In this video, I show you how to overhaul/repair/grease vintage Sturmey Archer hub. I removed all the old bearings and replaced them with new ones. When I saw the rust all over inside of the hub, at that moment didn't expect much of this hub.

I worked in a bike shop back in the 70’s and tore these things down all the time. And coaster brakes. One day, I was trying to fix a bike with a coaster brake hub and the thing kept slipping somehow in a ways I had never seen before. So I tore it down to clean it up and I found the usual stack of brake discs, but something else I had never seen before. There was a ring of gear teeth inside the hub, and two huge pawls that were not properly mounted… or so I thought. I fiddle with it a bit and then it began to dawn on me, They were large to be heavy and they were spring to swing out when spun at a specific speed. I put the thing back together and sure enough, it was a two speed hub with an Automatic Shift. ( not one of those 2 speeds where you kick back to change gears. ). You would get the crank going at a good clip and then CLUNK, it would suddenly upshift to a significantly different gear and your cadence would be slow. Made by Torpedo. Perfect for a really great “single speed” fixed gear bike. Except it downshifts automatically when you slow down or stops and upshifts just when your cadence starts to get too fast.

Perhaps you don't have access to one, but a vise to hold the hub securely in place would be a big help. That said, you did a very nice job on a seriously neglected hub. Good to see this beauty back in working condition. Thank you...

What a well-photographed video with attention to all the details! Thanks for sharing. However, respectfully, you made a very important error in using grease to lubricate this hub. Many mechanics use grease, not knowing it's the cause of the most common problem with these hubs, stuck pawls (ratcheting mechanism). You are supposed to use light oil, not grease. With grease, if the hub is neglected and not regularly cleaned and the grease refreshed, the grease gums up (becomes sticky) and the pawls get stuck, and possibly the indicator rod (which changes gears). Also it will cause more friction in the gears. You are supposed to put 2 teaspoons of light oil when rebuilding a hub, and a few drops every week or two through the oil hole. You CAN use grease for the bearings, however. The grease there helps to seal the light oil in the hub, as well as keep dirt and water out. These recommendations are from the Sturmey-Archer service manuals, as well as sheldonbrown.com.

I was worried about all that grease being used on the interior mechanism having previously learned not to do that. I intended to watch other videos on the subject to see how they do it, then I saw your clear explanation and references to reliable sources of information, so thanks!

5:14 These rings can be really stubborn! If the wheel is complete still, you can hold the wheel rim as a form of counter leverage while you hit the punch. It's also amazing the state these hubs can get and yet they still can be restored.

Yes, the most of wheels are in bad condition so I take off hubs, and it's easier to film it, becouse I have small studio right now. And these old hubs are made to be unbreakable, that is most interesning to me about these hubs.

Marvelous video. I have a question: Is it better grease than oil to lubricate all the mecanism?. I ask this because, most of time, grease tends to stuck all the little springs. Hope I had explain it well.

The hub gears shouldn’t be lubricated with grease, only the bearings. Sturmey Archer recommend a few drops of SAE 20 oil (lawnmower engine oil) for the internal gears, with a drop or two added every 2 weeks via the filler cap.

on 36.46 you make a mistake: before you put on the square washer you should open the hub by turning the right hand bearing cone 1/2 of a turn, this is according the official Sturmey Archer guide. After opening, put the square washer and lock the right side

19:53 my hub gears did not have this spring, is this a problem? Also, the hog washer at 36:53 did not have the same shape, but it was actually a normal washer. Was working on a Sturmey Archer from a Brompton, so maybe they are different.

Thanks for the video - I have same hub and want to replace the bearings - could you tell me what size they are as I have no idea how to measure them? Thank you
@TheKabumcek
@TheKabumcek 3 жыл бұрын
To measure bearings, you need a Caliper or you can take some to the bike part shop and show it to them. You need the same number and same size of bearings. If the bearings are in the crown, just buy she same crown of same size bearings. :D I hope you understand what I'm telling :D You have this video where I show how to replace axle and bearings on rear wheel, there you can see how to replace, measure bearings. The rules are the same. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eKeliK53tZm3gmg.html
