In Part one I show you how to take apart your Sturmey Archer three speed hub and how to organize the parts in sequence so as not to lose track. Having the parts set down correctly will speed up the assembly.

Wow. Amazing they could build such a complex system and sell the thing in a bike for a couple hundred dollars in today's money. Great job taking it apart for us. Invaluable. Thank you big time.

Thank you.I have some troubles with my sturmey, so now I can see what the problem might be. What a marvelous but complicated meccanical piece. Two bike meccanics could not repair it. Now I have more insight and courage.Thanks.

It is complicated but once you have repaired one it gets easier. I needed youtube help to repair my first one and now it's not so bad. Thanks for the feedback.

All right. Meanwhile I have succeeded in opening, cleaning, oiling and reassembling the sturmey archer gear. Also the adjusting of the indicatorpen afterwords have been succesfully done. Thanks to your video, but also mostly of the ones of "the bike guy", which is very practical. Without them I would never dared to open the gearbox. Thanks! I noticed that the distance between 1st and 2nd gear is very little in comparision with the much greater distance between 2nd and 3rd gear. Why the inventors did not make the distances the same I wonder, this would make the adjusting much easier.

Hi Willie, I recently acquired an AW 3speed from 1954 and I am refurbing it. It has the left -left threaded ballcap that unscrews and I can't get it to come loose. I've already disassembled the whole thing and want to get this cap of for cleaning. It was pretty frozen/rusted on the left end and I've got a new planet cage coming tomorrow. I might have to replace the left end pawls and screws as they look pretty bad, Any tips on getting the left-non drive ball cap loose and are they still available? Thanks, Mike

One must use WD 40 and leave it for 48 hrs an then try again. One can try shocking it loose by hitting the tool with the hammer to shock the thread loose.

Hi Willy (or anyone else) , I'm rebuilding an old AW hub I picked up off of Ebay just to get familiar with how these work and how to take apart and reassemble. I have put it back together using this video and after cleaning and I lost one of the pawl springs on the bottom left side. Someone told me that I could put it together with one pawl and bench test it on a vice since there would not be a load on it. I did not oil the hub just used spray lube for the bench test. It works fine by pulling the chain out in 2nd and 3rd but will not go into 1st gear. Could this be because I am missing one pawl and or my springs are probably original from 1964 and they are weak? Thanks, Mike

If the hub is clicking the Pawl's are working. One can use old springs to fix pawl's. It is very hard to test bench the gears. One can hardly tell the difference between gears when testing. One has to test it on the bicycle with the cable to adjuster pin fixed and set to factory specs. Many have problems with the adjusting of the gears properly and often have not installed the cable correctly or adjusted incorrectly and / or not locked the pin in place. I hope this helps...Cheers Willy

Hello willi I have a problem with mySturmy with a permanemte noise that no one can fix it. Could I contact you?
@WillyDahm
@WillyDahm 3 жыл бұрын
It sounds like something is broken inside. Is it a grating, grinding noise or a clicking noise?. If you flood it with oil does it get less noise? It may be the Pawl's and /or bearings that need replacement and that means opening it up and repairing it.

Its set wrong.You must check cable is correctly installed and coax cable holder at end is fixed in the correct place. Also check that gear shifter is fixed and not lose. Then set pin to factory specs and tighten lock net. It's missing second as it is the one that misses most when set wrong. One sets pin while in 2nd gear as that is the factory (specs) way of setting gears. Watch DIY Sturmey - Archer 3 speed adjustments n my channel. Hope this solves your problem. Cheers
