The thing Countryside had going for it was you kept waiting for the other shoe to drop: when was the sci-fi thing going to pop up and reveal itself? Then it never did. It was human atrocity. It was the first time Torchwood delved into an actually adult idea they’d become known for later.

Thanks again for inviting me to Snuggly Chibnall Time, Stu! I laughed (and cried) a lot and together we had the funniest, snuggliest, greasiest times! I can see myself coming back to this video a lot if I ever need a wheeze/giggle.

This is why Doctor Who has been moved to Sunday; in the past parents have found it hard to get their kids to bed on a Sunday night in preperation for the beginning of the school week after the excitement of the weekend has broken their routine. But now, thanks to Chibnall's Doctor Who the little tykes will be off to sleep in no time.

This video is basically a timeline plotting when Chibnall developed each fault in his writing that is continually criticized to this day. Like, early on in the video, he would only make one mistake we currently see lobbied at him, but getting into Series 7 the mistakes get mixed and matched each episode. I just realized this when watching the Power of Three segment as the episode has both the "overstuffed plot with too many ideas" and the "stopping the episode to ask the companions how they feel" tropes. It is kinda fascinating.

My problem with 42 is that it’s basically The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit but shorter and less interesting

Jesus, that skeleton in the jar. My little brother had one of those; they used to sell them in educational toy stores and museum gift shops, with the idea being the kid assembled the plastic skeleton and learns about the human bone structure. Why the hell they put a toy for seven-year-olds on that set is beyond me... Ah! And I found it online too! The Bones Book and Skeleton by Workman Publishing, for ages 6 to 12.

Oh god, that was one of the most hilarious things iv'e watched in a long time. I died with the brian cox impressions and the chibnal sweat shop!

So the reason the power of three is so underwhelming is because the actor who played the big bad villain decided DW was 'below' him, so he quit half way through filming. That's also why it's the shortest episode of new who.

Fun fact: The Actor who played Reece from Torchwood lived near me for a few months during the time Chibnall was announced as Show Runner. I asked what he felt about Torchwood/Doctor Who and their characters now Chris is in charge? And he said he felt more optimistic that the Torchwood characters could come back in Chibnall’s Era!

It's weird that Russell refused to edit Chris's scripts. I get it with Steven, but I don't see what Chris did to earn that respect.

I watched the whole of torchwood series 1-4 when I was 12, and I absolutely loved every episode because I didn't know what was coming, especially Countrycide. I don't think I _should_ watch it again because I have fond memories of it.

Oh my God I just realized that Chibnall wrote that insane episode of Law & Order UK where a sex worker kills an ex-cop who blackmailed and raped her and our heroes spend the whole episode prosecuting her because she hit the rapist in the head with lead pipe ten times not five times and that means she's evil...

Would love to see the four of you get back together and do a follow on to this video in retrospect of all of Chris' doctor who, to see how opinions have changed and how what was said in this video have either happened or not

once you realise that chibnall can't stop having people holding up sonic screwdrivers or other items like they're scanning devices you can't un-notice it. It's like he thinks they're tricorders from star trek

What I remember most about 42, is how clean shaven David Tennant is throughout some of the scenes.

Goodness me, I thought Chris's tendency to overuse the sonic was bad in Doctor Who. I didnt even notice that Jack was given a sonic like device purely for the sake of so it looks like hes doing something.

I was dying at "Chibnall's Sweat Shop" stuff. I can't get the image out of my head.

To be fair, a British secret intelligence taskforce being perceived as extremely suave and professional but actually being filled with a pack of inept dummies is pretty realistic

I think the thing that makes Chibnall’s writing more compelling for me is that he really understands the Doctor’s character in a way I appreciate, and he seems to know how to incorporate a common theme really well into the narrative of each of his Who episodes. Something I picked up on in each of his who stories but especially 42 and Cold Blood is a constant push/pull of the Doctor’s inherent idealism and other characters’ inherent cynicism. Sometimes the idealism wins out (to the point that the cynical character will then have to reassure the Doctor in a moment of need) and sometimes it doesn’t, but it’s an interesting through line for the person in charge of this show to be thinking about in more than abstract terms. Also, I just think that for as much as stuff like 42 or the Silurian story is *structured* very basically, the central premise is unique enough that I always prefer them to more basic base under siege plots that we tend to get.

This may be wishful thinking on my behalf, but _maybe_ this kind of by-the-book professionalism is what DW needs right now. We've learnt from Moffat that giving someone with a back-catalogue of great one-off story ideas doesn't necessarily mean that they will be a good showrunner. Let the safe pair of hands build the foundations and then give the Moffat-types limited supervised play within its confines. Though I like some of the Chibnall episodes you dislike, I agree with you for the most part and am too optimistic for the new era of the show :) also those podcast segments with the 5WF was fucking hilarious mate! I follow all of you write a lot but would love to hear more commentaries like this! Is it a regular thing you guys do and i've just missed it? Now THIS was something Unlike that overhyped shallow teaser...

1:11:32 YES OH PLEASE YES THAT WOULD BE SO AWESOME!!! And we've also got to see what the Ice Warrior society was like. Preferably before they even got their armour. And then you could link Silurians, Ice Warriors and Draconians somehow. And then I'd love to see more of the Ood society, the Sensorite society and the society that the Teller creatures would create once they've developed.

I'll give the added humor in this a 9 out of 10. Well done! The thing about "42", for instance, is that I only very vaguely remember it. Weren't the characters running around, getting sweaty & dirty faced, in the space ship/base, "in corridors?! Chibnall, the younger, would be appalled. I'd put his writing, his showrunning down as mechanical. The pieces are there, sometimes too many, unnecessarily, some poorly used. His moments of near brilliance, few. Some of his writing, a bit appealing. As showrunner? Meh? I'll watch the next season, I know you're a fan, we'll hope for better. We may well not see that better until he's gone. Enjoyed the review!

On the whole, I feel worried but optimistic about Chibnall's New Reign. Before that though, this riffing review of Chibnall's work was funny and well-done! Props to you for editing down hour-long portions of this whole thing! Especially considering that you had to sit through the more...what's the word? AH, yes: *Shit* parts of his products (and not the ones from his glowing-reviews sweat shop) in small doses while editing. Anyway, on to Chibnall's Candidly Composed and Created Crafts. I enjoyed 42, but after 10 got possessed and it went nowhere I lost most of my interest. T fact that the (le gasp) *Sentient* Sun was attacking them because they took a part of it was a nice twist, but still hollow when it just stopped altogether. An average story that looks pretty (not like the simple lighting after Series 4.) Now I *really* liked the Silurian two-parter! At *first.* Then I saw (DW &) The Silurians. I just shifted all my love over to that since it's the original that it copied plot-point-for-plot-point. Doesn't help that it's one of the best (if not the) best Silurian Stories alongside The Sea Devils & Bloodtide in my opinion. Also, I hated the Mom character. Her actions make sense, which is good since it means he can do some, at least, decent characterization, but it felt like an irrational person *pretending* to be a caring mother to me. Though the 1st Part is better than the 2nd, which is the representation of a straight dive from a climax. Overall, slightly-above average. Pond Life: Meaningless; a few chuckles; barely any context for the empty joy of Asylum of The Daleks; could be skipped and not much would change for the viewer's comprehension. Below average. Dinosaurs (DeeNnnaAA) on a Spaceship. Average. Brian...At least I think that's his name, and Rory are probably the best parts of the episode while everything else is pretty much distraction or filler until *one* action, **one,** resolves everything. Pretty meh. OH, wait, Silurian Ark... Don't know why they would want to go into space if they want to reclaim their planet in future but eh, Space Silurians evolved beyond recognition being the Baddie Of The Week would be a good twist. Silurians vs. Ice Warriors or the two working together would be cool too. Preferably back when that old Global Silurian Empire with the different classes (which apparently explain the different Silurian Types in Classic & New Who) was still around. The Power Of Three. I forgot this existed until it popped up in the video. Nothing really memorable besides Brian's(?) antics and The Doctor playing on a Wii. Plus the introduction of Kate Stewart who I can only really remember having about one moment of badassery between this episode & the Zygon 2-parter. The Amy & Rory stuff was meh, and the foreshadowing of their death by the Doctor's description of how his companions leave is nice by itself, but goddamn ***heavy*** in telling the viewer of what's gonna happen in Manhatten. Average. P.S. is probably the best thing Chibnall has done that's good and that I enjoyed. It wraps up the aftermath of Angels take Manhatten nicely and gives closure to Brian's arc put in place by (rolls eyes) Power Of Three. It also doesn't leave him in too much of a bad way because he has a grown-up grandson to look after and talk to. Pretty good. Haven't seen any of his Torchwood stuff so I can't comment on that, but he seems like a decent writer who can sufficiently plan out a series arc and finish it with a pretty decent if quick conclusion. I have seen Broadchurch and thought it was good, but I can't for the life of me understand *why* it went beyond one series if the plot was wrapped up and all the characters had achieved their goals, for better or worse. The one thing I got from it was that he is good at writing individual characters and incorporating their arcs into the overall storyline very well. I'm worried mainly because of the decision to make the Doctor a female and if it doesn't get people interested enough to watch it'll probably just leave Doctor Who in the populace's mind as "Oh, that meh/bad, weird Sci-Fi show." as it's been, in my area anyway, for a few years. But the one thing that both comforts and terrifies me is that the quality of the stories will *ultimately* determine what Doctor Who is thought of and what it will become. If it's thought of as "Oh, yeah, that good Sci-Fi show!" then I will be thankful for Chibnall's, Jodie's and everybody *else* who made Doctor Who a better show than what came before it.... Also, I believe he can solve his own problems and not ignore them like how Moffat did with his Story Arcs and his "mystery thing of the series," but I would need a 4 page Word Document to outline my issues with what Moffat became after Series 6, possibly during Series 5. Regardless, I'm optimistic, still not getting my hopes up unfortunately, but I wish Chibnall the best of luck to make good Doctor Who! :)
