Stuck injector pump. Mack 350hp. Will it be ok? Is it usable?

In this video, I attempt to free up a stuck injector pump off a Mack 350 4 valve 6 cylinder engine.
If I can resurrect the stuck pump, I’m hoping to fit it onto a Valueliner engine that has had a recent pump failure. Wish me luck!!
Thanks Sutto for lending me the truck initially, and for allowing some footage and photos.

It’s a great little truck Matty, very tidy indeed. My mate Sutto has put a lot of time and effort into cleaning it up and keeping it tidy. It was a bit nerve wracking when it had a mind of its own, but thankfully I was able to settle it down.

Brunsko had 3 of those, we called em junior burgers, as did everyone back in the day, he got me to take 1 to Sydney once, then held over, then out to Bathurst next day, loaded dog tucker, for Cowra, Young, Coota, Wagga no bassinet, how the old blokes coped in B, R S2, 4000, 9000, W, SAR, Wake up like a half open pocket knife, jeez they were tough men!!

All the way with SBA! Yeah he had a few, apparently they used to get a bit excitation or surging in the fuel pumps, which is where the rack in the pump would get into a pattern of moving forward and back slightly causing the truck to get a wobble in it under slight load. I guess that’s the reason he went away from them after the Valueliners. Haha you don’t realise how much room is in a new truck until you drive an old one 😂

I ran Macks, both 6 cylinder and V8's and some of the prices I heard of people being charged to fix them were just eye watering. The worst being a V8 pump that cost someone $12,000 in 1990!! Myself, I picked up a brand new, AMBAC V8 pump for AUD $4500 in 1995, and that was a complete steal. Spill timed it, and it fired up easy as. The best, high fuel efficiency setup was on the EA7-470 engines, the Bosch cam driven "unit pumps" were really good, at 850,000km they were still giving 100% performance. The weakness were the cylinder heads that cracked, too much load factor on a B-Double.

The V8 prices have been out of control for a while now unfortunately. They broke a lot of people with big repair costs back in their day. You did well to find a pump for that price, even if it was 30 years ago! The E-Tech 470s went well when they were going, but had a lot of cam and valve train problems in the first few years. Once they evolved into the CCRS they got to be a really good engine.

@@oldrigsdownunder7301 My 470 was made in '99 and we had the cam out at 850,000km during a rebuild (cracked heads) and it was in spec. Rebuilt the engine at home, on a concrete slab (no shed) and it ran perfect, broke a fuel economy record on the first trip. Cost me $10k in parts, saved myself 17k in labor. Who wants to pay top dollar for apprentices to work on your engine? The thing I learned which is interesting about fuel systems and fuel is the filters are only 60% efficient and dont remove dissolved moisture. I ran a 2 micron 99% efficient filter which is widely used in the mining and transport industry, and those filters get it all, even the dissolved moisture that causes rust in the common rail systems that is a failure problem.

Thanks Mike 🙏🏻 It was a bit nerve wracking for a few moments but thankfully I was out on a country road with a load on, going up a bit of a rise. It stalled out ok with the brakes. It would’ve been a bit scary if it was in town somewhere

The 350hp Mack 4 valve engines were insanely good for what they were, easily on par with a NTC-400 Cummins. Could run flat out all day on doubles and just keep going. They were also very close to a V8-400 Mack, but cost a lot less to run on fuel.
@oldrigsdownunder7301
@oldrigsdownunder7301 2 ай бұрын
Spot on Wazza. Probably the best engine that Mack made, or on par with an E7400. They punched well above their weight. Like you said, they’re very good on fuel for work they can do.

@@oldrigsdownunder7301 anyone can rebuild them, mechanically simple, the only thing to watch out for, is making sure the oil squirters aim directly under the piston. I remember there was a special marked perspex window that had to be laid on the cylinder head to line up each squirter.

Hi mate awesome video I had a similar problem with the amback pump the forkrum lever got hooked up on the dynatard switch . Once the rack went to full fuel it stayed there it was a hart stopper 😅
@oldrigsdownunder7301
@oldrigsdownunder7301 2 ай бұрын
Thanks mate 🙏🏻 I adjusted a dynatard switch once without the engine running and when I started it the revs went straight up and it seemed like they wanted to keep going. It was on an F model so I was between the wheel arch and the front wheel trying to hold the revs from climbing any more and trying to back off the screw in the back of the dynatard switch. It was a bit interesting for a few moments too 😂🤦🏻‍♂️

G'day Dave ! Very interesting this video . Thanks . The inside of a diesel injection pump is like forbidden territory . Hense the "tamper proof" cap 😀. That was another repair win on this pump. I have a question about the steering shaft from the cab to the steering gear. There is a long shaft to a universal joint near the front of the engine , then looks like it heads over to the LH side of the truck. Is the steering gear on the LH side ? Fantastic start at the end. Nothing sounds like a Mack . Scott 🌵

I’m glad you enjoyed the video Scott. On the Australian R model chassis, which all models were based on from 1971 to 1999, the steering box was fitted to the inside of the RHS chassis rail with the exception of the CHRs, and the trucks fitted with Shepard steering boxes. So there is a bearing carrier mounted on an angle above the top of the steering box, which uses 2 universal joints close together to angle away from the turbo on a 6 cylinder, and from the head and rocker cover on a V8.
