Hi, I love your videos. Ken, do you keep the online UPS in a separate room? How's the faint noise, hum, and buzz on a unit like this? Is it louder or about the same as a desktop computer? Also, when I have my components (computer, speakers, monitors, etc.) turned off, is it safe for me to turn off the UPS, so the fan does not have to be on 24/7? Will the online UPS recall my numeric settings on the unit when I turn it back on? Thanks in advance, and thanks for this video

I am working on a live room that I’ll do some amateur mixing in. I was going to have several outlets around my room on a separate circuit, but if I want to use one of these UPS systems where I put one near my consul, and then another one or two in the opposite corners of the room for guitar amplifiers? They won’t create any noise? Put it in the wall? Just brainstorming now thanks for any feedback

Thank you hostnik, your comment just put a huge smile on my face my friend...cause I think you get it!!! These true online ups's will make literally EVERYTHING you do sound better...in a BiG way ;-) They can be very pricy pending on your needs. I suggest adding up all the watt ratings on the gear you would have online (I personally leave all my amplifiers off the ups...they surge big power at start up and really aren't considered 'critical' so to speak). I have a ton of gear plugged into my current system and it's only rated at 1000kVA My next current model choice will be the Sola S4K2U2000-C I know it will be in service for at least 10 years, so the $2200 tag is a bit easier to stomach at $220/yr It's a tough one cause we have so much gear to consider with limited budgets, but I promise the online ups will put a big smile on your face...not to mention everything you do connect to it will function flawlessly for as many decades ;-)) So happy you found this session hostnik, cheers to you ;-) -hw

Speaking of power - had a stupid noob error recently; recently got into using guitar pedals actually on a guitar instead of synth, and plugged in a few that weren't working. I thought the batteries were dead so I used my 1-spot daisy chain with correct v and polarity, and that didn't work either. Being an idiot, I experimented with things, ended up reversing the polarity, and thought I blew them out. Was bummed for a day or so because I hadn't even gotten to play one of them at all yet. Then I realized - since my Kmix needs balanced cables to keep levels up, I just always used TRS by default, and I wondered if that was the problem. A quick Google and I'm like... uhg, dumbass - the TRS grounds out the battery circuit on these pedals, so you have to use unbalanced cables! Good news is, I hadn't actually blown out the pedals at all, just my ego. ;D

Hey man, so I followed your advice and got myself an online ups as suggested. But, man, the level of noise is insane, almost 60dbs. How do you go around that? I am almost thinking on sending it back, it's driving me nuts (and it is in the next room). Thanks!

Do you mean that you get noise in your audio or the ups make some noise?
@kaislate
@kaislate 2 жыл бұрын
Yes power "conditioners" can introduce noise. Also chances are it may be a ground loop. If the unit itself is buzzing see if turning on different lights on the same circuit changes this. This is pretty normal for UPS units to do this. Some have management software where you can lessen this effect. You can also get an isolator or unplug any PC component that is on the same line. PC power supplies are pretty bad and offer no protection against the 60Hz hum. Run PC from battery or a different circuit.
@KevboKev

@@KevboKev at the high end with multi $1000 units for home theater probably, but the ones you can buy at best buy it can go either way. You can set how quickly it switches and under what states cause a switch to battery in settings of decent units. Having the fastest switching with the tightest bracket will wear out the battery quicker l, but will offer the most protection. As for the hum... You are probably going to need to trial and error a bunch of solutions. USB is a big culprit, start there... Then other things on the circuit, and finally the hardware in line you are using.

@hiwattmarshall 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking DigitalMiVa! I’m planning to upgrade my original Online UPS with same brand, Sola Hevi-Duty. The specific model I’m looking at is S4K2U1000C. I’ve designed my studio power into two systems, one that includes all amplifiers and self-powered monitors, and the other for everything else. Amplifiers probably use 80% of the power you’re consuming in your studio and they really don’t need the same level of protection as your DAW, hard drives and audio interface, so I recommend leaving them off your UPS. These systems get crazy expensive as you increase VA ratings so I recommend minimizing your needs by excluding amplifiers ;-) When I do loose power (just happened last week), my speakers all shut down (no big deal), and I have a very relaxed 20 minutes or so under battery power to save my work, shut down and safely power down my whole studio!

Think of them like a server…best located in a remote location. I have mine two rooms away, with the output hard wired to mains on my studio floor (done to code by electrician 👍🏻). I promise you this will be one of your best long term studio investments, because everything you do simply sounds better…and your gear will return the love with years of maintenance free service.
