From a lifeguard: Never fight against a rip current always let it take you out, it won’t take you out too far. Once you are out of the rip swim at least 5 metres across then start heading back to shore always save your energy for waving for help. Rips don’t kill you, tiredness does.
@anthonyquinn32099 ай бұрын
So if there is a sweep, should you try to swim in the direction of it? You know how when you go in the water you end up way further across the beach over time. Would it be possible to swim horizontally, but against a sweep?
@agarrikr29967 ай бұрын
I have a question. Is there a difference between a rip current and a strong current? Why are some beaches just closed to the public like Reynisfjara because of the « currents » Isn’t it just rip current? What if some world pro open water swimming goes there and doesn’t fight against the current. Will it be a regular rip in cold waters? Or is it literally too strong of a current that’ll take you extremely far.

I’ve had to rescue people 3 times from rip current. 1st thing-Look at the surface of the water before entering. Rip currents are easy to spot typically. Looks for a calm area to enter the water. Rip currents look like a river running in a specific area. If you get caught in one stay calm. It will decrease in strength as it pulls you out. And you need your strength once it calms down. Swim sideways with the shoreline. When surfing, a rip currents is a great place to paddle out into the line up.

It can take you up to twenty miles out to sea. Best bet is always swim parallel to the beach out of the current or diagonally to the beach. Currents like that are usually only narrow. Not convinced this is a riptide they usually pull you down and out FAST

Treading water would be impossible in a riptide.

Rip currents are not the problem, there is an easy strategy: do not fight it and then swim back once you are not in there anymore. Much more dangerous are breaking waves if you swim near the beach. If they are big enough and breaking over you, they‘ll crush you and often hit you down to the ground where you can get unconscious and then game over.
@AndrewCooperr4 ай бұрын
Let the rip take you out then swim side ways and then swim in. Don’t fight the current, you’ll always lose. If the waves are big, wave for help.
