I have caught up with you again after last seeing you and the band a few years ago in Manchester. This is Peter of "Peter & Ben", (My son was in a wheelchair). I am currently looking at some new monitors for my small studio and the Yamaha HS7's and 8's are on my shortlist. Thank you so much for this video comparison. We hope to see Cyhra again in the near future.

Great vid. I’ve been using Yorkville YM-1 for the last 30 years. Similar to your Yamaha’s. I power them with a Crown 100w power amp because they are not powered monitors. I’ve changed a lot of gear over the years but not those, there great. Never had them calibrated, would love to. I believe back in the day they were Tannoy’s answer to Yamaha and Yorkville made them for Tannoy. You made a great choice. I think the wooden enclosure adds “warmth” as well. New track sounds wicked.. Rock on🤘🏻Keep the faith...

I actually found the passive YSM1s I used as the closest to NS10's TBH. They both sounded pretty "bad" and had the same crunchy mids but when you arm wrestled a mix on them, it usually translated pretty well.

Great choice, Euge. Very good speakers, especially for the price, that hold well compared to some of the more premium models out there. A7Xs can also cause a bit of year fatigue after long periods of listening to them. Dynaudio BM5 MKIII would have been another great option. Anyway congrats for the new speakers and may them serve you long and well!

I mixed with the A7X from 2014-2016 and i had minimal ear fatigue that prompted me to try the HS8 and I have mixed with the them now for 6 years (often paired with the HS8S sub) and also have a pair as my computer speakers at home and a pair as my TV speakers with the HS8S sub and i've never experienced any kind of ear fatique with then. It propably depends on the room and the person but the Yamaha's solved my problem. If i get something high end in the future i'll propably still keep a pair of these next to them.

Yes even with the room audio I could hear better separation of the elements on the Yamaha mix. I’ve been rocking Yamaha HS50s (predecessor to the HS5) with a HS10 sub since 2009. Still very happy with them. Monitors are often down to personal taste, and the most important thing is being familiar with them and knowing them inside-out. Kudos for not being a gear snob. My favourite overdrive pedal is also not on any “all time top 10” lists, but I love it, and it sounds awesome.👍

@@christelhall9379 Room is 5.5m x 3.8m (Height 2.55m). This room is so packed with gear there's no space for treatment =). All the "stuff" breaks up the reflective energy so at least there's that. Treatment is very important tho. You don't want to place these close to walls since they have rear reflex ports. You should look up ideal speaker placement in rooms and calculate from there. Depends how wide apart they are, what you are putting in between them. I do check my mixes with headphones.

Euge, this is great explanation, I used Yamaha NS10's in 90's, burn them twice so I bought Mackie 824 that I still use just because I know them for so many years and they still work. A few years ago I added Genelecs 8010A that I really love for many things but I still check the mixes on Macbook or Iphones speakers as most of the people listen to the music on these devices these days. I like them a lot and the customers too 😎. With the Sonarworks software and room calibration thing they’re pretty much dead flat across the full range from 20K down to 40hz and then there’s a bit of unflatness below 35 hz but very little 👌. It’s obviously about personal preferences and what you’re used to but I’m very comfortable / confident with them and I’ve even stopped checking my mixes in a car 😎.

The problem with adam speakers is, everything sounds good on it. If your mix sounds good on yamaha speakers, it sounds good everywhere. Because the yamaha has that mid pronounce and that crispy transient attack that we need to mix, and to get the mix out of our ears. HS series has not the same sound of NS10 but inspired on them, that "nasal" mids that tells you when you're in the wrong direction.

Have to disagree 100% I have, Adam a7x, Hs8, B2031A and ns10 which are old I have to say Adams represent a true perspective of what ur sound really is and when it doesn't sound good it doesn't, also the frequency response is much more flatter compare to hs8, ns10's do represent mid and high fq really well but they definitely lack on low frequency, A7xs are fantastic

I used to reference in NS-10, but when I bought the Adam a7x I sold the NS-10 because they became useless, they are more like “the standard” but naaah, maybe you need to work in your acoustics, Adam a7x are perfect for the value and if you can afford a sub you have everything you need.

@mookytc
@mookytc 2 жыл бұрын
That is the first thought I had (oh no the Genelecs). I have never gotten comfortable with my guitar tune via studio monitors and have had - sold some good ones. Not sure why must be my old ears (or lack of proper room treatment - calibration). Use my Kemper through a Kabinet - Kone, traditional guitar cab, or headphones. Tube amps via a cab of course (sometimes head phones via reactive load - audio device). DAW plugins via audio device - headphones. Thinking I am missing something with dialing in the monitor tone. Many use monitors with great success. Great vid Euge keep them coming!
@EugeValovirta230V
@EugeValovirta230V 2 жыл бұрын
The flatter the monitors (Sonarworks calibration 👌) the easier it is to hear how things actually sound. I never dial the amps when recording by being in front of cab. Don’t make much sense to me since the microphones mic’in the cab ”hear” (and record) the sound differently than my ears (well my ears can’t record anything 😁) so I always dial everything with monitors since that will be the sound that will be recorded and what people will hear when they listen the recording 😎.

My experience and 2db re ADAM A7Xs? When I used to work in a room with NS10's, a guy brought a pr of A7Xs in. NS10's being very very mid-centric have always been great for dialing in guitars and I thought the A7Xs with their ribbon tweeter design really work fantastic on guitars as well. I also used 8020s for 3 years in the mobile rig we had and while as you said, they are really great (we had 8040s in the room) they're very good for such a small pkg but the A7Xs are a little easier to work with I think. But, just my 2db as I said!

Great video my friend. Cool 😎 accent you have btw. I use ADAM AUDIO monitors at the moment. A few years ago, it was time for me to upgrade from my then too small Mackie monitors. I’ve decide to buy the T7V. They’re awesome budget monitors. The T8V have too much low frequency energy and the small T5V cannot go low enough. In my honest opinion, if we only look at the 3 T series, the T7V I’ve been using for a while are the most balanced of these 3 entry level monitors. Although the crossover is at 2.6 kHz, the 7 inch woofer doesn’t overwhelm the midrange frequencies like the bass heavy T8V do. Yamaha HS models are also great monitors. The midrange is lovely. For anyone who reads this comment; what studio monitors do you use?
@EugeValovirta230V

Thanks man! Yeah it’s the Finnish one 🤟. IMO the price is entry level but the quality is top notch pro. At least IMO 😎. I’ve been a professional musician, producer, engineer etc. for quite a long time and have used 10 times more expensive monitors but I like these a lot and they’re my main ones. Obviously it’s a matter of personal preferences but these works just great in my studio. And I got the matching Yamaha sub a while ago and oh boy now I can really hear the low end which is quite important especially when mastering 👌.

HS8's perform far beyond their price point. There's a reason why the cheap NS10 became such a legend, and that has carried over to the modern iterations. I've opted for HS8's when they first came out as an upgrade to Dynaudio BM5's. They are great. Not fancy frills or nonsense, just clear tone. They are not tiring after listening for extended periods. I am also using a pair of Adam A5X's as a secondary pair to 'A/B' but the Yamahas are the ones i use 90% of the time.

Cool great job! I bought the Adam A7X because to me they have more clear depth, almost 3d sound with seperation. The Yamaha's are cool too, tone eq etc, but I dont hear the clarity like the A7x's I have a small room though, so the slightly smaller speaker I think works better for me also..

In my opinion, the number one mistake most people make is to interpret the supposedly less present mids as a weakness of the Adams compared to the Yamaha for example. In fact, the opposite is true because the Adams are just much more transparent in reproducing the high and lowends. However, you will hear the difference at last if you do the same mix on different monitors and compare the results on a neutral source!

I liked the Yamaha Monitors the best. Good choice. 👍 They sounded the most balanced, natural, and open. With the other monitors, there was too much bass, and it sounded like the frequencies were piled one upon the other, and the result was a lack of clarity and openness. Hey man, what’s up? Very interesting video with an interesting choice you made I am also choosing between exactly these three speakers. Question that bothers me-what about casual music listening? People say that Yamahas are bad for it and that they will be boring, if you want to get some satisfaction from bassy, punchy moments. Like, that you will hear bass of course (they are 8 inch), but that you won’t get your “high” from that, so to speak. That they are purely for mixing. And that Adams with those tweeters are of course better for it. While last sentence is most likely true, since everything sounds cool on adams, what about Yamahas though? I will actually probably mostly listen to music on them. I will also play guitar through my fractal axe fx. But i really really love music listening. I love bassy, low frequency breakdowns/distorted guitars like from metallica, Meshuggah. I also like Pink Floyd and stuff, i like colorful songs. I like warmth coming from music. So i don’t know what to do If they are so boring, then i might not take them because of that. I am mostly hi fi music lover. I am not a mixer yet. But i will become one in the future, that’s my goal, i want to produce music. What do you think? (Edit) btw i don’t have money on a subwoofer

Thanks! I haven’t found them boring at all. I’ve always just listened to music with the same speakers as I mix & master ’cos it’s important to know your speakers. What is a good speaker? The ones you know and are familiar with. And with the Sonarworks SoundID Reference system my speakers are really flat and calibrated to my room so I can hear exactly what I’m doing and when just listening I hear exactly how a mixing & mastering engineer wanted the song to sound. I don’t like if the music is coloured by the speakers ’cos then the music isn’t sounding the way it was intended (by the artists, mixing engineer, producer etc,). If a song sounds boring then it’s not the speaker’s fault but the production’s 😎🤟.

HS 5 is actually the best Yamaha monitor with best mid pair it with sub. Adam A7X sounds more like I want to hear it when I mix but it needs a sub to. HS 8 requires good room and that you place it a bit from the wall but it sounds very embarrassing sometimes your sound card can affect the sound more than you think. My voice goes to Adam A7X with sub complement with a mono mixcube and you have it all. Have never heard of anyone switching from Adam A7X to Yamaha HS 8 however from HS 8 to Adam more commonly. I think many people want the HS 8 to be better because it costs less, think about it, but try it in your own room. Should add that you can miss sub with HS 8 to.

I think you need to revisit your room treatment, as that 107Hz spike is on every sonar works correction, you are constantly describing a blurgh sound for bass as soon as there's any kind of loud bass frequencies present, and I can hear a reverberation down low every time you speak or play music on any speaker being picked up via the mic (unless sonar works is playing whak-a-mole with your bass, as then I just hear barely any bass at all). You need some better/different bass traps as ~100Hz is clearly an issue in your room. That foam isn't designed to stop low frequencies (even though sometimes it's sold as a bass trap, it's not at all) and the bass is probably bouncing around most of your room freely building up, and it sounds like it from the recording too. The bare brick walls in between the treatment probably aren't helping either. More thick curtains all the way round is a cheap way to fix the brick issue. This is also causing that dip just below 100Hz, as the size of your room, mixed with the bouncing bass is creating a null at that 80hzish frequency at your listening spot as a result (as well as that room mode or doubling effect or what ever is going on at just above 100Hz). This is probably why any time you hear low frequencies they sound bloated as you describe, as they are heavily skewed by your room to be 100hz heavy and light in the deeper 80Hz area, and again boosted at around 60, but not as much as 100Hz, sonar works can only do so much to fix this, and it will still heavily effect your mixing decisions, even if you don't realize it at the time (and you can still see in sonar works, it can't fully correct for it). A song might need/want a lot of bass to really sound good, but it will never sound good any time you do anything down there due to the room reflections, so the only answer, without changing anything in the room, is to cut the balls off your mix by toning down the bass so it doesn't set off your listening environment's reverberations. My old small room used to have the exact same problem, it sucks IK. ;)

@@EugeValovirta230V They are a beautiful pair of speakers man, congratulations! I can see I was replying to an old video, and you already have beefed up your acoustic treatment.
