Me too. I wouldn't take my old Defender in to many of the depths you see mindless people driving their cars into. Thing is, even if you take it nice and slow and do everything right to avoid taking water into the engine, you've still got the scummy water coming in to the car and soaking into the carpets etc. Why would you want that? Do the 5 minute detour instead.

The U.K. Offshore Power Boat circus held an event in my home town years ago (think F1 on the water) and they all turned up towing their very expensive race boats being fancy American 4X4s. In the week that they were there one of the local farmers made a fair bit of cash towing the boats and the tow cars out of the water. The usual failure was to reverse the boat trailer down the steep slipway into the water to recover the boat leaving the tow-car with its rear wheels just in the water. They would then floor the throttle, the four wheels would spin on the aptly named ‘slip’way and the car and trailer slid downhill into the water. Chris turned up in his Series 1 Land Rover and calmly pulled them out. What was strange was that the other drivers did not seem to learn anything from the experience, they seemed to think that full power was the only way. The most interesting thing about the whole week was that Donald Campbell’s daughter was one of the competitors.

For anyone wondering repair costs for some: 2018 BMW 118d hydro locked and recovered via dragging not lifting is a £28,000 repair bill from BMW. Hydro locking destroys compression components in the engine, conrods etc and dragging destroys the gearbox and diff.

@@joskd8491 umm, you'll have ZERO chance of stating the engine with the plugs out. You'll have zero compression and zero spark. You need to get the water out first, preferably spray in some WD40 and then reinstall the plugs. Honestly, what sort of idiot do you think I am? Also, hydrolocked does not mean damaged. Some of these cars being driven the way they are, there is very likely some damage and for at least one of the vehicles I watched, likely pretty severe damage. But you won't know until you diagnose it. And step one is get the water out and crank it.

@joskd8491 8 ай бұрын
@@35manning I think you misunderstood my comment, it was a little short .I'm dutch, so English is not my native language. I meant that starting without the plugs is to remove the water out of the combustion chambers, and after that, after checking the airbox, put the plugs back in and try to start it. Maybe one might be lucky. But a hydrolocked engine is almost certain pretty damaged (damaged valves, bent rods, things of that nature) so I don't think this BMW will ever run without a new or rebuilt engine. I think it will cost the owner about 10k Euro's. Price for stupidity

Sheesh. They must have saw dust for brain cells. If i even think the water goes up to the wheel nuts on my rims then i am doing an about-turn and going a different route.

Always know where the air box intake is! Mine is at door pillar height so I’m good if I have to drive slowly through water.

My 12 year old son did a Land Rover experience day for young drivers and did better wading through 60cm of water than most of these drivers. Knowing a vehicles wading depth and looking at the depth gauge would help a lot here.

By the way, to put the X3 F25 in neutral you need to screw in a bolt underneath the car at the gearbox. Otherwise the whole drive train is being ***ked up, like you see here the wheels are spinning the opposite way.

If it’s coming over the bonnet then it’s sucking it into the engine.

I love the pop the bonnet and peek inside to see why it does not start...hint..it was that 3 foot of water that you drove through..LOL. At least the guy in the BMW finally got to change his 5 years old air filter at 8:50 so not all bad eh.

I like it when they open the bonnet and pretend to have a clue what they’re looking for. As if drying an air filter out will somehow get water out of the combustion chamber.

How ironic is this video. Expensive Beemers hydro-locked and the globally slagged-off Land Rover Discovery comes to the rescue. Gold.
