Armed with signs, rocks, and molotov cocktails, huge numbers of students and masked protesters hit the streets of Montreal to protest tuition hikes and political corruption.
For over 100 days, students in Quebec protested against proposed tuition hikes by Premier Jean Charest, the leader of an allegedly corrupt provincial government with widespread mafia links. On May 1, 2012, VICE took to the streets to see what the fuss was about.

TheCarotte444 They started as hispter apolitical nihilists. They went into news and politics as pariah's looking for sensationalist pieces. Now in 2018. They're sympathetic and empathetic to radical left. But mostly center left pro state establishment. Pro progressivism and whatever millennials seem to like at the moment. For whatever good pieces they put out. They sure like to shoot themselves in the foot a lot.

Have you stopped to think? Have you ever considered the fact that police officers with guns are sent into protests when they get too violent, ignoring how violent the government they serve to protect is? I'm not condoning rioting crimes, but don't you believe that some things are worth fighting for? You commented about riots in China having aggressive consequences, isn't that what we fight against? From the comfort of your home, please tell me all about how you make a difference. I don't understand how you can sit quiet and passive while people are suffering. What do you offer babe? What do you contribute? Will it be relevant to others lives 10 years from now? Or are you a bystander?

Nice coverage :) Thanks for coming to see my beautiful city :) Actually though, most of the footage were from an anti-capitalism demonstration. It had not much to do with the students... I went to at least 7 demonstrations. Some were as big as 200 000 people. I've never seen a rock thrown or anything. It was always very peaceful. In the end, a majority of people supported the students, because we believe in education for everyone. Feel free to ask me questions about last spring if you have some. C'était notre révolution pacifique :) Thanks. Merci.

Lol Americans don't protest cause we're lazy, it's not because we understand prices fluctuate or anything. I don't think you or anyone for that matter has the right to criticise Quebec for standing up for their rights. How can you actually be against them here? If you call it being difficult, fine. I wish I was more difficult then. My country should take them as example and so should you.

The real fact is that it started as a students movement. The more and more it went on other groups (anarchists, black bloc, leftists anarchists) started to cling on the movement. Medias did a fine job portraying the thing as a whole. Sad part is, this is one of the few solidarity movements i remember going on in North America and the whole thing got bashed and destroyed by average too comfy ''i make my opinion with the front pages of the Gazette'' people.

Most of the protestors were studeunts in lazy programs that find it to hard to have exams in form of true or false and multiple choices. Most of them never worked and are just there to fuck shit up. The majority of the protests were illegal. The spokesman Mr. Nadeau-Dubois used these protests to gain political power an land a job in the government.

See the funny thing is that the clip at the end of rioters burning the Canadian flag isn't about the protest parse, its more about the mildly strong separatist movement that has been raging since the 1970's. The government at the time the Quebec Liberal Party (QLP) is the only federalist party in Quebec, whereas there are several separatist parties such as the Parti Quebecois (PQ), of which it is the largest. During the election campaign later that year, the PQ sought to create a majority to peruse it's sovereigntist ideologies by rallying the protesters against the QLP by promising no tuition hikes. Once in office, the PQ go back on their promises, further destroy the economy, and divide the province with it's proposed charter of Quebec values. This carter suspends religious freedoms in the work place and strengthens the sentiment engraved into these anarchist pigs who want to live in a communist utopia where no one does anything, but everyone gets everything. In sum, these riots aided the election of the PQ, further degrading the position of minorities (religious and linguistic (Anglophones also being persecuted)) and aiding to destroy the economy. All this because some people don't want to pay their share, thus contributing to a looming social benefit crisis. But: Vive le Quebec!

The government employs hundreds of people, they need to pay them. It's not the government's responsibility to pay for your education ESPECIALLY when you don't even know proper grammar. Honestly, you all need to stop feeling and acting so entitled. Our government, which is one of the least corrupt in the world, already covers most of your tuition. No one is forcing you to go to school so STOP complaining about fees, not everything in life is a handout. Welcome to the real world.

Canadian banks took a 114 billion dollar bailout in 2008 financail crisis (Bloomberg news nov 2011 report - US bailout at 7.7 trilliion -11 x 700 billion TARP lie and David MacDonald report - apr 2012 - 114 billion bailout with 40 billion from private US federal reserve). Why did Harper lie about this bailout? Why is this not national news? Why were all Canadian banks insolvent in 2008 and we bail them out. Why not nationalize the banks and bring their wages in line with working Canadians?

As a student in Canada, I do support the Montreal students. But on thing they didn't mention was how cheap tuition in Quebec is. In Alberta, I play just over $5,000 for school a year, In Quebec, they pay a little under $1,500 for school a year. The increased wage hikes they are talking have changed since the bloc quebecois won the last provincial election in 2012. They want to increase tuition 5% over 5 years, with this hike, they still have the cheapest tuition in Canada

Let me choose my words a bit more carefully, Quebec spends more tax dollars than it collects. And they do so far more than anyone else(something like a -9% differential. no other province exceeds -1%). This means that other provinces' taxes end up paying for Quebec government spending. Does that seem fair to you? Also you didn't seem to want to touch the fact it the hikes don't even make up for inflation. Its simple math. Someone has to pay, and right now its pretty much Ontario and Alberta.

My mom worked part time and my dad landed a job at a shitty factory. That being said, my parents understood the importance of education, even though they didn't make lots of money, they were still responsible enough put aside a money every year for my future. It's called responsibility. There's also loans.

The proposed tuition hikes wouldn't have even made up for inflation rates. So Quebec students would be paying less than what their education is worth even with the hikes. Aside from that the majority of funding for Quebec Education comes from other provinces, and Quebec tuition for residents is absurdly low.

Hey Wanderinglauren. Just wanted to say that the tuition hike was of 325$/year to up to 1625$/year at the end, which cumulates to roughly 4200$. Please get informed before speaking nonsense. Moreover, even though it is still the lowest tuition rate in North Am., I don't think comparing with the worst system is the way to go. Furthermore, the principal argument is that student don't pay their part in society; studies advocate that universally free higher ed system is the best investment a society

Well there seems to be some confusion, communism hasn't existed yet so I'm not sure how you're basing your argument that capitalism is better if we haven't tried communism yet. The USSR, Cuba, china, NK, are all state-capitalist by definition. It just simply hasn't happened yet. But even in communism there would be incentives. It would be out of necessity, not profits. Since once communism happens, all governments and money is abolished. So I don't think the farmer analogy applies here...

That is the difference between maturity and immaturity. Mature people understand that protests can be non-violent and still achieve what the protesters intended, immature people think it is acceptable to either condone or participate in violence for the sheer purpose of selfishly saving a few dollars on tuition that is being paid from the pockets of other provinces through equalization programs.

And by the way, McCarthyism was only around for not even 25 years, and it began around the 40's. Most of the Eastern Block countries we're still going through ww2 then, so they didn't even go into the communist stage yet. McCarthyism was aimed more at the Soviet Union, China and Korea. East Block countries became communist only after the war. So McCarthyism would be a little too late for those countries. LOL NO ONE IS SUGGESTING WE PAY 40 GRAND FOR TUITION. Your point makes no sense. Bye.

Using violence and destroying public or private property is not the answer. It plays directly into their hands. Relentless peaceful protests are the only solution. If it gets violent, even previously sympathetic ears will turn against you. The protesters should have a policy of non-violence and those that break the rule should be detained by the rest of the protesters and turned over to police (that would help stop moles and saboteurs)

You obviously didn't get my point, I was talking about America, not Canada. And I made a small research, did you know Quebec is the province that pays the most taxes? so they basically pay as much as you do for their education, they are just doing so through their taxes.

I hate that people spit "get a job" or "spoiled kids" to the protesters, without stepping back to think. Yes, we have some of the lowest tuition rates in North America, but there's nothing wrong for wanting them to stay that way. Instead of standing idly while the government pretty much fucks us from all angles, these people are protecting one of the most important aspects of our society. Shift your focus from the cost - it's the principle that matters.

Nothing is free. It has to be paid for somehow. You are receiving a service from a teacher when you learn about a subject, and unless the teacher wants to work for free (which they don't, otherwise they would be) they have to be paid. You can pay for it yourself or you can have the government pay for it. If the government pays for it, it is through tax dollars and debt.. Tax dollars are taken from other people, whether they like it or not. There is no "free" education.

Actually Pauline Marois POSTPONED the Tuition fee hike. This is what helped her win by appeasing the students. It will come eventually.... don't worry

So what? They have no reason to fight? They should say "Yeah dude, we pay less than the rest of Canada or the U.S, we should be happy and be a sheep like other". No, they are right. Education should be FREE. Its the education who make peoples aware of their environement and improve it, not working 10 hours like a moron just for paying bill.

For those saying that these students are cry babies and that 3k-4k a year for college is really low, I say that education SHOULD BE FREE! Completely and utterly free. Along with health care for all people. Just because the Americans are getting totally assfucked by their government in the financial department doesn't mean everyone wants to be exploited like that.

Look at the federal support to provinces and the population of the provinces. You will notices that Quebec gets way more funding per person by the federal government than any other province. No, the education system is not being paid for by the people in Quebec; it's getting paid for by the rest of Canada.

@Klaas Klapper It is their job. A police officer would be punished much more insubordination over mistreatment. People join the police/army, are taught to obey orders, go through a brainwash, and 'serve' their country. It is not their fault. It is ultimately the government's.

i don't see what corruption in Québec has to do with the student riots. you also have to understand that these protests have been going on since the early 90s. hell, i protested myself. the protesters that you saw weren't fighting for their money; they were fighting for people years from now who will have a hard time affording education. this is a continuing process.

maybe you should look in which sectors employment is down before making such a blanket statement. and you've missed the point - they weren't rioting for themselves. they were rioting for future students. self-entitled my ass.

The protesters of my generation have no idea what they are doing. Montreal Red Squares and Occupy Wall Street handled their protests like spoiled ammateurs and with no real focus or organization. Here are three ways they could have made all the difference. 1 elect a representative, some

At least you realize that it's not right to vandalize property, hurt people and burn things while rioting. It reflects badly on the society you're in. Yes, I've seen the videos of riots over hockey games. IMO, that's one of the worst reasons to start such violent riots.
