In this video I mix the same song with 5 different studio monitors. These are some of the best studio monitors for music production including the Genelec 8030, Adam A7x, Neumann KH 120, Focal Shape 50, and the Output Frontier. I started the mix from the same exact point with each of the speakers, and then mixed according to what sounded good to me. I did not test the mix on consumer speakers or headphones and then mix again. If you’re looking for the top studio monitors for under $1000, you should consider these. In my studio, on Kali IN-8 2nd Wave with my WS-12. All speakers calibrated with Sonarworks SoundID. My favorite mix was B. It was the most natural to me. It might be a little “boring”/flat. But that mix the most balanced for me.

I think that the Genelecs and Neumanns were the best - actually, throw the Adams in there too, but I felt like the mix you did on them didn't feel very "glued" together, as if there were some hollow spots in it. Didn't sound as welcoming as the other ones. Meanwhile, D and E were a no from me, respectively too nasal and tinny.

I always wondered if the type of monitors matters that much when you put a correction curve on your output. Like f.e. i run sonarworks sound id on my Yamaha HS8 and they sound 'clean' / neutral and flat in my room (mostly treated but improveable). Like how much difference is noticeable when i get let's say the Adam A7X and measure the speakers according to my room with sonarworks sound ID and get a flat response again. In both cases both monitors sound clean and flat in my room and therefore similar??? Maybe the same? So again my question is: do monitor types really matter when using them with response correction softwares? Does anybody know something i might miss here?

A and C. I wasn't surprised at the reveal. Genelecs are a bit harsh so mixing with them will make you smooth it out. I like the Neumann mix the best because it was a little brighter. I usually bounce back and forth between monitors to check so I can get bass, atmosphere, and treble right. The Adams and Focals kind of make everything sound a little bit too good for me. The drivers are performing so well that you can listen things that consumer speakers can't handle without producing artifacts. I always test with flawed material when I am purchasing. I used to request jacked up sounding examples of the store employees work to test as well as my most poorly mixed song drafts to test.

Being behind a mixing board since 1975 - seen a lot of change and innovation, but what remains the same is music. Interesting comparison video and I listened to the comps more than once. Like the song you demo'd and now it's stuck in my brain. I would never decide on monitors unless auditioning music I've produced. Each monitor have their own merits. Regarding the song you used, here are my choices: B (Adams), C (Nuemann) and E (Frontier) which was a surprise. I'm trying to find a 2 way system that spreads instruments out on the sound-stage best. Any plans to demo 3 way monitors? Thanks.

Thank you for this comparison! Tip for future video(s): I think it would do the community a world of good if you could do a self-noise comparison between 8030c and kh120 (and others if possible) if you still have access to all of these monitors. Nearfield listening on 8030c is very annoying as there is an extremely audible hiss. Some forums suggest the Neumanns are inaudible.

Hi, I am looking for a bit of advice. I am an aspiring dance music producer and I am planning on improving my production this year and taking it all a bit more seriously and potentially making it into a living. My current monitor is set up as follows. I have a set of Rokit 5 Rpg3 and a Focusrite 2i2. I am currently in the market for a better / second set of monitors for another reference, however, I am and not sure what to get. This is what I am looking to achieve in my studio. I want to be able to switch between 2 sets of monitors, dim the volume, mute the volume and also switch between stereo and mono and alos switch between headphones. Also, I would like the new set of monitors to complement the frequency of my rockits I currently have, as in, when I flick between the 2 sets of monitors they don't sound much the same, but rather have different curses on the spectrum, etc for mixing like a car/iPhone/studio/club, etc I have a DJ setup that I would like to channel through the same 2 sets of speakers which I am currently doing by using 1/4 jacks through the line inputs on the Focusrite 2i2. I also have a Rode NT1 but I don't use it much only when recording other Artists as I don't sing myself. My budget is about €500. And I am currently considering the following: Option 1 Keeping my current set up and buying 2 x Yamaha HS 7 or Yamaha HS 7 MP (Not sure of the difference) Mackie Big Knob Passive Option 2 Selling my Focusrite 2i2 Mackie Big Knob Studio 2 x Yamaha HS 7 or Yamaha HS 7 MP (Not sure of the difference) Option 3 Either one of the interface options above but changing the monitors to 2 x Adam T7V or similar? Thanks and looking forward to hearing what you guys think.

From my perspective, I use room correction and it works for me. Each brand of studio monitors will sound different depending on the material and technology used to manufacture them. The only thing room correction does is to help flatten the frequency response as much as possible, but you still get the characteristics and tonality from the studio monitors due to their construction.

Those mixes are too different from each other on my monitors. I thought studio monitors are flat, meant to be flat across the frequency spectrum except the bass (because of woofer size limitations) but the difference is insane, could be the difference of your demo track being selected or rejected. B is my favorite btw, followed by A and C

studio monitors are just a sales gimmick. They make money because they look like NS10 size. small speakers are really for long hours, at low volume, not for “flat studio monitoring”.. that’s what the mains are for, which used to be dialed with Amps and crossovers and 31 band for flawless extreme SPL and freq response 20-20k. The industry follows the money, so we are stuck trying to turn a smart phone into a cinema wide screen
@FelixLanzalaco
@FelixLanzalaco 11 ай бұрын
@@EffimRadio one can get flat monitoring on small speakers. I think what you are getting at is mix detail and distortion elimination which big high quality systems are far better for, at least if the music is complex and/or has natural instruments. The industry caters to volume sales for small speakers where simple home EDM/Rap etc production, and electronic sounds can survive that mix process. But not for tonally and timbrally challenging music... have genelec 1030a for close monitors but for the big mix I need a rack with the EQ, Digital crossovers feeding high quality multichannel amps and high quality drivers in 4 way speakers. Unfortunately this is not cheap, unless you can build your own system with used parts.. then studio level 4 way monitoring is gonna be £10,000 upwards

After listening at my desk on Eris 8" and Sub monitors, I picked B although the bass on D felt good on the sub ; ) Speakers B gave the most clarity at both the high and low end IMO. 8030c has the nicest foundation to me. It's a little soft but could be mastered brighter. KH120 was also nice but the bottom end came out a bit 'bloomy'. Listening on ATCs. Obviously a lot has to do with the room and relative placement, which mix was done first, etc.

ok mr sanjay, before the video starts, i am listening to a pair of DCM time windows (2x6" transmission line column response to 30hz) and a pair of mission 6" book shelves which have INSANE midrange presence. running from a vintage pioneer receiver. i'm saying this because i believe i have a pretty accurate system, and i'll use my focusrite interface output vs the PC line out. ok, let's rock. ok A was nice sounding. B a harsh edge to the highs. i easily guessed that was a ribbon tweeter. i'm a soft dome guy. c was pretty clean and tight D was louder and looser. E sounded the tightest and most balanced. I liked E and A, C. in conclusion, easy to hear speaker D's sloppy passive bass radiator and speaker B's harsh metal tweeter. i would be good with any of the other 3. I kind of like the detail in C and also E seems very neutral and clean. that was fun.

That focal shape mix sounds problematic. The Adam a little too. Genelec I'd put at number one but being a Genelec fan, I could see the Neumann being better if I was used to that sound. With a larger model and GLM room correction I think you'd be amazed.

I think I like B, D & E. The thing is, I'm appreciating the different nuances each is picking up. And, I could see liking different ones, to work on different projects. I would have to re-listen, several more times, to pick my universal. If I were auditioning them, at home, I think I'd either use nature sounds, or Paul Young's "Come Back and Stay," to meter how they interpret range and complexity. I'm curious as to whether you think that the fact that a tone-corrector is engaged affects the trueness of the speakers' sounds, or creates any additional effects not intended. Hmmm....

Mixes B, D and E i thought had more detail coming through... With D, am i just lovin' the loudness, (which you advise against), or it's got more clarity 'for reals', so to speak?

Great video and a catchy song! Not meaning to be negative after all the effort you've gone to but I don't see how this is really a good way for someone to choose which monitors are the best for them, or a balanced test. You could probably have mixed that song differently on the same set of speakers five different ways and ended up with similar results as you did here - depending on what "mood" you were in or how tired or alert you were at the time and how long you'd been listening/mixing to the same track etc. I think also that most people who have less than perfect sounding rooms will probably use some kind of room correction software these days like Sonarworks and so the sound differences from monitor to monitor change from what they are straight out of the box and the differences between different makes and models after correction become less dramatic than in this scenario. (Don't mean to bitch - just my two cents)

Aside from the fact that KZfaq is hardly a good way to evaluate audio quality the only mix that sounded noticeable different to me was mix D. The others sound about the same, which is a good thing as far as I'm concerned. You really don't want a monitor that sounds very different from others in the class. I listened to this video on a mid-market AV system (Polk TSi300 tower speakers, Polk Signature series S35 center channel and a Yamaha 8" powered sub). In my studio I recently acquired a 2.1 system consisting of an Adam Audio Sub10 and a pair of Adam A7Xs. I am very pleased with this system. Since setting it up I've spent hours just listening to CD albums, something I haven't done previously for years. Today I listened to albums such as Prokofiev's Cinderella Suite, Dave Alvin, Huey Lewis and the News, the soundtrack to "Life Is Beautiful" by Nicola Piovani and Juno Reactor. I've got the sub level dialed in so that orchestral music is appropriately balanced and EDM rattles your bones, as it should.

now thats a smart way to do it :D we all have our own listening system me headphones I had for 10y now so I know how they sound vs my current monitors and a blind test mix will tell me more than a bad mic recording, I was between A and B, D sounded frankly atrocious ultra harsh I'm used to vinyl sound and I really don't like modern mixes that sound like they forgot mids and lows exist edit : ah ! not surprised by the focals I had Focal car speakers and subwoofer and to be honest I always tought they sounded "aggressive" it's funny that it made for a harsh mix too I would have tought you'd have mixed softer to compensate but no

You definitely should have set the DIP switches on the Genelecs - in fact, all of the monitors should have had basic tweaks consistent with their instruction manuals for a given room type. Good comparison, though, and content creation for this kind of very imperfect method was top-notch.

B was my favorite, and turned out to be the Adam's which I'm looking into exchanging my jbl 305s for anyway. So that was cool. Disappointed with the Outputs because they're a beautiful speaker and I like outputs stuff, but I felt like that mix had no life to it. They're probably GREAT speakers for listening.. more than mixing. Thanks for the video!
