The only problem I ever have is with the first oil change with a brand new car. The jackboots at the factory love to put the oil filters on dry them make them extremely tight. This has happened with every brand new car. I never ever take my car to the dealer or lube oil change shop. Even if the dealer offers the first 2 oil changes for free. I know that the only way to get it done right is to do it myself.

Thanks for the upload.....I was frustrated, I couldn't get that dang oil filter off. After watching this I was able to take it off....I was so afraid I was going to shred the can completely but it didn't happen. That filter was put on super tight. Thanks again for the upload I used a screwdriver and a hammer punctured 3 holes to finally get that thing to twist off

Just went through the same ordeal on my 99 Silverado. It came down to using channel locks and a large box end wrench on the handles.

I just went through everything you tried and found a 3/8 in. or 1/2 in. Drive Heavy Duty Oil Filter Strap Wrench worked the best.

99% for sured the last owner of the truck.He or she didn’t do any lubrications of the oil filter ring with some oils on the lip of the oil filter before he or she putting it on and tightening it.
@flyboyslc14 жыл бұрын
Chi, You are likely correct. Any one of three things could have contributed. No lube on the gasket as you mentioned, over tightening, and also infrequent filter changes.

Good work. I have the same problem on my 2016 honda odyssey. the oil filter looks exactly the same as yours. I’ve already collapsed the filter with trying various tools but it isn’t dripping yet. Now I am stuck wondering if I should attempt to drill into it and then stick in a screw driver or just call it quits and take it to the dealer for an oil change.
@flyboyslc12 жыл бұрын
T, I was at that same place as you, but since I didn’t need the truck on a daily basis and have other vehicles to drive, I tackled it and got it done. The dealer option would be good. I actually took mine to a jiffy lube and when I told them the filter was stuck, they didn’t want the job. But a dealer has probably encountered a stuck filter and will know how best to handle it. Make sure they grease or oil the gasket and don’t over tighten!

3 years on the truck was the problem
@flyboyslc15 жыл бұрын
Maybe, but i dont think so. cant help that as i bought the truck used. If the previous owner had oiled the gasket and torqued the filter properly it should have come off like all the others do.

I use Aeroflow oil filters, they have a nut attached to the bottom for easy removal.

7s that filter had it been on this truck may or may not have worked. The old filter had been in place a long time i think.

Thanks for the video sir . I am at the slip joint pliers point now, if that dont work I will use a screwdriver then if still no dice I am sure the pointed breaker bar will bust her off.

Mike, let me know how it works out for you.
@etmyld696 жыл бұрын
I sprayed it with lubricant and let it soak for an hour . I said a prayer and tried one last time with the slip groove pliers and she broke loose !

My filter was smashed up pretty good and cracked , but that crack let the oil drain out before I took the filter off.

YesSir. The previous guy over cranks it And or doesn't oil the gasket. The screw driver works, along with the filter wrench

crazy , I have the same engine and the same blue oil filter stuck on my 99 z71. ive almost torn the entire bottom off doing the screwdriver thing as a last resort but it still hasn't budged. ive sprayed it with lube now so I'm afraid to put a torch to it . Im not sure what's next
@flyboyslc16 жыл бұрын
n o For sure no torch. Could start a nasty fire from the remaining oil. I would i think just peel the metal off of the outside of the can and work toward the center. You may be able to take a hammer and screwdriver or punch and try to tap around the edge of the filter and break it loose. Let me know how you finally solve it. Good luck to you. Steve

DON'T USE ANY TOOLS TO INSTALL AN OIL FILTER - HAND TIGHTEN ONLY! ONLY USE A TOOL TO REMOVE AN OIL FILTER, AND ONLY WHEN IT IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY!

I had the same problem on a 99 Ford F150. I crushed that filter to he'll and back before it started to come loose. Had the same problem with the oil plug. But a cheater pipe added to my ratchet took care of that.
@flyboyslc15 жыл бұрын
Hi John. Looks like the people that did the last oil and filter change on your truck were a little too ambitious with their tools!
@condor56355 жыл бұрын
14 inch pipe wrench works great on my Suburban which should be identical to your vehicle. Plenty of room to get it in there.
@flyboyslc15 жыл бұрын
Condor, glad the pipe wrench worked for you. I tried several things that gripped the outside of the filter and each tool continued to collapse the filter. Pretty sure a pipe wrench would have continued the destruction. I needed something that applied a shear force to the filter.
@condor56355 жыл бұрын
flyboyslc1 - yeh you might be right - that why I do the work on my cars. These horror stories of filters that don’t come off are crazy!

That was brutal, good job though
@flyboyslc16 жыл бұрын
Thanks auxmike! I was almost hoping that I would have to shred the can and build my own tool. Never have seen one stuck like that. It did finally give up. I don't know if even a really large long screwdriver would have moved it. It took that construction bar to do it.

LOL... I was expecting you to tell us you found some red thread lock on there! MAn... never saw anything like that.
@flyboyslc16 жыл бұрын
Yea, that was something else! Never saw one that tight. Somebody put it on to stay! I thought I was going to have to peel off the can to get it, but glad that I did not have to do that.
@djizzah3 жыл бұрын
tip, only do the nfilter up hand tight and ALWAYS smear the rubber gasket with oil, thats what jams the filter on, thousands of heating and cooling cycles will melt that gasket to the housing and THATSA what makes the filter impossible to remove, not the tightness..for some reason noone understands this, hand tight and lube the rubber gasket and you will NEVER havce trouble getting it off
@flyboyslc12 жыл бұрын
you are right dji, but unfortunately for me, the previous owner did not do it that way.

@olmatt1366 Жыл бұрын
Believe it or not, a lot of so called technicians and mechanics these days will start these filters by hand and then use an impact to tighten them by putting a cap on it or a strap tool. Too afraid of a little bit of manual labor I guess. And yes they often forget to lube the seal at all, and just let it be somebody else's problem.
@jameskoralewski10063 жыл бұрын
Once you crush the oil filter can, you have ruined the integrity of the filter and regular filter removers are not going to work.
