I love a bit of featheredge. Best looking fencing. So much nicer on the eye than concrete. I've only done my own fencing over the years but was wondering if you'd had many problems with such a narrow post hole? I use a border spade and dig the width of that square. About 1½ bags of postcrete per hole. Also, i couldn't really get on with those postsaver sleeves. Painted posts with bitumen paint in the end. I saw a vid on youtube....'proper diy' i think....and the sleeve filled up with water above the ground. 🤷‍♂️ Great job by the way. Love the 2x8 gravel boards. 👍🏻

3 questions : 1) why not using an auger to dig those holes , since you seem to be quite mechanized ( stump removal etc..) 2) all the bushes on the neighbor side, they are just cut short and will grow back, any possibility to ask the neighbor to remove them all.3) how about the other 2 sides of the property ?
@gorillagroundsandgardens
@gorillagroundsandgardens 9 ай бұрын
1) the type of ground we have here is full of rocks so even when using a 150mm auger you end up with sometimes a 300mm or more hole that needs a lot more concrete 2) We cut the bushes down and then dug out the stumps so they won't come back. 3) There are good hedges on the other sides of the property so a fence is not required.
@fencer39

I suppose you retreated all the cut ends and post tops and didnt nail through 2 feather boards as you were putting them up allowing for expansion / contraction thus avoiding the possibility of splits boards. Otherwise it looks quite tidy. Would have liked to see a back weather on the posts !

Those are post savers. They protect the post around ground level where it is more likely to rot. When correctly installed will add 5 years+ to the life of the post.

Hi, how did you set the height of the posts to achieve consistent height above the ground? Thanks
@gorillagroundsandgardens
@gorillagroundsandgardens 2 ай бұрын
We didn't. We used longer posts and then set the heights of the rails and gravel board using a string line. Marked the posts and then rested the large saw on the top rail to cut the excess off the posts. With pressure treated posts rotting on the top would happen a long time after the posts have rotted at ground level.

@grumpyoldgit8254 I hear about it. So, how you explain the fence in this video?
@gorillagroundsandgardens
@gorillagroundsandgardens 8 ай бұрын
In theory if the person that pays for the fence can put the good side wherever they like. The neighbour in this case asserted there was a legal requirement to put the nice side facing them. To the best of my knowledge this requirement does not exist but the clients wanted to keep the neighbour happy.

1st thing, you could have saved a days labour on by using AUGER / FENCE POST HOLE BORER / GROUND DRILL, 2nd thing I noticed you didnt slant the cut on the top of the posts for rain run off? 3rd thing, you made the fence like a sail, one good gust will take it out, wheres the air going to pass through the fence, exactly none, any good fence builder knows wind passing threw a fence reduces the push over
@gorillagroundsandgardens
@gorillagroundsandgardens 4 ай бұрын
1. We have large amounts of rocks in the ground that tend to make an auger move away from where we want the hole or make a hole 3x the size we actually want. 2. Water running off the top of the post doesn't make any difference from experience, the post will rot at ground level long before the top rots. 3. I pleased to report this fence and in fact all others we have put up over the last 5 years of fencing have made it through all of the winter storms. I would love to see some of your fence builds so I can see how a "good" fence builder does it and take some notes!
