You either have or you haven’t got style. Well, Mr Sean, YOU have got style, manners and you’re polite. I have to wear a tie, if it's required. But, like you say, I’m a certain vintage and I like to be “mature”. The 'leaders’ need to concentrate on what they were elected to do. I'll do what I have to do; and Mr Sean, our chum, will do what he does - and better than anyone else ❤

Yes, I think if you are in middle or upper management as well as government positions or church, you should dress more formally. There are plenty of relaxed-wear clothes for the weekend, vacation, or hanging out around the house. People are way too sloppy with clothes and practically non-existent with manners.

I find it very nice when people still hold open a door for the person going in or out. And some men are very nice to let women go ahead of them on the bus or give up their seat to a lady or elderly. And people need to go back to the 50's and dress nicely. Since the 60s it has gone downhill. Here in America we had a member of Congress show up in SHORTS so disrespectful. If you are in POWER you should be dressed appropriately.

I am a Texas lady and I will open doors for others if appropriate and always say ma’am and sir. The words “thank you or excuse me” are far too uncommon these days. I always thank a gentleman when he lets me go ahead of him through a door. I taught my sons good manners and I expect it from others. We live in Florida and have done so for almost 15 years. My husband is a hospital pharmacist and has always worn a dress shirt and tie under his lab coat. We lived in Florida for over 5 years and he retired but still wore a tie and a dress shirt. Finally he graduated to shorts and I suggested he give up the ties and wear polo shirts without ties. He was aghast at the suggestion. But took the hint and hasn’t worn a tie for many years. But as he said, it’s a difficult habit to break.

Neil you are so right. The weatherman on 'Points West', our local news programme, is a good looking older man and has always been impeccably dressed in a nice suit and tie. Now, suddenly, he has started wearing unmatching trousers and jacket, with an open neck shirt. He looks a mess and I always shout at the TV "you've forgotten your tie again". I must say he looks a bit uncomfortable, I reckon the BBC have put him up to it. Trendy, no thanks.

Young people think you're old - they don't care if you ditch your tie. A couple decades ago I took my college student niece and her friends to the famous Pebble Beach golf tournament. I excitedly told them that Tiger Woods would be playing. They wrinkled their noses and said he was old -- they liked Sergio Garcia, the "Spanish Sensation". At the time they were 20, Sergio was 22 and Tiger was the ancient age of 26.

At a doctor’s office recently…there was an elderly man in a wheelchair. Someone came out to get him for all the usual pre-checks. Apparently, he addressed someone as “hon” …and she was mortally offended and berated him for speaking to a woman in such a manner. When he came back out to sit down…he asked me if I would be offended if he or someone else referred to me as “hon”. I was sitting with my husband, and they had already spent 20 minutes chatting, and just with his age..I assumed that was how he addressed most females, and, of course, I wouldn’t be offended. Then we heard that sad story. Even when I think about it…I still want to call that Dr.’s office and give them my 2 cents worth!

It's so, so sad Neil. My 14 year old grandson and his 14 year old friend were saying they don't know whether to be courteous to women or not because they get blasted for holding a door; blasted for bringing flowers on Valentine's Day and blasted for letting a girl go first. There was a special banquet---gowns, suits, corsages, etc---and most of the boys didn't invite a girl because they were afraid to deal with the very issue you mentioned. Gone are the sweet days where boys could just court a girl to a nice event and it was a special memory. My granddaughter connected with a boy who braved the risk, and asked her for a date. When the others saw it was safe and she enjoys being treated with respect, other boys came forward to pay attention. My grandson also connected with a sweet girl who enjoys his good manners, which has caused other boys to come forward to flirt with HER. But they're afraid to step out on their own because they've been demeaned so many times. for being a gentleman. This can't be leading anywhere good.

I wait for my turn, letting someone go before me in line or thru the door with a full cart as I go in, and they go out. Im sad it's come to this where boorishness is the norm. Common courtesy says a lot about people who practice it and those that don't. At least even if they think Im strange because I behave properly, I never embarrass myself by crashing thru the world and insulting people like its okay to do so. I never will toss my manners aside, I don't feel the need to sound like and act like everyone else who evidently stopped social development in the 8th grade . Cheers!👋👋👋😁

I rarely chime in, but this pushed my button. Manners and respect seem to have “left the building!” I live on the liberal left coast of the USA, and I am aghast at the lack of manners and civility, in our world. I was raised to say “Yes Ma’am, and Yes Sir”, stand up straight, and look somebody in the eyes, when addressing them. It seems lost now ( except for my adult children! ). I always appreciate a well dressed person, and always check out your ties, when listening to your commentaries. Great ties, always interesting commentary. ( sometimes so interesting, that I forget to “like!”…!😊

I fully agree about the fashion. In big business in the US one needs a full suit to even get an interview!

Leadership is about respect and trust. People are so busy wanting to be mates and this is where discipline goes out the window. I have notice that several of the MPs seem to be getting ready for the election and having style make overs and the result is muted dressed as lamb. It just highlights that you’re dealing with either a load of idiots or crooks.

There’s a time and place for certain attire and it takes a certain awareness and good sense to know when to wear what. That’s why people have stylists. it’s not just about fashion, it’s about what’s appropriate. This does matter.

Classic styles usually stay in style or come back to be favorites. Though much style has been regressing for a few years the pandemic really hurt style & fashion. People worked at home in t-shirt & shorts or their pjs. When I see a man in good suit or a woman with professional attire it gives me a good feeling, knowing that the person is confident about themself & others.

I'm with you Neil. My dad wore a suit and tie his entire working life. Lots of people have more confidence in people who don't look like they've been pulled through a hedge backwards. If they can take the time to get spruced up, they're more likely to pay attention to the details, I think these torn jeans and tatty shirts do not belong in the hoard room😊

I absolutely agree with you, Neil. Sadly, good manners seem to be gone for good. It only takes a little effort to be polite. I think the way a lot of the younger generations dress is just plain sloppy. You always look very neat and well groomed, Neil. You're right -- you either have style or not.

I always stressed manners in my elementary classroom. It made a difference in behavior.

My parents were keen on me learning and practicing outstanding manners and etiquette. They both were excellent examples for me and decided I would attend a once a week class in Charm School for six weeks when I was probably 9 years old in a small group of girls. The class was taught by a woman who was a modeling agent in Los Angeles, and later very internationally well-known, Caroline Leonetti.
