Sherlock stopped being clever as soon as series 2 ended. Series 3 was fun to watch, but not clever. Series 4 is just silly.

As a fan of the original Conan-Doyle books, I can safely say that I can't think of one moment of the episode that was in the original books. Euros was also invented for the show.

Molly was also invented for the show, Irene was destroyed for the show, Microft graduated to "silly ol' brother", John turned into "I can't stand life" and Sherlock went to what people think is "human", but it's actually "whimpy man who thinks he's clever".

I *hated* this episode. It was really fucking bad. Like, bad enough that I think in officially done with this show. Like Jesus Christ it was a mess, legitimately insulting to my intelligence. And I know I'm by no means even close to the only person who jumped ship because of this one. When people are regularly tuning in to bloody Apple Tree Yard expecting that it suddenly gets hijacked by a "secret fourth Sherlock episode" to clear up all this shit, you know you've screwed up.

Mycroft is the great unsung hero of the entire show. That said, I don't understand why Mycroft and Sherlock had to resort to cloak and dagger deception to get into the island, considering Mycroft's position in the government.

Completely agree with you on Moriarty. I really feel like Moffat and Gatiss biggest regret was having him killed in Series 2 so from that point forward until Eternity every case Sherlock would have would be connected to Moriarty from the grave...Enough is enough with the guy. (exactly what Moffat does with Clara). My Breaking point was The special when in the Victorian era when that person removes the hoodie and it turns out to be him and him and Sherlock look half a second away from kissing....GOOOOD, MY EYESSS!!!

Also, the reason for the incredibly vapid revenge-i-never-had-a-friend theme is Moffat has weird ideas about women and thus writes them like shit. More or less every larger decisionn by every female Moffat-character, ever, ends up being motivated by not getting enough attention from the main guy, or wanting to be with him, or (if she's a good girl) sacrificing herself for him. Maybe not so surprising considering the writer himself has described women as essentially needy creatures.

In my opinion they should've completely cut out the Eurus part from Lying detective and just ended the entire series with that scene of Sherlock and Watson talking to each other at the end of the episode.

if Moriatry had one mention in Series 3, no mention throughout Series 4 until the final episode, I would've been fine with that. And I'm sorry but I'd much prefer another Irene Alder appearance due to her character kinda obviously being a brilliant card to play in this story but they don't use and use Molly instead....for literally no reason

I didn't mind that it turned into Sawlock for this episode, but I agree with pretty much everything you said about the ending. I'd also like to add that Eurus should have been killed off. Someone that smart, dangerous and *CLEARLY* emotionally unstable should not be allowed to live. Especially when they're putting her back in the prison that she just managed to take control of, even if she's their sister.

The problem with Sherlock is that it set the bar so high that we're almost bound to be disappointed by most of it. The Lying Detective was not only one of the best Sherlock episodes, but one of the best pieces of TV ever. The Final Problem left me angry in its shitness, but much more terrified that that might be the end of Sherlock. I knew we were doomed with this one as Moffat does not write women well. I was expecting some convoluted and shite reason why Euros was mental.

Money on the table. They're going to come back in 2020 with a New Year's Day special during the lull after both actors have earned a temporary reprieve from their Marvel contracts. It's received poorly and that's the end of Sherlock forever. That is until 2047 when they do a Comic Relief sketch together.

That glass bit annoyed me sooooo much, and it wasn't actually needed. They could have had all the glass panes there except 1 to the side. Sherlock focusing on his sister might not notice a pane missing that was to the side. She could even bang on the glass between them. Reach around and bang Sherlock into the glass knocking him out, then calmly walk around... Anything but what they did. FYI most videos you see of people running into glass doors are people running out of the door during the day. The reason is you have little or no reflection when you are inside and it is lighter outside. But Sherlock was in an evenly lit room, he should have been facing a clear reflection of himself, but he wasn't. This isn't obvious to the viewer as we saw the scene from an angle (so wouldn't necessarily see the reflection) but Sherlock was facing the 'glass' it would have been obvious to him that there was no glass.

What I hated was the he's a good man comment. Uhhhh... no. He's a murderer, manipulator, liar, a shit brother(wtf give mycroft PTSD BEFORE Eurus gets him, great idea, mate), a horrible wanker. That doesn't mean we can't like him, but that earnest, overly sentimental comment was ridiculous when you think about it.

Season 2 was the most consistent and ended on a stupidly high note, Season 3 gets a bad rap for laziness/self-indulgence but was on hindsight more consistent in tone and quality with S1/S2. Season 4 was a fucking mess all round, with insane swings in quality (one dull episode, followed by a brilliant one, and topped off with a stupid, insane finale, etc).

there's a kid's book series about Sherlock's sister called Nacy Holmes. I only read the firat one. It was pretty good. No where near this crazy though. She was just a lot younger then Sherlock and Mycroft so they kind of forgot about her and left her to her own devices.

I don't think the ending was a bad idea, it was just poorly explained. It's not until Sherlock's line about Euros wanting context that it's made clear that the main reason she did all this was to watch Sherlock and try to understand his emotions, so she could figure out why everyone thought she needed to be locked away. It is a bit more complex than simply being about revenge, but that's not made clear.

While not as good as the Lying Detective, somehow I was able to get past the highly unusual premise to the story, and just roll with it. Very different for Sherlock without a doubt, but when I accepted it as something separate pretty much, I actually enjoyed it, and found it to be quite tense at times. That being said, Euros definitely got over the top at times. Also, on the "reveal" of why she was doing it, I found it pretty good. It shows how she is stuck in this same character she was when she was so young, and just the idea that it was actually his friend that she killed was just freaking dark. If that is the ending of the show though, I wouldn't be satisfied. That ending was so cheesy, that it was kind if awful.

He was chained to the bottom. But Sherlock magically managed to make the chains evaporate. You know, he has the Hug-of-Redemption after all - certainly he can make metal evaporate. John was filled with guilt; Sherlock hugged him; all of John's doubts and self-hatred disappeared. Eurus was a psychopath who has been killing people since she was a little girl, Sherlock hugged her and all her psychopathic behaviors were gone. Series 5 will just be curing super-villains by hugging them.

@cmw3089

Not about the "characters". About Sherlock only. Sherlock (against his will, I'll agree) was cruel to Molly, but apparently she didn't care about it. John is suddenly a jerk, without any explanation of why. Mycroft suddenly admires soldiers without explanation. What happened to "a soldiers courage, another name for stupidity"? There's no explanation except that Mycroft is suddenly more obviously self-sacrificing. But then that's the point of every character. The function for each character - sacrifice their jobs and lives for Sherlock, because they love him and his verbal abuse. Don't get me started on Eurus. I hate that a person who rapes and murders is supposed to be a sympathetic character.

I'd like to post a well written comment explaining and justifying my opposing opinion on this episode (which I liked quite a bit!) but I don't have the energy right now and frankly I don't think anyone would care. I mean you even openly discredit differing opinions in the video (and I know that you were just saying that people who create their opinion on the back of someone else's and then use that other person's opinion as the only justification for their opinion isn't really meaningful to any kind of discussion, but it still demonstrated (to me at least) a lack of respect for other opinions) so I just won't. Reading it back that all seems to come off as mean, which isn't my intent at all. I love your videos and hearing your opinions! I'm just tired and don't think my ideas would interest you all that much.

Hey go for it, I ain't gonna stop you. I don't claim my opinion's more important than anyone else's, I'm some twat on the internet with a youtube channel, what do I know? Go for it, I'm interested. I wouldn't say I discredit differing opinions, opinions on art don't need discrediting, its all subjective. As you said, it was just a joke at the expense of something I see online a lot (people pointing to certain critics giving something a good review as evidence that a bad review is wrong, which just seems silly to me. If you like something surely you should offer your own justification as to why instead of pointing at other people's as if the fact people agree with you is proof of anything) Do I need to mild myself down a bit, maybe? I want people in my comment section to feel like they can express whatever opinion they have on something without having their head bitten off Get some sleep man. Sleep is good :p

Stubagful After a night's sleep and a day to think it over, god I acted like a bit of prick with that comment. Sorry about that. In regards to thinking you don't value other people's opinions you've actually never given me that vibe, honestly (there are plenty of reviewers who do give me that vibe, which may have been stoking that flame). Thanks for responding, I think it's awesome that you read comments and interact with your audience. That's really cool of you! As for what I thought of the episode, after rewatching your review I don't think my opinion is actually all that different from your's. The major thing I liked about it was how weird it was (mainly because it was dark in a really bonkers way) and you also mentioned enjoying that weirdness. You're also dead right about the third act reveals (about Euros' motives and the plane thing being in her mind palace) being off. I'm not sure if they bothered me that much, but they definitely bugged me the more I thought them over afterwards. Especially because they were a lot of tell with little show, in my opinion. I also really didn't like that scene of Sherlock unlocking the song's code by the gravestones. It was so rushed and came out of nowhere. But I'm focusing on the bad when I really did love this one. I thought Euros was great, really scary and intimidating in a way that other major villains haven't been in this show. Not that she's better than them, just different which is nice. Honestly Charles whatever of series 3 just sorta felt like he came out of nowhere to fill in the same role as Moriarty. Anyway, onto Moriarty. That's one area where I actually do go the total opposite direction, I loved his inclusion in the episode. That whole helicopter scene and walk through the prison, to me, was awesome. And then the reveal that it was taking place in the past and that he was Euros' Christmas Treat, I loved it. I gotta admit my bias though, I love Sherlock's version of Moriarty and even though I didn't want him to come back to life (he died and death has to matter) I loved seeing him, especially for what could be the final episode. I hated his inclusion in The Abominable Bride (that episode stinks) because he was WAY over the top, but I thought this was perfect. As for the Saw stuff, I can see that the 'whose the better person to kill' thing is overdone, but I couldn't help feeling tension during those scenes. Maybe it's because I haven't seen that much media with those mind torture scene ideas (I've actually never seen a Saw movie, I just know about them) but I thought it was done really well to get the emotion to shine through. I loved the line 'we're viewing science from the perspective of lab rats,'. It just sorta hit me and made me uncomfortable. Overall, I might look back and see The Lying Detective and The Final Problem and Sherlock's version of Heaven Sent and Hell Bent, but I feel like The Final Problem is WAY better than Hell Bent. It's not as good as The Lying Detective though, I will concede that, haha.

Don't worry about it :) I do have a bit of a confrontational tone in videos like this one. I try and read as many comments as I can and respond if I have something of value to say. I get so many these days that it is difficult, cause, y'know, work and commuting's pretty time-consuming. But I do really like it when people post their own reviews in the comments, and I have learnt a lot from them over the years. Sian Brooke was bloody marvellous! I kinda wish she'd been cast as Missy tbh, I did get some master vibes from her. I'd have loved it if she'd been in a different episode and under different circumstances, I felt she was a bit weighed down by the ridiculous island prison stuff. We can agree to disagree on Moriarty in this one. I do like Andrew Scott in the role, but I feel Gatiss and Moff have probably been regretting killing him off so early in the series' life and haven't been able to let him go. Its more a plotting and script thing than just the idea of him and the performance. I will agree final problem is nowhere near as bad as Hellbent. Its just a similar situation whereby the jump from Heaven sent to hell bent is really jarring because they're such different episodes

Oh man, if Michelle Gomez had been the Rani (or a whole new character) and then later on Sian Brooke hade been cast as a female Master, that would've been amazing! She is very Master-y! You're definitely right about Gatiss and Moffat regretting the decision to get rid of Moriarty so early. If they had known earlier on that the show would be as successful as it has become, they may have waited a few years to do his storyline, but I'm glad they didn't because to me, series 1 and 2 are so brilliant that I wouldn't want them any other way. It's just a shame about series 3. As you said in the review The Lying Detective is held back by context, it needs the surrounding episodes to make complete sense which is the EXACT problem Heaven Sent had (but to an even greater degree). I would've loved to tell my film buff fans who don't watch DW to watch Heaven Sent like a short movie, but it's so necessary to the plot that you know about the Hybrid thing, the Confession Dial, and what happened in Face The Raven, and then if you want the episode to be explained you have to watch Hell Bent. Because this problem is stuck to The Lying Detective as well, it can't just be watched at one's leisure, which is a shame but also connected to the idea of Sherlock just doing detective one offs that you can enjoy without a major story arc, which would be very nice if they do make more Sherlock.

I guess I'm swimming upstream here, but I LOVED this episode, just as I have LOVED every episode of this incredible series. And I really hope we get a season five!

I’d argue this episode alone is in better shape than Doctor Who at the moment. It hasn’t felt the need to force in woke, ham-handed social and political issues unlike Doctor Who. And to be perfectly honest, I still see cleverness in this episode and it might be because I love the show so much and the stupid episodes of Doctor Who don’t have the power to do that.

Are you going to do any reviews on the earlier series? I'd like to see that.

I've rewatched this review 3 times now just for fun, yet only had to endure 1 viewing of the actual episode itself. That ludicrous excuse for a piece of television was almost worth it just so that Stu could hilariously rip it to pieces
