want to say thanks to everyone who has seen the video of my IROCZ and appreciate all the great comments on it. I just want to relay that I am not bashing he 305 engine as it was a great one as well, but just wanted to get the most bang for my buck if I was going to purchase one even if it meant having to settle for the automatic trans in order to get the 350 engine and T-tops. Love these cars from day one no matter what engine, trans, color or options they came with especially now that there are so few really nice ones on the road these days makes me really appreciate mine even more.

I know in 90 You could get the 1le model with the high output 305 with the 5 speed and because of the gearing it was technically faster than the 350.

This car is an original…..so this particular car DOSNT fit in my conversation…….and we don’t beat it up! The cars were…. Plenty fast if you like a stage coach….the 5.0 or 305 had some torque and 215HP. The 5.7 or 350 had 245 HP and 345 ft lbs torque. With a new cam, some porting and improved exhaust it’s easy to get 300HP on either engine. Don’t forget the PC…can get a new chip In any case….once you have been in an upgraded engine car with better HP you will know it and have more fun

Thanks for sharing! So my fist car was a 86 z28 gold package, oh the memory’s me and her shared together! Since then I have owned 12 camero’s but my second favorite was my 89 irock-z, she was a spittin image of this one in the video, had a lot of great time in that car as well, wish I wasn’t a snot nosed kid when I owned them! Wish now I would have appreciated them a little more and kept them and not done the customization I did to them and kept them stock and was just happy to have them, anyways thanks for sharing this again, brings back a lot of memory’s! Some day I’ll have another one sitting in my driveway begging to go out and terrorize the streets!

Love the car and love IROCs! My only critique is don't let this guy scare you away from 305s if you find a nice one. They actually made a 5-speed 305 with the same horsepower (230) as the base 350 in 88 and 89. In 1987 the G92 305 5-speed was only 10 less horsepower. Notice how he also says, "This car doesn't have a lot of horsepower, but I just love the way it handles" The 305s with the TPI motor will drive about the same. If you want to hotrod the car and try to get to 400hp you would want to start with a 350. Bone stock they aren't going to feel all that different. He was also referring to the 86 model with the high mount brake light and that was the lowest powered year. An LG4 305 was only 155hp. In 1985 the TPI 305 was 215hp. He may have test driven a 155hp 305 when he decided they were weak. He is correct though, these cars feel more modern handling-wise than you would think and they are torquey which makes them fun. GM kept the horsepower down but gave the TPI cars low end torque to feel more powerful. Nice examples like this are to be enjoyed anyways, not raced.

@@IfThisCarCouldTalk I'm a nerd about these cars so my apologies! The 305 gets a bad rep because they made about 5-6 different versions in these cars from 145hp up to 230hp. Every year they were improved (aside from 86) and especially after they switched to a roller cam in 87. G92 optioned cars had the same cam as the 350s. Some 5-speed 305 versions are becoming more sought after than the 350s as well and were more rare. Thanks for the content!

Bottom line is when it comes to collectibility people want the 350 doesn’t it mean the other engines were bad it’s just what people want. it is what it is. Just like my 89 has the 350 but it doesn’t have the T tops, the climate I live in I get more use out of the regular coupe, but the T tops would make it more desirable, it would probably mean a couple thousand dollars more in value.

Well done video. So great to see a car kept and loved over 30 years. Lots of temptations to sell or trade throughout those years. My 91 RS has the 305 with 29k miles. My 88 TA GTA has 67k with the 350 TPI. Definately dream cars for sure.

Gald to see you found your keeper. Looks really well kept. I worked at the Van Nuys plant 87-90. I had worked for a Div of GM for years and was lay off. I got recalled to work at Van Nuys 90 miles away, so I report there I had never worked on an assembly line. Camaros and Firebird, What an eye opener. I wish I could have made my own special Camaro! or Firebird. I was amazed that they let people Photo their car as it went down the line. That was COOL. Funny how when you build a car even if It's over 500 a night, per shift you never see them the same way even after all these years. You got a Great car Sir. Enjoy the ride!

It must have been amazing owning it in the early 90s and seeing the streets full of these cars and of course the 5.0 Mustangs etc. I've got an 89 IROC-Z the same colour as yours but I live in the UK. I did a video of mine 4 weeks ago so check it out, hopefully you'll enjoy it. I've owned mine for 6 years and changed the tyres which were from 2005, earlier this year, wow what a difference! I really enjoy getting over to the USA, I was there last year and am hoping to visit again once the covid situation is better and checking out some car shows.

8:06 is correct but the difference in power (240 HP @4,000 RPM vs 230 HP @4,000) is probably bare aluminum heads. It's basically the same engine. I got my hands on a set of virgin aluminum L98 heads pulled from a 87 vette I can say I have the same engine combination but of course I ported/polished and had multi angle job on the heads plus added a cam so those 240HP are history matched with higher compresion pistons, headers and prom chip programming. All mods period correct. 👍

Had a 1991 Z28 for 18 years it had the 305 tuneport injection had it rebuilt, balance, and blue, print ,port and polish heads little bit bigger cams in the factory JE forged pistons, but everything else around that motor was completely original down to the AC Delco battery and it would smoke a 350 lIrock or Z 28.

@@IfThisCarCouldTalk yep I just sold it three years ago. I put a lot of money in the car because my first five years when I bought it in 2000. I drove it as my daily driver and then I put it up. The trick is to keep the original tail pipes and exhaust sounding original. my friend owned a muffler shop, I cut the muffler off a2002 his customers brand new 02 SS Camaro with 116 miles on it. It came with this solid stainless steel inside and out SLP muffler which I think back at the time listed for $300 then you weld your factory tails on that one it sounded pretty much exactly factory, you have to run 3 inch going in because that’s how those cars came from the factory and then 2 1/2 on your factory tails.

What a sexy car, my favorite year is an 85 and I prefer the 305 versus the 350 as they are more reliable. I love 3rd gens ,my 84 z28 is a factory carb car she has a factory 305 / 700r4 auto she isn't a race car. These 3rd gens are porno to the eyes and ride and steer perfect . I love all camaros but only buy and drive 3rd gens

It only had the IROC Z emblem on the back, the 5.7 decals were on the lower side skirts. I made sure that all decals were replaced as it was before I removed them when it was repainted.

@@jasonc1975 they all had it ,either 5.7 tuned port injected or just tuned port injected (305)..also the iroc z on passenger side dash is wrong too...should be a z28 emblem with iroc-z in small print on bottom of emblem....beautiful car though.

@@jasonc1975 the '87s also had the 5.7 tuned port injection on the drivers side rear bumper. The '87 350tpi didn't come out till mid-year. I ordered & had one, it was built in Norwood, OH ... about 70 miles south of where I live.

This is one beautiful IROCZ!!!!!!!!!! I have a 1988 Camaro IROCZ that has the very same paint color (Corvette Flame Red) but with a hardtop & bright red stripes instead of silver. It has the 145mph speedometer, RPO G80 Positraction differential, RPO G92 Performance Axle, RPO GU5 3.23 rear gear ratio & fully equipped with all options even an engine oil cooler (RPO KC4) . It has only 37,000 ACTUAL miles! It has the 305 TPI engine with a 700 R4 4speed auto transmission with overdrive. It sure doesn’t run like a 305 though ( It has a Hypertech Thermo-Master computer performance chip along with a 160 degree SLP thermostat) this combo makes it run just like your 350 TPI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There was barely any difference in horsepower between the 305 and the 350. I honestly prefer the 305 5 speed over an automatic car any day of the week. Especially when its the car that I'm only driving here and there, I want it to be a manual.
