Psyvariar was a series we never really "got" when playing the Sega Dreamcast version of Psyvariar 2: The Will to Fabricate... but Psyvariar Delta has definitely gotten us up to code. This Switch, PC and PS4 release freshens up the Playstation 2 Psyvariar releases, adds a ton more replay and definitely delivers the goods, but how does it stack up?

Finally got a 1CC on stream last night, and took #14 on Score attack for Medium Unit/Axion R. It's so good, even if I am not.

Holy Shit ! I actually been kinda "mehh" on this one ,from seeing footage of others destroying generic looking enemy's & bosses in seconds . I had no idea getting my buzz on , could be so intricate & rewarding , till you guys explained it "of course" lol / smh . The mech dlc seals the deal ,& then some ! wow !

I felt exactly the same way playing Psyvariar 2 but once it clicked while playing Delta, the series as a whole became much, much more interesting. Bordering on Addictive really, but in a great way.

I'm in the same boat! The game would benefit from having a tutorial, this is a tough sell for newcomers not knowing what the "buzz" is all about hehe. Glad I finally bought it, I'm having a blast!

The presentation changes a lot as well. In a dull run it's lackluster, but playing properly it's so satisfying! (Oh, and I love the Cybattler ship as well)

Glad you are finally covering a game in this series. Still hoping for the second game to end up on PC. Also, didn't know that my PS2 copy of the game was Europe exclusive, kinda unusual given how often we end up getting left out.

There are three releases in Japan on PS2 and even an original Xbox release as well. We might even end up doing a comparison between them all.

I remember getting the game on Ps2 and was surprised as was a budget pal release, enjoyed the game a lot but was blown away by Psyvariar 2 as graphically at least was a major step up

The PAL version is still the best priced at about $11CAD. It's an absurdly good deal, provided you have a PAL PS2.

I first saw a variant of Psyvariar at an arcade. Great to see it coming to the Switch and modern consoles!

I think Delta made it EXA Arcadia as well, if I'm not mistaken, which included the Replay Plus mode. Not 100% on that though.

Another great video review. That said, anyone one here know why Asteroid Level track from the Delta Soundtrack not present in the games official OST? I simply love this track but it feels like it doesn't exist outside of the game itself -_-

Looks way different then I remember the PS2 version looking, although for some reason my head always mixes up this and Sipheed. Really need to go back and give both more of my attention obviously!

I'll definitely be hitting up the PS2 versions again, maybe with a gameplay comparison between PAL and NTSC-J versions.

Great review!!I have it on physical for Switch since its release, I play it with a flip grip, It's an awesome game.Better version i.m.o., because I have Dreamcast and PS2 versions, and portable it's better.Greetings from Barcelona Spain!!

I got my original playtime in on the flip grip myself, when I was travelling for a family event. It works well for Psyvariar.

@@z80player Arcade (Gesen) Love + Pengo is going to Switch, but I don't know about Shooting Love itself. But Combat Zeal and Shmups Skill Test are on Gesen Love, so it's a good step! There has been no word on Eschatos though. I'd dig it for sure.

Getting to the other hidden stages is impossible. I can see why Gamestop has a bunch of used copies now.

Which ones? I think reaching up to 2-C, 3-B, 4-B and even X-B (if X-A is reached before 4) is pretty doable by everyone. Higher stages are harder to reach, yes, but they should be a bigger challenge anyway. (Talking about Revision mode here)

The hitbox seems to not be visible, or is it? I have problem with bullethells without a clear hit dot, so i'm not convinced yet..

The hitbox it pretty much the ship's green canopy. It's a little sketchy when you're sinning all over the place though, and requires a little more of a hands-on feel that should be pretty easy to figure out though. It's more of an instinct thing.

I think Psyvariar 2 on Sega Dreamcast looks more graphicly impressive than this which is pretty amazing for the Dreamcast. I have never played this game, maybe I'll pick it up

How do you end up giving it 4.75 when all your ratings are all 5 ....i know it does not matter but that scoring system is strange

Because the end score is not an average of the other criteria.

They're not all 5. One area was given a 4.75.

We actually have the Premium Sound Box on PS4 as well, so we might do a feature on its contents. Maybe even a console series expose on all of the different releases!

@@StudioMudprints Yeah, that would be cool, showcase all of the shmups on a single console as a mega list, in my case, I bought a ps4 not specifically for shmups but Im glad its getting some ... I'm really surprised that the switch basically became the new home for shmups actually... crazy... need to get this console sometime...

Thats would be awesome, but I believe it will only ever be stuck on Dreamcast, PS2 and the original Xbox and all in Japan only.

This game has no tutorial. I got it for my nephew and wanted to check it out and make sure he would like it but it literally just drops you in without explaining anything. I've never played this game before so I have no idea what anything means. I have no clue what a version means Delta medium unit or revision. I'm absolutely clueless and he probably will be too. I hope I can track down some kind of Wiki about this game series. It would have been nice for them to include some kind of tutorial for newcomers. I don't even know what the symbols on the screen means and if I've seen the real ending or not. I play for like 10 minutes and it says I beat the game and I see the credits. Trying to explain all of this to my 14 year old nephew is going to be a difficult sell when I don't even know what's going on.

Ironically, many players have discovered what truly makes the Psyvariar series tick from this very overview. Sorry if it wasn't as clear as you would have liked.

Kinda weird that it didn't; you can still probably find it at any EB Games or Game Stop.
