Your friendly reminder that culture shock is real and quite literally ~the point~ of studying abroad. To fully immerse yourself in another culture and move to an entirely new country (you’ve never been to) is a lot of change. That doesn’t mean it’s not good change but it means things are different and oftentimes takes more than 48 hours to adjust to. Being culturally shocked is a GOOD thing because it means you’re actually learning something + realizing how different other parts of the world work. 😁 Be nice!!!

I studied abroad in Florence in 2018, so wish I could be in your shoes and do it again with new eyes. Culture shock is sooo real I cried a lot when I arrived and reverse culture shock is also real when you return home to USA. Have so much fun!!

Haha yes def different. It’s bigger than it looks but true Italian decor. Our landlord provides everything so sadly can’t change much but making the most of it 😁

The food will be different of course. I find it is much better outside of the tourist areas. Goes to show how spoiled we are in North America .. Culture shock is a very good thing. A huge learning experience that will gain you so much more knowledge on another level. My sister travels the world and she is very exciting to listen to her stories. I hope you will too. You look lovely as always. Love the white dress your first day and the white top from Walmart. Only YOU can make Walmart clothes look so beautiful. :) Have fun!

You need to visit Gelateria La Carraia!! Depending on where you are it may be a bit far since it's across the river but it was my roommates and I's favorite place!

Hey McKenzie. Culture shock will obviously be real. You are in another country and honestly can’t have the expectation to have the foods that you’re used to at home. That is truly part of the immersive experience of being abroad and it seems naive to think that things would be similar. Language is one thing and although your school is offering lessons while there, maybe try learning some key phrases on your own. There are a lot of translation apps that could help. When in another country, locals will help if they see that you are truly making an effort to embrace the culture and not resist it. Many Americans go abroad with the expectation that things will be made easy for them and they won’t have to change much. My advice would be to embrace the Italian culture and try to break out of your comfort zone and live like the locals. You will have a more joyful experience that way. Wishing you the best experience in Italy this semester. ❤️

Never did I expect for things to be the same way as they are at home, it’s just shocking to realize how much variety we truly have in America that’s all. We came knowing some basic conversational Italian but are learning how to converse more so and really understand the language in our classes. Not naive just different that’s all :) we live in an area of mostly locals whereas most of our classmates are surrounded by lots of tourism so by day three of being there (which this video was) were just getting used to it! Thank you!!

I googled it before saying anything but drinking tap water in italy is safe you guys should also ask the locals or anybody there really to make sure

I just have never been a tap water drinker unless it’s filtered through the brita haha. Very normal in America. Getting used to it though!

I’m not trying to be rude at all! But why didn’t you try to learn Italian before going to Italy? You’re in their country and it’s a lot to expect of them to be able to help you in English.

Because we are required to take 16 weeks of Italian once we get here :)

@@HSwift44 I don’t expect her to learn the entire language rather key phrases that will help her navigate Italy better. I think Americans (not her, speaking generally) often expect others to cater to them. Why should Italians have to speak English if they’re in Italy where the native language is Italian?

@@QueenBe4Life nobody said we didn’t know key phrases! We came knowing a handful of basic conversational terms but not the entire contents of the grocery store which is where we were mostly struggling. We don’t expect to be treated differently but don’t forget this was only our third day so getting acclimated takes time. Be nice please :)
