Francis Buckley. Grammy winning Audio Engineer. All round great guy. Project studio fairy godmother?
In Studio Rescue we join Francis as he visits a range of home studios and combines the fundamentals of acoustic science with a few hard-earned industry secrets to get the most out of the available space.
This time around Francis drops in on James Hunt who has a typical project studio set up in his bedroom. With plenty of equipment he's having problems getting the right sound and has asked Francis to lend a helping hand.

Ouch, sound waves don't "develop". Let's put this to rest already. Standing speakers on speakers is not a good idea. You will get sound from the speaker that isn't turned on because of sympathetic vibrations.

I am always envious of these youngsters with Pro Tools rigs in their bedrooms. I mean, now, I have an HD3 rig and a C24, Neumann mics and outboard analog heaven, but that is after about 20 years. At these kids age I had a Tascam PortaStudio 4 track cassete deck. That was the home studio of the day. I dont think they know how good they have it:)

9:20 That's not a vocal booth. That's just a piece of foam on the least sensitive side of your microphone. Thus letting in all of the room noise from the front, below and above. It does prevent the natural voice sound waves hitting the wall behind it, but don't think you're there in creating a silent recording space just using a curved piece of foam! The foam should be positioned behind your head, not behind the microphone. Tip 2: often a large diaphragm condenser mic could maybe not the best option for recording in a non-quiet space. Consider a decent shotgun, especially when doing voice-overs.

@SpeedFreakNO Francis says that the panels on the back wall are placed so they catch waves coming directly from the speakers. He usually starts with the area in the center of the wall and see how that works. Again don't use too much, start with 1 or 2 panels and see how that sounds. Every room is different. You could also try some kind of diffuser to not absorb the wave but break it up so it doesn't bounce right back at you.

That's easy actually. First reflection is any hard surface directly to the left and right of the listener. You can use a mirror to find it. Sit down where your listening position is. Have an assistent move a hand mirror along the wall to the left or right of you and when you can see the speaker in the mirror tell them to stop and put a panel there. That gets you 80% there. Next panel behind your speakers at wall in between and to rear of them. Add bass traps in corner to taste and you're done.

Great idea and good advice. My only suggestion would be to use some REAL acoustic panels. The Auralex type foam is minimally helpful in my experience and the corner wedge "bass traps" are really useless as bass traps. That has been my experience. Using some OC703 or 705 Rigid fiberglass is superior for sound dampening and absorption. If you really want to improve your room, you would consider using something along those lines. I really hope this does not come off as negative, that was not my intent. I just wanted to share my real-life experiences with room treatment.
@YHRS
@YHRS 8 жыл бұрын
You've got that right! Once I saw the foam panels go up, I thought "oh no!" Gotta get some thick, dense material in there to actually do some good on the mid and low frequencies. Foam just isn't gonna cut it. And in that small of a room, they'd basically have to fill it with traps to even put a dent in the low end reflections.

Last I checked the drum set is one of the most important parts of putting together and recording a song. Take the keyboard out, be a man and bang on the drums! The keyboard would have fit in his closet and would have been a lot easier to put up and take down unlike the drum set.
