Guess what?! This week's unboxing leaves Natalie stumped when she's given a gemstone with no clues and has to guess its identity. Lucky for her, she is joined by Scott Sucher, a fellow "Gem Nerd", who helps her identify the gemstone and all of its characteristics!

Sulfur has such interesting properties... I would also be interested in seeing some more videos about the gem cutting process in action (the dap sticks and the lap wheel he was talking about). I have no idea how any of that works...

That was amazing. I didn't even know sulfur could crystallize like that.

Most crystal shops have only a few pieces of sulfur crystal, if any. They tend to be pricey compared to the usual fare. But, the nicer ones can be beautiful. And, most other stones can't get that kind of yellow. I personally have only one piece of crystalline sulfur, but if I were rich...

About strange sulfur minerals, i have some sample of some mineral formed during gas desulfurization. The remaining methane reacts with molten sulfur and slowly crystalize in the sulfur collecting tanks, once in a while the are cleaned and this mineral discarded. It is a whitish flaky somewhat opalescent stone, there is not much info about it (usual name is carsulf or carbsulf)

Possible future episode: Have you done garnets yet? Most would find it a surprisingly diverse group, with an interesting history of mistaken identity. Popular culture tie-in: On The Curse of Oak Island, a red faceted stone was unearthed---the first piece of actual 'treasure' these searchers have found on this Canadian island long-rumored to hide buried treasure of various origins, ranging from pirates to the Knights Templar. They speculated it was a ruby; my money was on spinel. I could tell by the primitive faceting (cut irregularly on one side only, other side cabochon) and setting that it was VERY old, and couldn't wait until last night's episode to see the results. It tested out to be rhodolyte garnet, and the piece was thought to be 500 years old! (The metal was silver, with copper as a contaminant.) Of course, whoever first owned the jewel must have assumed it was also ruby, as all red stones were thought to be at the time. (This seemed to be missed by our modern seekers, but would not had they been regular viewers of JTV.) I would love to know whether extensive testing of this stone by today's methods could indicate it's mine of origin, and thus possibly shed light on the Oak Island mystery. (If so, somebody needs to tell the Lagina brothers and company.....)

Never knew sulfur could crystalize into such large pieces, let alone be cut/faceted into a gemstone. I was flummoxed, too, though in retrospect the color and hardness should have given it away. Didn't know sulfur was birefractive. I was misdirected by what I saw (birefractive faceted stone), trying to think of other minerals that could maybe take on a yellow coloring with chemical impurities....and that's as far as I got, before the surprising reveal. What an illuminating episode, and awesome cutting job!

I suspected when she first pulled it out the box by the color. The special container hinted at that hardness. But, I was still unsure, because I didn't know about the double refraction. I knew sulfur crystallizes (I have one). But, I've never seen a cut gem of sulfur, so I've never seen that double refraction before. I wonder how it compares to Iceland spar.

Sulfur is NOT a Gemstone. To even ask a Gemologist what this is is way of their time. The SMELL of Sulfur would be enough to indicate what it is. Never touch Sulfur with your bare hands, always wear gloves.
