As sports leagues around the world continue to add in more games and even entire competitions to their schedules, they may also be burning out the athletes that make their product great in the first place. What is burnout, and what can be done to prevent it?

As a Barca fan, the injuries to our young core of Gavi, Fati and Pedri has haunted us and will likely impact our other youngsters, in Fermin, Guiu and Yamal. Yamal I'm especially worried about with the amount of players that can play in his position.

@@flavaj12 His point still stands though. Alexis Sanchez played nonstop football for about 4 years running his arse off while playing through an injury and travelling back and forth between Europe and South America. By the time he'd got to Man United he was already on the decline psychically and was due to turn 30 at the end of the year and you could see he was looking burned out while still scoring and providing assists for us (Arsenal). Alexis Sanchez has even come out on record saying he regretted the United move as soon as he got there but I hear what you're saying about how players go to United for their careers to die.

it is not just sports. other career fields out there as well. I work in the trade and I work about 50-60 hours per week 5-6 days a week. I feel the burnout effect on me. the stress, the tiring body and the long hours get to you physically and mentally, from my point of view the mental stress is harder to cope than the body stress. as the new decades come in, the work hours increase more, and most workers are fed with the "you got to work harder and longer" mindset. Nurses, most trades workers, construction workers and many other fields suffer the effect. Lots of suicide in the male population between the age of 30 to 50s.

Brilliant. You have a new subscriber. Both Arteta and Southgate play Saka in every meaningless game. And he's too polite to say no. I remember Henry playing injured and Petit being publicly pilloried for refusing to play when not fully fit. This isn't new but sadly its getting worse. Its about time the PL had a winter break and reduced the number of teams.

Awesome video bro, I think the football industry does forget that the players are human. Like you mentioned at companies people need goals ect to stay motivated, but in football you just keep playing until you can’t anymore, clubs don’t work on the psychology side with the players to make sure their motivation is peak. And I’m sure a lot of the time they would find with low motivation players is burn out, due to too much game time or too little, as well as the cut throat culture of the industry. Really great video made me think about a lot of things. As a pro player myself I’ve been thru this and seen so many talented players fade out over the years. The industry just puts them to the side saying “they have lost their hunger” and leave it at that. Where as in reality clubs need to put stuff in place to keep track of players motivation and burn out. The fact we see it so much shows something is wrong and innovation is ready to happen in the sport to change it

I mean it makes sense, these clubs don`t care about these players, the league and the clubs only really care about making money, so obviously players will get played too much. only anamolies like Cr7, Messi and LeBron James can play so much and still eb relatively healthy, due to great genetics, diet and training, athlets don`t tend to have the longevity of the likes of Cr7, Messi and LeBron James. it is far more common for players to end their careers quickly due to injuries like what happened with Michael Owen, R9, and the likes of Charles Barkley. Either the injuries tend to massively lower their quality as players or they simply cannot play anymore, Modern medicine has off-set some of this, helping athletes return and recover some of their levels. while Saka is a great athlete, regardless of what type of training you perform the body needs to rest, so while Saka as a genetic freak can off-set some of this, but Saka plays a lot of games, he plays a lot in training wheter for Arsenal or England, along side this Saka likely performs some type of strength training and weight training along with all of the cardio he performs. This puts a ton of pressure on the body.

Great video. This pb really needs to be addressed. Too many players, esp. top ones, are injured. But it doesn't address the physicality of the game. More and more brutal fouls that refs are not addressing. We fans are the ones, in addition to the players, who suffer bc we're deprived of our favourite players. And it can shorten the careers of top players. I don't know why FIFA doesn't do something. I guess it's bc of the money involved.

I'm 32 now and have played on average 6 games of futsal a week for those 10 years and have started to lose that immeasurable fire in the belly to compete. To give it some perspective only 2 years ago I couldn't get enough of it and at times would play 8-10 games a week. It's hard to say for sure though since I lost my grandma 6 months ago who was like a 2nd mum to me I lived with her my whole life

I’ve seen injured players argue with the manager about getting subbed off. Athletes don’t always think rationally, their competitive nature sometimes blinds them, they don’t always know what’s best for them that’s what a good manager is for. But managers don’t really have a say in the hectic play schedule, they can only help the best they can and hope for the best

Hes burnt out at the end of the last couple seasons now, most of the first team has that's why last season they kept blowing leads or players would "go missing" Saka was non existent towards the end of last season yet Arteta was going to do anything to force him on the field. I'm not even an arsenal fan but I can see that if Saka ends up getting fatigued towards the end of the season again it'll be the same story. Everything good at arsenal comes via him because Ødegaard goes missing when it matters most. I also feel like its one of the reasons. Not ever player can do what ronaldo did most seasons at Madrid where they all seemed to push even harder towards the end of the season and won 3 champions leagues in a row. At the current rate in England most top teams play around 50/60 games at least a season and Arsenal don't really have good first team replacements so they end up heavily relying on Saka and others whereas Liverpool have decent replacements Man City pretty much have like for like replacements and players who can play multiple positions they don't even really need a striker tbh but Håland is still exactly what they need. Newcastle have struggled this season because of their lack of replacements for their first team of players who are ready for the level. It's good that you mentioned Pedri because he's been a perfect example of of what happens when you don't allow players to rest and so his body is suffering now after playing the most matches of anyone his age a couple seasons ago

Bruh it's ridiculous. Clubs are now at the point where they are playing 3 games a week. 2 league games on weekends, and either one cup game or European game in the week, OR even during the November/December period 3 league games a week.. Adding on to that there's also international tournaments that fifa try and squeeze in between everything... Not all clubs have the money to buy big squads to compete in all competitions. So I find it unfair on managers too. Because if they play a B team when A team players are burnt out, they get criticized too if the B team loses, or if he plays an A team and one of those players get injured, he also gets criticized. It's a lose lose situation. Many fans might hate the idea but I think football seasons need to be rescheduled longer for teams who regularly play 3 games a week. The amount of clubs with more and more injuries each season is ridiculous. It's ruining players careers. People and the club owners just forget they are only human. I know it would complicate things, but it would seriously be a good idea to add a couple more months to each season so that all matches are only played on weekends. I dunno, what do you think?

I've always wondered why NFL teams will draft highly productive college Quarterbacks that get labeled as "system Quarterbacks" then intentionally not change their system to suit that QB's skillset. You're picking a guy to (presumptively) be the face, and future of your franchise, and staking the chance of you winning (and profiting even more), to somebody that you won't even give every opportunity to be the best they can be. . .

I dont know about other sports but football could use like a max minute per season a player can play across the entire season or x hours of rest after a game. You can’t just take one player experience ( I am talking about Ronny)and conclude that to be the reality for everyone. Players this days play more game but have top tier science, chef, physio and all the monitoring that would help them extended there career. Some players follow the science and do the right thing aka Ronaldo hence his longevity. Whereas other players just drink away there early 20s and not respect science as much aka Roony and this players will not succeed longer than 10 years.

i agree, you have to treat yourself like top athlete to survive long in any sport. Burnouts happen if you don't take care of yourself properly. However, i do understand the mental load it must create to play multiple times a week, the physical is obvious if you have experience in any form of strenuous exercise. It would be very tempting for anyone to make that amount of money every week and not let go in form of partying. The lifestyle attracts so many bad habits and vices. Just look at alot of brazilian players who went through extreme poverty and then stardom. I respect everyone who can go through that like a true professional, a person who is always trying to create a balance of fine tuning their body for their specific sport and finding ways to mitigate the outside/inside stress the comes along with it. Its not easy to maintain a consistent form every week, but its just not possible without very hard work. There are levels to this shit. Some people are blessed with talent and just rely on that, some people are blessed with discipline. Both will take you to the top, but the latter will help to keep you there.

These sports have milestones and thresholds for reasons. Idgaf the age of the person who made this video, they’re dumb af for even trying to get an audience behind this. Some of yall are just so weak it’s wild. Before some of yall get upset with me for voicing MY OWN OPINION, keep in mind with the part I said “thresholds” and “milestones” are set for a reason. Well when you change sports drastically, you’re almost slapping ALL the people who played before for a various amount of reasons. I’m not saying we shouldn’t evolve sports because I’m a big advocate for the idea that the skill in said sports gets better every year, but we shouldn’t be devolving the players in said sports. That’s what this videos main point is. I’d honestly take this down if I’m the creator, but at the same time I imagine this helps give his channel some buzz.

It’s also fans like this who are a threat to the future of sports 😂

What exactly is the bare minimum? Cause it seems no one knows which is kinda the point. FIFA has a different concept of what players can handle and so do the clubs and national teams. It also differs a lot based on players cause humans are not machines printed in a factory. What would be nice is to set a limit on how many minutes a footballer can train/play. And that should be set by an independent body thats actually done a bunch of tests to best estimate what the bare minimum is. I’m also for paying top players less and transferring those savings to the fans and I think you can get the players to agree to those terms If you prioritize their well being.

idk I miss the days of 2 teams having both of their strongest XI's on the pitch, now the injuries from overuse mean big matches are missing key players every time

@@bluefalcon55000 To be fair injuries were always part of the game but they seem more frequent now fasho. Probably cause the game is so much more physical, I watched a Chelsea v United game from 2001 a few days ago and the amount of space players had to move with the ball and then shoot was insane.

You don't seem to understand that these players are human with limitations. The money doesn't come into it. They can't play more than what they can do. Why are there so many injuries?
