are things that simply even out the playing field and give you an opportunity to succeed. Every professor I've ever given my accommodations letter to has been so kind and so supportive and constantly tells me to let them know if there's any additional thing they can do to make my struggles easier for me. You deserve to succeed.

I don't feel bad for wearing glasses, although I wish I didn't need 'em. There is absolutely no shame in getting accommodations. You can get to your full potential this way. :) I've been on both sides, I had accommodations and work with people who have accommodations. It's a huge game changer! :)

@@raph009 This is such a nice metaphor! I had the same problems with taking my medication. The stigma is high especially if you take retalin. My therapist told me I shouldn't think about my meds as something I need to take to have a chance or an advantage. I should think of them as the set of glasses I put on every morning. Only that it's not for my eyes but for my brain. Nobody is shaming anyone for having to wear glasses so why should we shame ourselves for needing meds or accommodation?

Chandler Smith Chandler Smith just wondering do you also have trouble learning anything Like after 20 minutes of hard thinking your mind gets real foggy and fuzzy and it’s like a barrier you can’t break it no matter what you try. It’s not even a real headache but it feels uncomfortable And after a while you just give up and read some novels or whatever you like ect

I’m always hesitant to ask for accommodations because: 1) idk what to get help for 2) I can’t tell if i need them or if I’m being lazy

If I had a dollar for everytime someone with ADHD said maybe they were just being lazy I'd be so rich. Truth is, ADHD is what Dr. Russell Barkley calls a "motivational deficit disorder." Gonna do a video on that later this month (and talk about what to do about it) but in the meantime please know if you're struggling to get stuff done, *there's a reason for it* and accommodations exist partly for that reason

@@nixthelapin9869 Hey, what are you studying? And how are the people in your study? Are you socially connected? Maybe it's an idea to get coffee with someone that you seem to be getting allong with. Just say you've had a bit of difficulty to keep up and/or adjust with college life and have fallen slightly behind. You don't have to tell them that it might be due to your adhd if you don't feel comfortable. Ask them how they've been handling it and ask if you can read/copy their notes. Put them through a scanner/printer, this way you won't be borrowing their notebook for a week. You then also are provided with a point where you can continue to take notes, and something to fall back on if you aren't able to write them over. You'd be suprised how many people are willing to help you out (I was, without my classmates I would have definitely failed). Here's also a fun thing, after secondary I bumped in to the right people, all are from different studies. They are now my best friends. In the friend group only one person isn't diagnosed with something. We're the group that can easily forgive each other, mainly because we all understand the struggles. We understand that when we eat together and the grocery list is a mix between sentences and bulletpoint list, that obviously one of the main ingredients will be forgotten. We also formed a study group that was reasonably effective. We learnt different coping mechanisms that where never suggested to us by a professional, we held each other accountable. You're not alone in your struggle. By talking to someone you break the isolation, and it decreases stress, anxiety etc etc. It'll prevent you from creating the wall of awful. Talking about it the first time, and getting help for the first time might be difficult, but it gets easier.

I was diagnosed in college. I took 6 years instead of the assigned 3 years to get my BA degree - after 4 years I got diagnosed and it made a WORLD of difference. I remember crying at the bus station on the way home from the clinic after receiving my diagnosis. I wasn't surprised and I wasn't necessarily sad... I just felt years of pressure on myself getting relieved from me with that diagnosis and treatment plan. Years of calling myself lazy and uncaring. Treatment helped AMAZINGLY. The university accommodated beautifully. I should have been diagnosed so much earlier.

With a lot of my accommodations I almost felt like I was cheating. I would get extra time, wouldn't use it, and then get a 103% on the exam. But I realized that part of the benefit for me is that the accommodation exists at all! Knowing that I had extra time to overthink, overanalyze, and quadruple check my work significantly reduced my anxiety levels. Plus, being in a quiet test taking room with a bunch of strangers (not classmates!) made me feel better about how fast/slow I worked through the exam. I was able to ace most of my classes because I'm smart and should be able to, not because I was cheating.

Accommodations saved me in college. On top of the usual annoyances that come with the ADHD package, I had horrible test anxiety, which made in-class essay writing a nightmare. Through the Office of Accommodations, I was able to get extended time taking exams, and I took them in a soundproof room to help me avoid distractions and alleviate some of the stress. I made the mistake of trying to go solo my first semester. Needless to say I crashed and would’ve burned if not for the accommodations office. Sadly, even with all the progress I was making with the accommodations, my GPA never got to where I would’ve been if I had been going to them from the start. So if you are considering, PLEASE do so.

Caveat. I went to art school too. And while for you it can make you creative you gotta remember to do the assignments. Sure sometimes my spontaneity helped my craft but it also meant poor planning and studio booking and rushing a lot. Rushing is how it piles up. Just because it's art doesn't mean you shouldn't treat it as requiring the same amount of scheduling/focusing/pre planning especially for ADHD brains

Hello everybody, as someone who wasn’t diagnosed until age 43, I can tell you my college years were a disaster, including flushing $5000 of tuition (1987 dollars) down a completely failed semester. Looking back, I’m sure I would’ve been too proud/ashamed to be labeled disabled EXCEPT for 3 accommodations that would’ve made a difference: 1) Priority registration will allow you to get into classes later in the day, especially “101/102” classes scheduled @ 8am. Priority registration can get you into classes later in the day (for night-owls), more frequent & shorter (to lighten homework so you don’t have A LOT due next class ... or maybe that’s better?), or to get lab right after science classes (so your brain is primed for discovery!). 2) Therapy & counseling provided by student health services. Prior patients coming back will probably have first-dibs on the counselor they like (often a more-experienced & successful professional), leaving new patients to see the unpopular counselors and/or some inexperienced grad student who hasn’t worked long with ADHD, or only knows the textbook cases. 3) Your college may even have tutors, teacher aides, or coaches to help students (especially those struggling), so it’s good to have your prof/dept know you need all the help you can get to remain interested & accountable. Remember colleges are in the business to make money & to do this by ... pushing as high a number of students to graduate, get students into senior & grad programs so good profs feel needed & stick around, and keep college fun & productive so alumni are more likely to donate ... so it’s in their best interest (much like an employer’s) to ensure you’re happy & productive. These 3 things would’ve helped me not fail MATH 201 @ 8am M-F. Good luck!🤓

College accommodations saved 👏🏻 my 👏🏻 life 👏🏻. I would've dropped out if I didn't have them. I didn't even know I had ADHD until my junior year of college. I kept smacking into an invisible brick wall and I kept trying to walk around it but the wall was infinite so... my college's ADA department sent me to counseling and to my old pediatrician and when I came back they had a metaphorical ladder to help me climb the metaphorical brick wall that I kept breaking my nose on. Ouch. But also: the view from the top of this wall is pretty great.🌞

Hmm. I appreciate this video. I’ve looked into disability services before since I’m ADHD (inattentive type) and bipolar 2, but those usually manifest in straight up forgetting to do assignments, or taking 6 painful hours to do something that should take 2 (and if I’m hypomanic, forget it, it’s not getting done regardless of how hard I try). So I feel like there isn’t really anything my professors can do to help me with that. I have to do the assignments when they’re due for my own and everyone else’s sanity. Plus I’ve yet to find the mental focus and drive to actually get all the paperwork together from my various doctors lol. Sounds like a lot of phone calls and attention required. 😫 But that being said, I’m finally on medicine that has my mood stabilized and just got a prescription for ADD medicine that is really helping me focus and have motivation to do things! So far I’m doing a million times better than I was a year ago when I was being treated for the wrong thing and had to medically withdraw. I’m even thinking about going to grad school which is something I didn’t think was possible a year ago!! Take your meds and see your doctor, kids! Wow that was rambling. Anyway, I’m not sure if it would be worth it to document my disability or not? Like, on one hand I want it to be on official record so my behavior is better understood, but at the same time I don’t want to allow myself to use it as an excuse to cut corners or have people treat me differently. Being aneurotypical in a world full of smarties is hard. 😪

@MelissaSamms 4 жыл бұрын
Just to add: most of the time, professors are happy to accommodate without getting accessibility services involved. It saves the Universty / College resources. I tended to go to services when professors wouldn't help right away - sometimes they just want verification, but also sometimes they're just jerks about it.

See, I've really struggled over the past few years and I'm taking an extra year in college (I'm in the UK). I did a dyslexic tendencies screening test to try and get extra time (I take A2 Chemistry and I take a looong while to process the information, and need to get 100% in all my exams this year to get the grade I need to get into uni), and it came back saying that I'm not entitled to extra time. I do get rest breaks and a prompter, but they're not really ideal for my situation. I've always excelled in English so I guess that's why my scores were so high, but chemistry is completely different for me as there are so many different concepts and contexts I need to grasp alongside everything else. :( Gonna keep pushing for it though! Thank you so much for making this content x

I lived in Scotland for five years, I got time and a half for ADHD. You don’t need to have dyslexia as well to get extra time on exams. You should get tested for dyscalculia as well though, which is a maths disability that has a high comorbidity with ADHD. If you have dyscalculia you should be entitled to a memory aid and calculator too. Also, get your working memory and processing speed tested. Psychologists and psychiatrists can do these tests. You should look up your legal rights under the equality act 2010 and UN convention of disability rights. Learn how to advocate for yourself, don’t let the school walk all over you because they will try.

Didn't have a clueeeee about my possible ADHD brain in college and had to change majors a few times because I was flunking classes (even though I had been in the top 10 of my high school class had aced AP, accelerated, and honors classes before) because I also didn't have a clueeee about organizing, prioritizing, killing perfectionism, and setting time limits or even what realistic time limits were. Then junior year a friend who knew the academic coach said I should go talk with her to get help. She taught me SOOOO many strategies to manage my time and tasks and just TURN THE STUFF IN. I graduated and passed all the rest of my classes and still use those tools she taught me all the time. If I had known about my whole issue, I probably would have been able to complete the degree I started with (but probably would never have met my husband... who also has ADHD..., so it all worked out great in the end). :)

I literally got accommodations for the first time ever! Was diagnosed at the psychological center at my school and used the documentation when I saw the accommodation person. Extra time for tests, papers; a LiveScribe pen and Notebook that records as I write notes; people who donate notes to me etc. I've been struggling to not feel ashamed of getting these. But it helps me just to be On PAR with everyone else. I'm honestly really happy about accommodations.

I used to use livescribe and have switched to notability on the iPad with the Apple Pencil. That way I only have to carry my iPad and Apple Pencil, and everything is backed up to the cloud. It’s been less expensive in the long run (one flat cost instead of buying ink and notebooks all the time) and livescribe has terrible customer support in comparison.

My community college will not offer "extra time" to complete assignments. It is simply for quizzes/tests only / "double time" - in a "reduced distraction" setting-as well as "shared notes" (carbonless carbon copy of someone else's class notes for each lecture. "Same size fits all" for other mental/neuro conditions, as well.

(sorry for the long comment, but your TEDTalk had me crying and this is the first time I've ever talked to anyone about it) I'm SO happy I've found you through TEDTalks (loved it btw)...while listening to you, I cried my eyes out, because I'm currently trying medications for the first time and I'm 43 years old! I finally had to figure out why I do the things I do in life and I get upset at myself later confused as to why I am who I am! And when you said about the dopamine searching...the many jobs (I had 9 jobs one of those years)...failed relationships...struggling in college...feeling like a failure...I cried because I felt like SOMEONE finally understood me instead of calling me lazy or dumb. When you talked about motivation to do homework, or feeling like your mind is changing channels 30 times and someone else holding the remote...I was like THANK YOU! My mom (I love her dearly) is mainly why I never got help before 43yo. When I was a kid, she always called me lazy and was always mad at me for having bad grades and not studying. She felt I wasn't smart enough and that was the result. She wouldn't take me to the doctor, or psychologist because she is a Pentecostal fundamentalist...which is fine, but the church told her that medicine is not the answer, and that psychiatrists would only turn me against her or be on my side, so she wouldn't take me...AND mainly believed that God could fix anything, and just to pray it away basically. Trust me...I PRAYED, but nothing changed. But after feeling like I failed at life, I finally was just so disgusted with my life...I had to figure out how to fix it and so I examined my behavior, researched online, and realized that this must be the issue. I also deal with manic depression and bipolar type 2, BUT I'm wondering if it's more of the results from having ADD. When I told my mom about this, she still didn't believe me and felt it was an excuse for me being lazy...so I told her to PLEASE call a doctor and just ask them what they think. The doctor asked her 1 thing..."How many jobs has he had?" And she said..."too many to count"...and the doctor said I need to be seen asap, if I wasn't already. So...I started back at college last August, but I wasn't on medication yet. My doctor put me on Ritalin 5mg to take twice a day at first...I didn't feel like anything changed, so she upped it to 10mg and it kind of helped, but I didn't know if I should keep going up until it feels right, or just be happy with what dose I'm at. It feels like it's like I got glasses for the first time, but not just the right power. We stayed at 10mg, and she put me on 10mg Extended-Release and I still basically failed college (failed 3 classes, passed 1)....I never wanted to study and waited till the last second to do homework or take tests, and I was angry with myself not understanding why I do that...Procrastination should be tattooed on my forehead! I wondered if I just never will be a good person at life. But I was reading online where if you were taking 10mg twice a day, then if you switch to Extended-Release, that the doctor should have you on 20mg ER. So, maybe I'm not on the right dose?? Just sad and frustrating. I got put on Academic Probation, which may be my lifesaver along with medication...I have 2 advisors now and a tutor...but one of the advisors said that I could get disability assistance for having ADD....so I applied for it. Basically, they will give me more time to do homework or tests and get extra help in studying skills etc. I'm also not sure if I should try a higher dose or what. But anyway, I just wanted to say THANK YOU for trying to help people...You ARE helping a lot, and that meant the world to this person right here. THANK YOU for being selfless and helping us, the lost, find the light. :o)

I was officially diagnosed my junior year at the university, and was given accommodations for tests and other help. But it all made sense, from elementary school I remember going to resource class while everyone stayed in the regular class, I would work on puzzles, draw, and do a few crafts. The resource teacher always played classical music which I later adopted into my life to help me rest my mind, Merrit roll, honor roll, high honor roll was easy to obtain, I’m fluent in 4 Languages but I still am trying to control my emotions. I have received many licenses in carpentry, irrigation, pesticide application, CDL class A, Hazmat endorsements all while working on my 5 years master’s in architecture, i didn’t realize my hyper focus was allowing me to absorb and retain so much information. However I forget a lot of things, I have a tough time waking up, all nighters are a common thing to me, and when someone talks to me my head is probably thinking about a crit in school, or a model that I just remembered I left unfinished, Peace ✌🏽 Oh by the way I’m new here, just subbed..

I'm so blessed to have my major at my college. I wasn't diagnosed with ADHD until my last semester in college after I was technically supposed to graduate. However, I kept communication with my professors and let them know I was struggling. They gave me an extension (an incomplete on my courses), so I had extra time to work on them. Then, my professor set up check-ins after school is technically over, to see how I'm doing. They are so supportive and encouraging. Now, I am understanding more about my brain, I can find out what to ask for and how they can help. This channel is really a blessing. As a gifted person, I have always felt shame for not getting stuff done. But now, I feel even more proud of what I've accomplished without any accommodations. With them, I can probably conquer the world! Or at least, finally graduate. 😅

YES! i want to scream it for the rooftops. Getting more time on exams and doing exams in separate has been a life-changer for me. The best accommodation i only discovered this semester - the ability to stop the exam at any time for a max of 30 minutes which is great for people like me who freak at the beginning of every exam or in the middle of the exam thinking I'll never have time to finish. In the past, have the PDF submitted in advance as well as the reading we going to do in class also helped immensely. My professors are always been helpful. My suggestion is to be 100% honest with your counsellor about your needs. They are here to help and find the best accommodations that work for you. Even if you think, there no solution, there always is. I really wish i had been diagnosed sooner, i would saved myself a lot of heartaches.

I managed to get through university despite almost failing the last year, and graduating a couple months later than most of my friends. I was recovering from depression and the last thing I wanted to do for the next 10 years was more studying. But a really really good opportunity came up and now I’m doing a post grad degree, love the major and love the job, and really, really, REALLY struggling. I am undiagnosed and waiting to get tested. I’ve talked to a few (mostly supportive) people but it doesn’t seem like they can really provide much help...I am getting extensions on most assignments (accomodation based on other things hay I do have documentation for) which has probably saved me from failing a few things already, but it doesn’t help with motivation or make the task any easier to start or to complete. And I’m finding that even the motivation from impeding deadlines is starting to lose power, almost completely, probably because with my new workload now I am just so exhausted. I’m at a large university (and a different country) and many of the accomodations mentioned in the video/comments don’t seem to be a thing. But in any case I am hoping a diagnosis and treatment plan would just help me, myself. And just maybe also help me get through this course with just a reduced amount of tears and stress and fear of getting back into depression...and everything else. In any case, I am going to keep struggling and working hard towards that degree, because (1) it took me so much self-encouragement and so much courage to sign up, after my traumatic experience in last year university and then a job that I both hated and was terrible at. (2) It’s possibly the first thing and the biggest “leap of faith” that I have ever taken and worked hard for, knowing exactly why I want it, and not because I’m being pushed into it by anybody else. (3) I’m unlikely to ever try for any other course of academic-y study ever again, regardless of whether I fail or manage to finish this one. But if. just if, I end up failing or dropping out, this time round, I think I will be able to move on without too much regret and beating up myself. The past months have been the hardest I have ever worked and most productive I have ever felt...for the first time in life, I think I will be able to say “I tried my very best and failed. It’s not my fault.”

Those who dont know much about Adhd dont see it as a disability, and because of that those of us with adhd dont want to feel special or stand out. But adhd presents an issue in learning, and in some cases that issue needs corrected. So if your struggling in college, please dont be afraid to ask for accommodations.

They offer free tutoring to anyone who is struggling, and they have a department for neurodivergent students so they can get accommodations. They also value relationships between teachers and students, so I will be able to ask questions 1 on 1 with my professors if I'm confused. This school is definitely high on my list!

ALSO ALSO ALSO IT IS POSSIBLE TO GET ACCOMMODATIONS IN GRADUATE SCHOOL! I'm in a PhD program at big research university right now, and I have accommodations! Mine include the ability to ask professors for deadline extensions without being penalized and record lectures (or parts of lecturers) if I feel myself spacing out. I didn't get diagnosed with ADHD until after I graduated with my bachelor's, so I didn't have accommodations back then, but after I made the decision to go back into academia, it was essential to me to get all the support I could. Grad school is not a career step that's natural or easy for my ADHD brain, but it would be that much harder without an institutional support system to fall back on. And what's more, I haven't actually *used* my accommodations yet. Just the mere fact of having them, though, and knowing that they're at my disposal if I need them, is a huge boost.

Glad you did this episode, I tell so many other people who are hard of hearing, anxiety or also have ADD that they have never heard about these accommodations! and as a student you have the right to use your resources! :)

My college is first on the list! I wish I had had a diagnosis and/ or used more of their services. I made it through but I could’ve done a lot better!

I'm an Aussie student with accommodations (for Bipolar). I go to a smaller, regional university. I've notice the schools and universities are moving towards calling disability services "inclusion/equity services". Process is much the same. Ours also offers a short-term plan while you get the medical documentation. The plan lasts for 3 years and if you are a part-timer like me you can review and renew it. When I first enrolled they had a program for students with ADHD and Autism that focused on a variety of skills that will improve success at uni. They do have a pretty extensive range of skills training here too.

I just got my accommodation like two weeks ago. I am going to a community college and I switched majors so I’m in third year. My first two years I when without accommodations mainly because I was too scared and I never found the time. Then I started making a personal challenge to go without accommodation, and to test my limits. But this year I got overwhelmed with homework and stress. The stress tore down all the limited time management skills I built up. I knew I had to get my accommodations. But it turned out I had also built up pride about not using accommodations. It took a lot out of me just admit that I need accommodations. And then I became aware of my growing fear that I misdiagnosed and that I wouldn’t be to get the accommodations and that by falsely calming that I have disabilities I would be expelled, or arrested, or killed. I really took a lot for me to walk in to the disabilities office and ask. Thankfully they understand my scrambled statement of words to try and ask about what to do, as what I meant. And they gave me an application and set an appointment the same week. I could not fill out the paperwork because of my fears, but I spoke to my calculus professor about what I could or should ask for to help me through his class, he could not speak for me about my disabilities but he was able calm my nerves enough for me to continue my application. The next day or so I went to my high school and requested my last ard’s transcript, they accepted the request immediately and the paperwork was just a formality, but my records were put in storage since it has been two school years since I graduated, they could not give me them that day; it only took a since then to turn in the documents after the appointment. So I was able to make it to the appointment with the blank paperwork, but it was okay they let fill out as much as could by myself; but then I realized I had class in like ten minutes so they rescheduled me for a Friday morning when I have no classes. I felt better about the second appointment since I knew I would be able to talk to them so I could write, (I just realized that I need to who I am writing to write, I can’t express my self to the faceless), and that I could say what I can’t bring myself to write about “me”. After the second appointment they immediately wrote the accommodations letters, and sent them after I signed. I am extremely grateful to them, but of course I can not being myself to tell them or thank them. It still hurts my pride use my accommodations, but I have too view as price I pay to have a “level” playing field. Thank you for making your channel, it has definitely helped me be mature about dealing with my disabilities; thank you so much. I also hate sharing about myself, and in all likelihood I will delete this post. And apparently honesty has always been one of my strong suits, and oversharing too. Thank you again.

Me before tertiary education, who never got accomodations: Hah, weaksauce Me, now just started college and already got referred to the counselor’s office: Oh. I mean, it’s not the system’s fault. I went to public schools who weren’t really equipped to deal with kids like me. But now I attend one of the top universities in my country and I am. Suffering.

It's my birthday today!! What a coincidence as I have lots of accommodations I need for my bipolar disorder and panic attacks, and although I had them last year I just had to reapply. Thanks for making such a great video, I'll be sure to use it when I go to college!

I love this video, and I feel compelled to share my story! As someone who has now graduated, I loved getting accommodations and wished I had done them sooner. I was able to get note takers for my classes, and I got extra time in a quiet room for tests, as well as priority signup. The note-taker and priority signups were nice perks, although having a note-taker helped me compare what I had noted in class so that I could improve upon my own note taking skills. The main benefit was the test taking room. Just before I applied for my accommodations, I noticed that I was struggling on my tests while succeeding on my homework, and it was because I was getting easily distracted and my brain wouldn't focus on the problem at hand. The room allowed me to really buckle down, and it showed. I was able to recover from my horrible GPA I had my first 2 years, and ended up finishing on the Dean's List my last 4 semesters. I hope all the ADHD brains sign up for this, it can really help!

I can’t believe I’m actually saying this, but I find university so much easier and less stressful than high school. I was expecting things to be the other way around, but to my surprise, I’ve improved drastically because my university actually provides accommodations for my ADHD, unlike in high school. I’m high school, I didn’t really have any accommodations for my ADHD, so I struggled to show what I was actually capable of, and I even had some teachers that didn’t understand what ADHD was, and simply saw it as an excuse. With university on the other hand, they provide so much to help every student succeed. I have accommodations for my ADHD. -time and a half for exams -I can record lectures -I am able to get extensions for assignments if needed. -I can’t have more than 1 exam within a 24 hour period (plus morning exams only) I’m really grateful to have access to these accommodations, because they really help me accomplish so much

I'm currently a sophomore in college with no accommodations and I'm struggling. Alongside the ADHD, I also have pretty severe depression and anxiety. I was in a major that I absolutely hated last year and my GPA dropped to a 1.6. I currently am now in my major that I love, but in a beginner level of the class when I've taken four years of Latin Language before. It's so frustrating and I'm pretty much in tears leaving every day because even though I know the information, I can get myself to go to classes and my test grades are starting to fall because it's no longer something I'm interested in at the beginner level. Nobody understands that though at all, so I can complain all I want, but nobody truly understands where I'm coming from when I tell them that my brain just can't be engaged in this class anymore. I've tried and tried and I'm falling short in being interested in the class. I love Latin, but need to be challenged. Not sitting in the front quiet because I'm not allowed to answer questions in order for the rest of the class to practice.

Oh, no! Alyssa, what happened? Were you able to finish the class? Does your campus have a way to test out of the lower level classes? A placement test, interview with the chairperson, credit by exam?
