ABOUT THE LANDSCAPE ILLUMINATED
Creative work is a process of discovery. When a person looks at the world, the mind triggers a desire to “capture” its essence or beauty. The creative person instinctually wants to cast light upon and illuminate the beauty they experience in the world's landscape.
This desire to capture or illuminate, to expose or show the beauty, is not always available to language at first. One struggles to express the feeling or thought that has been triggered. So, much of the time, how the thing will be expressed is an ongoing process. But that's why I call it the process.
The process is the most important, less important than the final piece. A creative person trusts in the actual process of finding a way to express beauty. A creative person has faith in the process. A creative person follows it, reaching in the dark for a metaphorical light switch one knows is somewhere. Of course, in the end, we fail to capture the beauty. The truth is, all we can do is point at it and ask, “Do you see it?” The pointing is the process. The pointing is the illumination.
As for me, my creative work has been done in several media. Because of this variety of media, I find it hard to say exactly what I do. If I define myself as a painter, I ignore so much of what I do. If I call myself “multidisciplinary,” again, I am pigeonholed or, even worse, run the risk of sounding pretentious. The word “creative” is what I have settled upon. I am creative. We all are; I’ve just made it my life work.
The creative process has led me to work in clay, oil paints, acrylics, wood, etched glass, words, and primitive crafts using handmade tools. Not all of these things make much sense in the daily world, but I've come to trust that if it moves me, it may move others. And so, I am sharing my explorations of this creative process.
