Studio 5000 XIC XIO and OTE Bit Instructions Controllogix Compactlogix

We're going to explain to you how the XIC Examine On, XIO Examine Off, and OTE Output Energize bit instructions work. These basic bit instructions are the most common ladder logic instructions you will run into in Studio 5000 when working with the Allen Bradley Controllogix and Compactlogix PLC. By the end of this video, you should no longer think of an Examine on instruction as a normally open contact, an Examine Off instruction as a normally closed contact, or an Output Energize as a relay coil. These are ladder logic instructions, NOT relay components.

"Go look for a 0." OMG why didn't I hear that years ago. The usual "Examine If Open" just never clicked for me. I didn't understand how the XIO was highlighted with the "Normally Closed" relay contact looking drawing and if that was rung was true or not. Thanks for the Insight! Go look for a 0. Very clear.

It surprised me the first time I heard it too! I struggled for years trying to keep track of when to use an XIC vs an XIO. Glad I could pass it on to you!

Tim - Great video, one thing that keeps tripping me all the time is PLC tags with XIC and XIO instructions. There is no physical IO associated with it. Can you please explain the Tags within the PLC with these instructions? I would appreciate your help.

There can be physical I/O associated with them. Local:1:I.Data.0 is an input, Local:1:O.Data.0 is an output.

Question: I’m brand new to PLC and control engineering so this is very helpful. The physical trainer kits are very expensive so am unable to order one. Is there a way to perform training on software only? Basically what is the best way to train with this stuff without having a PLC at hand.

Start with this course. You can get through a decent amount with the free software and simulator

@@TimWilborne if I have a 50 percent sensor sealed in by a 100 percent sensor is that considered “AND Gate” where you need 2 xio’s for the output to energize
