A ‘white’ painting can be difficult to understand. By best advice look from a different perspective at it. The art of Robert Ryman is a good example to do so. I show, by painting myself several examples, how it works for me. Best advice: start painting and stop thinking.
The video about the artwork on the wall behind me: • Paint like Hans Hartun...
Philips collection video: • EXTENDED VERSION! Robe...
Materials
The art materials I use in the videos are not sponsored.
I prefer to work on multi-purpose paper, more info in this video: • How to choose the RIGH...
In almost all my videos I use with Winsor&Newton Galeria acrylics, if not, I will say so in the video.
Other materials I use are in random order: 5, 10 and 40mm brushes, palette knives, acrylics medium, Ecoline liquid watercolor, Lyra color pencils, Lyra soft pastels, oil pastels, Stabilo color pencils, paper palette pad and basic masking tape. I also use household items like a permanent marker, scrub sponge, scissors, paper towel, and so on.

Hi Albert. As always, you present fresh ways of evaluating art, (I don't mean financially). More importantly, you offer fresh ways of examining our own thinking and reactions to art, new ways of seeing. There is a world of difference between looking and seeing. Most people look, very few actually see. Seeing, implies trying to understand what one sees. It's the moment when someone says, "Oh, I SEE now. I Understand." We need more people like you in the world, Albert.

Thanks Gordon, sounds like a compliment 😉 But I agree with you looking leads to seeing and understanding. And a different opinion. Have a wonderful day, Albert

I am inspired to paint over a work in progress which is built up of layers and textures. I had not considered painting over it with textured strokes, over a base coat of a solid color. Thanks for the inspiration.

What a wonderful way to start a Sunday morning. I am the person in the art museum who turns her back on solid color paintings, regardless of their size or fame. This video is making me rethink ... am I missing the point? Is it indeed art after all? Not just a scam? I am not being duped? Hmm... thank you. I will be working on your exercises and create a series to ponder over.

Thanks Janene, wonderful to hear you will try looking in a new way to paintings like this. Art or what art is is debatable, but art likes this often needs another approach because it easily runs into thoughts about art and if someone is open to change. Have fun making the painting. Albert

I remember when I was younger to work on my art to the point of 'perfection' where in the end all fun was gone :)).. but once I discovered Abstract Art, Art Brut and Outsider Art, I didn't know or like or 'understand' before, it was a completely new realm, energy, spirit and excitement to work on.. this video is brilliant, it's always art and philosophy so nicely 'packed' and thoroughly explained, while discovering a great artist.. you are the best!

Interesting thoughts Albert. I was unaware of Robert Ryman. I guess that falls into conceptual art as well? I sometimes am mystified as how someone like Ryman ever got famous. Just offering my point of view, but he doesn't seem to have a lot of talent, and I certainly would not buy a white painting like that as I can do that myself. I guess that seems a harsh criticism, but just being honest.

Thanks Culture Fan, I can understand your criticism. But he fitted just right in in his days. He was friends with (later) famous artists. I guess it takes perhaps a leap to appreciate what he did, but it is a really different approach to art making. Wherever you see one in a museum, it's different. I can't explain why, but I kept looking. Intrigued because it' looks like 'nothing', but the nothingness is present in it. I loved it. Albert

He became famous cause he was the first to do it and only did white paintings for decades up until his death. It's not about being only white it's about the exploration of painting techniques and effects. That's makes his work so intriguing and famous.

Hi Albert I hope you are well. I stumbled across your channel a few weeks ago. I saw your old Mondrian video and was inspired to paint my own picture. I've never painted anything other than a door before but I wanted to try. I made a video of my experiment: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qsuYdqhhl7_dcqM.html I am happy with the result. I hung it on my living room wall. Feel free to take a look, Let me know what you think. Regards Marc
