Primal Outdoors - Camping and Overlanding

Күн бұрын

Headed out winter camping and the snow was starting to melt and was a bit slushy. Ended up stuck in the snow on a forest road. It was clear that I wasn't going to make it any further so I decided to stay overnight right where I was and worry about getting my stuck van out in the morning. Even though it wasn't the location I had on my mind it turned out to be a very nice break after the hecticness of the holidays. I think I need to go out and get stuck more often when I go winter camping.
The next morning the temperature had warmed which did have me a bit worried about the snow being even more slushy than the day before which could make backtracking out of the location more difficult. It wasn't hard to get my stuck van out and I was quickly on my way.

Great video ! After decades of snow driving, it's a rule for me any ways. To change to a narrower set of tires, and always carry a set of good snow chains ( two sets for 4x4 ). Wider tires have a tendency to plow snow, instead of cut through the snow. Thus, causing for more chances to get stuck. Now the tire change may not be worth it, if you're only a weekend snow bunny, but the chains still would be a good investment.
@PrimalOutdoors
@PrimalOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
Have always found chains to be more hassle than value. I have heard of the skinny tire idea before and I think it would be a good option in snow that is fresh or even heavy wet snow that isn’t deeper than the diff. Fatter tires aired down float better allowing you to stay on top of the snow which is more ideal. Unfortunately my tires are 12 ply so they don’t create as much surface area aired down as say lower ply tire would, but considering much of my exploring is in the high desert where there is a ton of large jagged rock, the 12ply tires keep me from getting rock punctures. If your not floating on top at some point heavy wet snow like in this video builds up under and in front of the rig and doesn’t matter what tires or chains your running its not going to be able to push it. One last point about chains is they have to be able to reach a firm surface like the ground or solid ice to be of value, if you get enough snow built up under or the vehicle to where your tires are no longer reaching a firm surface the chains will just clear the snow underneath the tire and leaving you sitting on the snow like jack stands. Don’t get me wrong chains can be of value, but I see a lot people talk about chains like they are this unstoppable beast, but that is just not the case. Jason

@@PrimalOutdoors You'll never know until you try it ! There are plenty of tires with high ply ratings for protection against punctures. As for the chains, they have never let me down yet ! Happy Camping !!

@@Charles53412 Based on your response I just wanted to make quick clarification I wasn’t indicating my tire brand was special because they are 12 ply there are other brands that offer 12 ply tires, my point was a 12 ply from any brand is not going to air down and give you as much surface area as say 6 ply from any brand. I also want to be clear in the fact I am not trying to say you are wrong about chains being useful, you obviously have a long standing experience in using them and know what they are capable of and not capable of doing and I fully respect your opinion on the matter, I just don’t want folks that are new to snow wheeling to get a unrealistic impression of what chains can do and it up in bad situation. So many people don't know about or they can't get into our wild spaces. During the Pandemic my daily walks into the forest with my dog have kept me going. I also love going to the Oregon coast and have been fortunate enough to spend time there this winter. I don't take any of my ability to do this for granted. I know there are "city people" who would feel lost and intimidated in an Oregon forest but I'm not one of them. I love the drone footage because it is something I could not see unless I was a bird.

@liveandletsbuild2701
@liveandletsbuild2701 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnripley6298 I believe one factor that comes into play is what kind lifestyle you want to have while you are on the road. I personally like going totally off grid for several days at a time. So that might mean that my water reservoir is a little bit larger, I might have more solar and battery capacity for electricity, and I may include other amenities like an outdoor shower. Others may only need a few days worth of electricity, water, etc. so their systems may be smaller or all together different. Another factor that comes in the play might be the type of rig that you were using. I am currently renovating/building out a Ford E250 with a 4.9L inline 6. The gas mileage isn’t bad, however it doesn’t have as much horsepower is a V8 or a V10, so how much you will end up spending on gas is another factor to consider.

Never commented on this channel before, but kinda wanted to throw something out there. I'm pretty sure Jason knows what a locker is, I'm also pretty sure he's capable of deciding if he wants one. He didn't seem to be worried about being stuck. And by the end we all saw that he easily got himself out, didn't even use the winch. The whole part of being stuck seemed like a non issue to me. Just another great night in the woods. Thanks for taking me along with you.
