I've used this process. It is completely superior to any other process I've used on pressure welds.

Thanks for your question. Yes - STT is recommended as vertical down process for open root welding. Typically using this process vertically down for any additional passes on ASME welds would not be recommended.

At 0:35 it seems the welders are doing vertical welds moving downward rather than conventional upward path for pressure pipe welding. Does STT allow downward path for vertical pressure welds?

If the opportunity to purchase this machine over a standard short-arc MIG arose-- I assume it would be able to completely replace it for anything a standard MIG would do?

Nick Kratz The Lincoln machine we have does STT and can also run as a normal hardwire welder. Also our machines run flux core as well. It has a dual wire system with 2 guns so when you press the hardwire gun, the machine automatically switches from flux mode to STT. The machine costs about 15 thousand Canadian.

how well does the STT work on thin stainless in regards to splatter control

The stt 2 welding plant is unparalleled when welding stainless under 5mm when using argon/helium gas mix and 0.8mm wire virtually no spatter less smoke and a low heat input I have welded 1.5mm dairy tubing on a turntable no problem can replace tig in most cases where I work stainless is the bulk of the work done there are over 25 stt plants in use there some 10-15 years old and still going

I'm a newbie with MIG so bear with me, but obviously this is with FluxCore right?

+JP Sureau Thanks for your question. This is NOT Flux-cored wire. It is solid wire. Usually it is in applications with pure CO2. Please keep in mind that it depends on the application though.
