In June 2023, Tottenham Hotspur made Ange Postecoglou the first Aussie to manage in the Premier League, but he's been doing big things for a LOT longer than that. Who is the man that's had his teams compared to Pep Guardiola's Barcelona, and why did it take so long for him to reach the top?

A fabulous summary of Ange’s formative years, experience and ethos. Just one point, easily overlooked. Ange was injured at 27 and had to stop as a player. He took a while to reflect and even worked for a while in a bank branch. Only then did he resolve, bugger this, it’s coaching or nothing.

Mate, you never referenced Hungary's Ference Puskas - one of the greatest footballers ever who was Ange Postecoglou's mentor and inspiration. Also probably worth noting that Ange's skill is taking underperforming teams and making them play amazing football. Brisbane Roar were a disfunctional home for boozing ex-Socceroos (Australian National Team) before Ange cleaned them out and Roarcelona broke all records. Yokahama F Marinos were constantly in the lower half of the J-League before Ange. Celtic have the biggest budget of any Scottish club but had finished ten points behind Rangers the season before Ange. There will be ups and down for Tottenham before Ange's playing style is fulling integrated, but a little patience will see them do amazingly. Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it.

he came in to celtic, basically brought in a brand new first 11 and got them to win a league title back from a Rangers side that had went invincible the year before and that got to a European final. I don't think many people outside of celtic know just how much of a shambles the squad was when Neil Lennon got the sack, he'd wrecked us. It was embaressing. Ange took us from the worst place we'd been in a decade and gave us the best football we've seen since Martin O'neill. I don't like Spurs but I'll be watching them for Ange, and you're lucky to have him.

He's a phenomenal coach. Totally gutted he left Celtic but after delivering us two years of trophies I couldn't begrudge him leaving. I laughed at some YT 'pundits' who scoffed at his Tottenham appointment. Guaranteed this guy will win trophies for Spurs. And his football is glorious.

We haven't seen anything like Anges Roar in the A league since. Maybe Adelaide in 15-16 under Amor but it was only 1 season. I remember watching the Roar and thinking that team could cut it in Europe haha

Look to be honest Brisbane is such a fickle sporting city that any team winning will sell out and as soon as those results drop nobody is interested in them any more. Look at the QLD Reds in 2011 and 2021, the roar through those years when we were actually good, the lions when that lot are winning, etc.

Good summarisation of Ange & what many don’t understand is Ange was always preparing for the EPL. As he was part of the Man City Group when he was in Japan as Manager of Yokohama Marinos (Man City has a large stake ownership) Man City were preparing Ange as the heir to Pep Guardiola, then with the sacking of Conte Tottenham hired Scott Munn who like Ange was part of the City Group as Chief of Asia operations & with Munn having a strong relationship with Ange having previously worked in the A-League & National Teams Munn clearly encouraged Levy to appoint Ange, so it was all in the pipe works, City Groups loss is Tottenhams gain.

What you politely left out is , if he does well with Spurs . He builds his portfolio to move to city if the need was to arise . Spurs cant win the EPL , but they might just snare something domestic . As an Argentine and spurs fan I wanted Poch to get back to the club. But I'm starting to like Postecoglou. I heard him speak in a conference a few days ago and I liked his personality very much, he seemed very involved in the conversation, unlike most managers who usually just say mostly generic stuff that is expected from them in a conference. He has a different type of personality, very calm and engaged.

Fantastic video, I too, a spurs fan like you knew nothing about Ange, and wanted Nagelsmann at the time. After being at our first home match vs ManU, I am fully invested in Ange’s playing style, and I don’t think there’s anyone better out there for the job of Spurs manager currently. I'm an Aussie and was a big Brisbane Roar fan back during their golden era under Postecoglou. Nothing makes me prouder than to see him finally get the recognition he deserves. I'm a massive Liverpool supporter but will definitely be rooting for Spurs to do well (just not against Liverpool) over the next few years under Big Ange.

Nikola Jokic springs to mind when you talk about a player who "doesn't fit the mould" yet absolutely dominated the league and won a title within his first few years of playing NBA. Long may Ange's reign continue. As an Aussie who's watched him grow, develop and absolutely destroy my home club for years before taking on the footballing world, I'm extremely proud of what he's doing. He's one of quite a few domestic managers here in Australia that are breaking the mould of managers who think outside of the box and create beautiful football styles of play, all whilst having travelled the "road less taken." Hopefully he'll help bring more eyes on our domestic product, for both our players and managers, and eventually, our football code as a whole.

What a fair, well researched and open minded presentation! Thank you. As an Aussie of mixed ancestry, I relate well to the challenges faced by him and his family, migrating to a totally foreign country. Ange's accomplishments go beyond the football field. I love him dearly for his humbleness, combined with his passion for the game to be played his way, support for the underdog, and quick dismissal of undesirables. This is all in pursuit of the common goal of fans, club, players. Go you good thing Ange!

I think a lot of times the rest of the world overlook the fact that while Australia is not a big footballing nation, they are a big coaching nation - Australia has always produces decent coaches in all sorts of sports because of their sporting culture and sports science programs

The issue in this country is the administration of the sport, and the complete lack of funding from govt. Many football fans see A-league as a joke and would rather pay out the ass for subscriptions for the big 5 leagues - yet the socceroos (almost all of which are A-league products) certainly exceeded expectations. Poor management, lack of funding, and decades of AU MSM weaponising the passion that you dont see in other codes to protect their interests in other codes (which are not widely played internationally, do not compete with football in terms of participation - yet the media remains obsessed and the govt will through many times more $$$ at AFL and NRL instead of Football.)

As an Australian Tottenham fan I have a lot of love for this, any real Australian soccer (football) fan knows very well what ange is capable of. He represents exactly what the Australian sport mentality is, this is not to be taken for granted the proof is in Australia having respectable results in any sport we compete in. Regardless of what silver we may or may not win ange will leave a lasting effect on the club and players even if it only last for one season. I have 100% faith in ange he will give Tottenham something very special at the end of it all.

We have our Tottenham back thanks to Ange. Looking forward to every game now whereas under Mourinho and Conte, I often avoided watching games as not to ruin my weekend. With Ange-ball, the style is so pleasing, the results matters less. Even after three league games, I'm confident to say this is the best football we've seen from Spurs since peak Pochettino.

I came to Australia and started my admiration for this man during his Roar years, where when the quality of the squad would allow, it almost looked like they were playing a different sport when compared to the other clubs. Then in his tenure for the Socceroos, he got a below-average generation of players to force Spain and Netherlands to have to give it all to defeat them, and also won the Asian Cup. To be honest, most of the criticism I could hear was from people that had no touch with reality nor understood the sport. What he did with the Socceroos was a MIRACLE, and probably his most impressive job. If you wish to understand it, checkout the Socceroos numbers since he left.

A friend asked me who I wanted to replace Conte when that thing happened and I said Postecoglou purely based on how Australia played under him and how good Celtic looked in the CL against teams you'd think would demolish them. Fun fact: when Ange won Asian Cup 2015 wirh Australia, his side played against Korea. Son, his current Spurs captain, was at that match playing for Korea and scored a goal against Ange's side. Son & Ange have met before; it seems destined for the reunion. What a miraculous world we live in.

43 year-old Celtic supporter here. Got to admit, I'm close to tears watching this. It was an amazing rollercoaster of a couple of trophy laden seasons 🏆🍀 Great to see the ultra-arrogant EPL pundits queuing up to speak to him now. The shift in attitudes of other EPL club's supporters regarding Ange also highlights just how myopic and biased an outlook they have for anything outwith their own league

Australia is a very unique sporting market. Rugby League and Aussie rules take up basically all the elite athletic talent of the country, leaving soccer and a few more amateurish sports to be left for the rest.

3:12 slight correction as an Australian. Football is our most popular sport, but it doesn’t seem like it because we aren’t that good. For example the matildas just broke our national TV viewing record for the semi final against England.

It's one of the most played sports at junior level, but as far as media coverage, sponsorship or government support, it's way behind the pecking order. Especially when compared to league or AFL.

Not even close to the most popular sport in most facets. Yes more juniors play football but in terms of sponsorship, TV viewership, attendance, media coverage etc, AFL is definitely number 1 - and it does not really have international matches. Yeah, we’ll all watch an international game but in terms of A-league bums on seats, it does not compare.

It isn't. The Matildas got a lot of coverage because we were hosting the World Cup. They had more viewership than the Socceroos because the matches were aired at a time more accessible to Australians. What it does show is that given similar media coverage to other sports & if aired at times where the average Australian can watch, football really has the potential to win over the masses. Unfortunately though the sport is underfunded & participation drops off very steeply after youth because of higher fees than other sports.

Ange is a king, not a fan of Tottenham but as an Aussie would love to see them do really well, even as a Manchester United fan I wasn’t too upset when their lot beat us last weekend cos it means Ange will hopefully get more of a shot

I am an American Spurs supporter since 2018 and man has it been difficult. I half-wished that I saw more of Pochettino when he was still around and considered switching clubs multiple times under the cycle of managers we've had after Pochettino. I'm looking forward to the future and appreciated what I've been through with Spurs :p (at least I didn't support Leicester, since I flipped flopped between the two when I was getting into the PL). I also knew that Maddison was a hell of a player way back then too (ever since he transferred to Leicester from Norwich City).
