The Dalek animations were definitely 3D CG animations designed to look like line art, which worked beautifully. I'm guessing one team of animators handled the Dalek animations while another handled the actor animations. The character animations look like a 2nd year art student's attempt in Adobe Flash. If you notice in the post-regeneration scene where The Doctor crosses the console room, his legs aren't even animated; it's just a "cut-out" moving across the screen South Park style. Word on the grapevine is that the team only had six months to complete it, which is an absolutely absurd deadline. This was a 3 hr long story - most CG Disney & Pixar films, which are about half the length of Power of the Daleks, typically get no less than a year for production. This project should have been given 2 years, minimum.

I've never been bothered by the animation of these missing episodes. The chances of the original footage of Power of the Daleks may be lost forever so I'm perfectly fine with what we've got. Besides, the animation is 100% better than whatever you call the animation on Nutchack.

Great little analysis of this subject Im inclined to both agree and disagree with you really...on the one hand I completely agree that I found elements of Powers animation to be a little bit lacluster (Mainly as you mentioned in facial features and expressions and also in how they moved about) I also agree that I think, quite rightly, that they have all the time in the world to do these animations and that a plan of consistency and and quality would be a definate investment (as you say were not going anywhere so take your time and make it a damn fine representation) Where I disagree with you would be regarding taking a step back and sacrificing the authenticity in favour of the narrative. I can see your point in Power; You are right there are periods of silence that are absolutley painful to sit through where live action would really thrive with the nuances of the cast and direction. But for me; authenticity is what I look for in these stories. it sounds rediculous but the fact I had to internally justify buying powers animated episodes because I didnt agree that they'd animated it in 16:9 aspect ratio summises my feelings on the subject. I like the fact they keep it as close to the original transmitted episodes as possible. I dont mind very subtle liberties (I believe Bart simpsons head turns up on a wall in the invasion) but the moment they start directing and animating these episodes with the mind of a 21st century production is for me the time that they've lost my interest. I'd like the jump from live action to animation to be as seamless as possible and i realise this is a problem of my own construction. But Its just the way I feel...I couldnt get into the "Power" reimagined live action mini series that came out a few years ago for the same reason...they took too many liberties and kept too many similarities to a story that realistically is best enjoyed as a moody black and white atmos piece... TLDR; Good episode, I both agreed and disagreed with what you said. Looking forward to more of this fine fine stuff

I have an idea, how about we look back further the 2004 or 5 at the Polar Express and just basically just do the power of the Daleks episode all over again just with that type of animation because how the animation got done in the Polar Express it almost look like they actually use actors in the movie

I personally don't mind the animation from the power of the Daleks or the other missing episodes because the writing and acting is great that I can overlook it. Plus I grew up watching transformers Cybertron as a kid, which if you've seen that show, you know the animation is rather limited. Anyways, the animated power of the Daleks has at least allowed me to actually see this story that has been hyped up as one of the best and it definitely lived up to it.

TBH I don't really mind the way they've been reanimating old episodes. They really capture the eeriness of the era. If they were going to throw money into higher quality animation, I'd rather it was an original project. As you say, the tracks (and by association the story) aren't really made for animation, and while you could maybe rework them to fit better, writing and original script that takes full advantage of the medium would be preferable to me.

I'm not buying into the hype this time. A recap of how many times we've been had... 1) In _"Asylum of the Daleks,"_ there was this big hype about classic Daleks & the Special Weapons Dalek making a return, and they ended up being background scenery in a few select shots. 2) On the poster art for _"Dark Water,"_ The Doctor was holding a classic-style Cybermen head, leading to this big hype about how they would be returning. The background imagery in that poster was strikingly similar to the famous march scene from _"The Invasion."_ This turned out to be nothing but LITERALLY a single shot where a classic style Cybermen head falls on the ground. Seriously...that was literally the only time it appeared in the whole fucking story. 3) For _"The Magician's Apprentice/The Witch's Familiar,"_ it was again stated that the classic style Daleks would be returning. Once more, they played a minor role in the story AT BEST. At worst, they were yet again just background scenery. Adding to this fuckery, Moffat retconned 50+ years of Davros canon by having his eyes open. (Which were supposed to have been burned out in an experiment years before _Genesis of the Daleks._) So yeah.....I have ZERO expectations for this shit. I'm not getting fooled again.

So, Stu, what animation is your favorite and which is your least favorite? My favorite is the Moonbase because I think the character models look the best and it's one of the most active. Second favorite: Ian Levine's Mission to the Unknown. I really don't know why. I just think it was excellently done. Third favorite: The Ice Warriors. Simple but effective. I knew who everyone was and the motion was really good. The only problem was that it was a bit too 2-dimensional. Third to least favorite: The Tenth Planet. I don't really know why for this one. It was very similar to the Moonbase, but the whole thing just felt a little off to me, like the full effort wasn't being given. Second to least favorite: The Reign of Terror. I just don't think the story really worked as an animation and the head animations were really creepy. Least favorite: The Invasion. The character models are pretty bad and the animation is very jerky. It had some good atmosphere, but I don't think it did justice to my favorite classic story.

They're NEVER going to give an unlimited budget to these things. To begin with, there's a limited audience for these things... They're keeping the budgets on these special releases down specifically to leave open the possibility for future projects that recreate more of the missing episodes of Doctor Who. IF they were to give these things a $20million or more budget (which WON'T happen!) AND the project(s) bombed badly, what would be the impetus to continue recreating Classic Doctor Who? That's right, even though it's Doctor Who there is STILL a limited audience for old television series done in the black-and-white days. I hate that mentality myself but the fact is you can't throw a Disney/Pixar film budget at these projects. As preferrable as well-down hand-drawn animation may be you can hardly convince anybody outside of Asia to fund these things unless they're modestly-budgeted TV series! For the money being paid out, it's going to continue to be limited animation, like it or not... I don't think most people have a clue how much FULL-animation costs (classic 1940s Disney-style) versus limited animation (most of what you see produced for TV). It's easily 3-4 times whatever most people think a "cheap" full-animation feature costs. Nowadays, I don't think you do an honest to goodness full-animation feature for less than $70 million and that's not even including the marketing budget! The story would STILL have to be kept modest. You add in Star Wars-type battles, dogfights, swordfights, it gets tremendously expensive ($130million-plus) SO unless you want to fund that kind of film yourself OR get into management of a film studio, feature-quality animation just isn't happening with a Doctor Who restoration project. Now, I agree, the look of the recreated episodes (in animation) is all over the place but how else it going to be unless they create model sheets everybody has to use and agree on one style? Not gonna happen with different production studios even if they DID have standard model sheets! You farm out these projects to different companies, they'll each have their own look.

i dont blame you, doom coaltion 3 wasnt great, and i got doom coalition 4 just before it went on general sale so i could get it cheaper, doom coalition 3 like doom coalition 2 was a drag, the 3rd disc of 3 is quite good but the other 3 discs where nothing special, not terrible but not brilliant, almost felt like one of the more average 8th doctor edas or a new who episode, doom coalition 4 disc one was quite good kinda reminded me of scherzo however its no where near as good as scherzo but its fun, disc 2 was completely forgetabel and disc 3 and disc 4 are fantastic and worth the cost of the boxset in my opinion. disc 3 is probably the second best (spoilers ahead however if you seen the cover you know the "twist") the second best weeping angel story in doctor who (the best being blink imo) and episode 4 was fantastic aswell. thats my review. hope it helps. also pre-ordered charlotte pollard 2 and i own season 1 but i havent finnished her adventures with 6 yet, i just listened to patient 0 and absolutely loved it.

Authenticity versus stylized animation. Frankly, I always thought superheroes looked BETTER in animation than live-action. The high-end was definitely in the 1990s and early 2000s for those characters. Stylized animation for Classic Doctor Who? Hmm... That could work. It would still be limited animation but would get away from the constraints of expectations for live-action... Unfortunately, the general public will go for live-action or "realistic animation" (which is a contradiction IMHO) over stylized animation 3 out of 4 times. I don't know why it's programmed that way, it just is...

I totally agree with the whole post-regeneration sequence; there's just something terribly "off" about it. Since this is the opening, I think it will turn off a lot of people from actually delving into the story itself. Which is a shame because once it gets rolling the animation does get smoother and the Daleks do look quite good. But it is true - why do they keep contracting different companies for these? I still think that The Invasion, ironically the first experiment, had the best animation. Ben and Polly in PotD were so badly rendered (and the secondary characters not) that it was distracting. (and who thought that 1967 Anneke Wills could look bad?)

I don't know, I've always thought Fury works better as a recon than an animation just because of its aesthetics. It's such an atmospheric piece and about 80% is just standing around and talking, but the atmosphere and the fear and foreboding on the actors' faces is what really carries it through, and dark and foreboding is something that animations tend to be poorer at. The animations work the best for more action based and sci-fi heavy stories and are worst for slow stories and historicals, which is why I think the Reign of Terror animation is generally considered one of the worst animations (and because it was really creepy). There are only three serials from 60s Who that I just cannot see as an animation, or at least not as an animation at the quality they are at now, and those three are Fury from the Deep, The Edge of Destruction (which we thankfully have), and the Abominable Snowmen. These are all slower paced and are largely driven by dialogue. By comparison, the Moonbase and Mission to the Unknown, which are my favorite animations, are very active and fast paced. Just my opinion.

the animation in the re-created episodes are very clunky from time to time....I've always thought they should stick with whoever re-created the missing 10th planet episode because that was possibly the most well done animation out of the re-created episodes

MrTheevilmage 2nd best. Have you seen the moonbase? Because it is gorgeous. It is so good in parts 1 and 3 that I don't even care that those two are missing episodes, because it's brilliantly consistent and gels together perfectly. In fact if moonbase was entirely missing, I think I might've even preferred the entire thing to be animated.
