Those Tokais are definitely not junk; I owned a late 70s Hard Puncher that would have put Fenders from the same era to shame. The 70s and 80s Tokais are very desirable, and are well up there with Fenders in my opinion.

This is what guitar junkies want to see on youtube. No designer dirt and rust on this restoration. Good score, and good restoration. It was like a V8 sleeper under the hood. All quality components. I'll bet they're all original components. This looks 70's or 80's. Solid body with original unmolested single coil pickup routings. Very desirable. I'll bet everybody watching was impressed, and a little nervous you might sand it, which generally ruins them. A bit of wear on some frets, but probably could be re crowned. Good work.

I would have expected that the frets would need levelling and re-crowning but it is impressive that you managed to get that paint off and reveal the original finish. It looked like some emulsion that was left over from doing up a kitchen or something. I was a bit suprised about the value of the pots being at 250k. I thought Fender used 500k in their guitars, but that could well have just been what Tokai used instead.

That guitar is far from "junk". Between the lawsuit era headstock, The large bridge block, lacquer paint, a proper 50s-60's Fender route and so many other details they were fantastic players, sounded as good as any Fender of the time, and are increasing in value collectorwise. I had a Hondo Japan lawsuit era Strat copy (early70's) that got stolen when I was a kid. That was such a great guitar. All white with maple neck. Even as a beginner I sounded good on that guitar. I know Fender was having a cow at the time even with their own series of Japan made Strats because their quality control was exceeding USA versions and asking like half the price or less. Crazy.

Fantastic job, friend! I have played a few “Lawsuit Era” Tokais here in the US, and they’re fantastic. I owned a Tokai Les Paul that felt great, but had a twisted neck😢 I would have kept it if I had known how to fix it then (I do now). That Strat looks great! It started out so abused and sad. When you first showed it, my heart hurt very bad. But, when you finished it, my heart felt good, so you basically saved my life😝😝😝😝 The only things I would have done different would be to have shielded the whole pickup and control cavity. It looked like they did have aluminum foil in there, but it was so crudely done. The brass plate for the controls is good, but I like a silent guitar so I make sure everything is shielded under the hood. The nut looked good, but I may have replaced it with a TUSQ XL. I have switched all of my guitars out with them, and it makes a huge difference in tuning stability and sustain. Wonderful work, friend!! Tim, from Washington state, USA

That’s a beautiful old Tokai Strat. These were so beautifully built-if you find one at a reasonable price don’t hesitate, because I’ll be lining up to buy it! I’ve got an MIJ Fender Strat from the mid 80s and it’s just beautiful. Also have a Japanese-built 77 Greco LP copy that gets a lot of use and still looks and plays like a new guitar (well, like a very broken-in new guitar). I’ll never part with my Japanese-built guitars. They are works of art and testament to the highest quality standards that the Japanese manufacturing culture is founded on.

I would have left a lot of that patina on the chrome bits. Especially those old tuners. These lawsuit era Tokai models or really ANY of the Japanese guitars were fine instruments and much better quality than was being produced in the US at that point. Definitely worth some TLC

I love your video's, you do an amazing job! This is one though where the crappy paint job was awesome. I kinda wanted you to clean it all up as you did but leave the nasty paint. I t was a cool beater guitar look.

This video looks faked. Tokai's especially the older models are awesome guitars.

I have to agree, too many "alarm bells" going off. The guitar is made to look like it had undergone some heavy usage and poor paint job, but the frets, fretboard and neck and body were in VERY -- if not nearly pristine, with the exception of a few dings -- good if not excellent condition.

Is this where the dafties are hanging out? 😮 @pordiosero80 to comment on a video that you haven’t watched is daft, then to say it looks fake, but you haven’t actually watched it, is pure stupidity. Old Tokais are awesome guitars, but that has no relevance to fakery 🤷‍♂️ and having watched the video myself, one thing he could have done better was a fret dress, because of the amount of wear! So nothing of any value in this part of the comment’s section, other than a great chance to mock 🥳 if you don’t understand now, after it’s been pointed out to you … then ask your carers. Right-o, I’m off to fly a bicycle full of bananas to the post box to post to my friends. Regards. Don’t forget your pills.
