Very cool unit! I like the lights and meters. None of MY boomboxes of the 80s & 90s ever had anything like that! Very impressed by it having a stereo head on the tape deck. That seems like something that's hard to find nowadays. Also I love that you played NKOTB music! I was a huge fan myself (though I was in high school at the time).

Good evening from NY. There is much pleasure, and some good sound, on listening to tapes, for me. Glad I have a few good chrome and metal cassettes blanks from back then, still, and a few partially recorded mix tapes ( can do-over). Other viewers, do what you can with components or things like this boom box to enjoy tapes. I am trying to finish the first mix tape I've done since the late 90s or so. Dubbing from LP and CD. The cassette I am re-recording on I last started earlier mixtape on sometime back then (I date my finished one.). This is with the vintage deck I sent for repair recently.

I’ve had my studebaker fir two years, not even a year in my show light of the vu meter stopped my cassette play lags a bit and found two small springs fall from the unit, other then that it sounds good for $195 bucks. I wish someone would come out with a quality built boombox that has a CD player, cassette player, radio Bluetooth capability not too plasticky like this unit, I’ll pay $2k for it!

I just bought one listed as parts for $50. Seller said it was dead and didn't turn on and CD and tape were also broken. Will see what's wrong with it and hopefully it's something simple. It definitely looks best in silver, the other colors look kind of bad on it. EDIT: I got it and it works perfectly! Seller said both CD and tape were broken and it didn't turn on. But it worked fully and with no problems? It does have something wonky with the tape deck, someone smashed the record button too hard and the cassette assembly is pushed out of alignment stuck halfway in record mode, will have to fiddle with that. The little balls that hold the CD on the hub spindle also are gone and rattling around inside the unit somehow, will try and fix that too.

The reason 5 or 10W speakers sound so good compared to the old days when we were rocking on our "30, 40, 50, 80W" etc. boom boxes, is that they were marketing numbers. Those were Peak watt, rather than true or RMS numbers. Most of the boom boxes back in the day were running around 3 to 12 watts per line tops, even on the ones touting 80W with Maxx Bass!! lol. The rare, super expensive ones were actually running 40 to 50 watts combined on all channels. Which, is still around 8 watts per line when you figure the expensive ones were running 6 speaker systems. EDIT: Usually the super clear and nice ones you could crank up with no distortion, had two true 15W Low/Full range, two 8W mids, and two 2W tweets.

I had an Hitachi boombox back in 1990 that claimed 100 watts! This was peak power of course. I found out if something is rated at 100 watts peak power then divide that by 4 to get RMS so what it actually had was 25 watts so 12.5 watts per channel which is still pretty good for a boombox. I admit, it did go quite loud without distortion.

If you look at the build and sound quality of those boom boxes of yesteryear . With the so called advanced technology of today i think its a joke to improve on or get better as they go along .. The problem is these manufacturers are always trying to cut costs in some way or another. Use this instead of that , use that instead of this , the outcome is the lowest of quality . years ago use this instead of that had a different result and the best outcome which was to choose the highest quality of parts and materials cost no object . Bottom line even if some of those boom boxes back in the day were of lesser quality , They still were / are better than what we have in today's world . And by the way some folks need to stop fooling yourself, a bluetooth speaker is not a boom box , a boombox was all in one and self contained with its own features of listening entertainment with the addition of having auxiliary inputs . The technology is here to build great boomboxes . With all the years that have gone by its clear that no one wants to build an overall high quality boombox , Why even bother to replicate and /or build boomboxes of the 70s 80s 90s ERA if you're going to continuously and intentionally keep manufacturing and churning out a bunch of wanna be boomboxes do us all a favor , and please stop wanting to do so .

I am still looking for a good portable radio that has excellent AM reception like my old Realistic hand held which had AM/FM and 5 SW bands with a stereo compact cassette. It only had a single speaker, but plugging in my 1/4" headphones was stereo. It ran on 4 "D" cells but it would play the radio at room volume for almost a full week on those 4 eveready's, when Duracell came out they ran my radio for for at least 3 weeks before they finally ran out of power.

I wish they made this, vut with a renovable battery. Not somethingvyoubhave to do surgury on to change the battery. Lithium is the best battery type, IMO. But it charges about 800 to 1200 times, depending on the type. If it starts charging everytime it is plugged in, then it won't last long enough to be collectable. Unless you repair it. Then, if the charge drops below 3% you risk it not charging again. Also I've heard that 'Studebaker' boomboxes melt in sunlight. Not even on a hot day. Is that true? Otherwise it looks amazing.

Not a bad unit. Seems much better than that one that Techmoan reviewed a little while ago (which even had a fake tape counter). At least this one appears to have actual, functioning tweeters instead of fake ones, and it actually does seem to sound decent, although tough to know as listening through KZfaq. I'd have to hear one in person myself to make a true judgement as to how it actually sounds. Not being able to use BT for both transmit and receive at the same time would make sense. Bluetooth is actually fairly limited in bandwidth thus not likely to be able to support streaming audio in both directions at the same time, plus would be pretty pointless anyway. After all, just send the audio stream directly to the device you wanted it to receive instead of trying to do it through this unit. I would also imagine that using BT with the FM radio would cause to much interference, thus why that feature is also limited. As for the trick on unwrapping/opening CDs, I've known that for years. I do remember showing it to a women while in Best Buy a few years ago (when Best Buy still sold CDs). She was trying to unwrap a CD right there in the store after she bought it as she wanted to listen to it in her car. I saw her struggling trying to get that label off. I then went up to her and politely said to her, "Let me show you a neat little trick for getting those labels off". She handed me the CD and I showed her the trick of gently unsnapping the jewel case cover off just as shown in the video. She responded how cool that was and that she'll have to remember that the next time she needs to open another CD. Also to add. The New Kids on The Block? Okay, I will admit to feeling a little bit of nostalgia as I've certainly have heard plenty of them. However, never was a fan, though as I was into things like Rush, Pink Floyd, Styx, Asia, Kansas, and Yes as well as into Iron Maiden, Ronnie James Dio, Metallica, Judest Priest, Queensryche (Friggan "Operation Mindcrime" for the WIN!), and the like during that time.

I've have this same Sound Station model for over a year now and I've played many tapes on mine heavily, thinking that the chopping sound would smooth out over the course of time. Well I'm just going to say that the cassette playback sound hasn't improved at all.👎 The motor noise is so loud, that you can hear it through the cassette audio playback and when making a recording. I just use mine as a Bluetooth boombox, because of this issue. Whenever I do decide to listen to a cassette on this boombox. I just hook up one of my Sony Walkmans , using the auxiliary cord connection and the playback quality is so much better and easier on the ear.👍

The VU meters and flashing lights are fairly pointless. The tape mechanism is at least the right way up, but typically the permanent magnet erase lets it down, and I don't know if the recording bias is AC or DC. Sound wise, the unit sounded brash and shouty, which is good for speech but could grate a bit music wise. No indication as to whether the bass control could be boosted which might improve this. A disappointing test, far too skimpy, as these retro products have good market potential but I really cannot conclude a great deal here. Based on what I did observe, I am thinking not very good compared to the original old boom boxes.

The VU meters on this are just for show. Didn't expect anything more then that. The "light show" is just OK. Would have been nice if it was more then one color and different effects. It's a real plus that the cassette deck is actually stereo. One thing to test is if they wired the channels properly. With some of these units they wire them backwards for some reason. One thing to note is that when recording from the built in mics, there is a lot of internal electronic interference in the recordings. So it makes it a pretty useless feature. Other then that it seems to be a decent unit for what it is.
