A huge thank you to our sponsor DIPSEA (‪@DipseaStories‬), the app for spicy audio stories, for supporting us in bringing this episode of What's Underneath to life. Head to dipseastories.com/StyleLikeU for an extended 30-day free trial and prioritize your pleasure today!
In this episode of What's Underneath, actress and singer Janelle Monáe honors every version of themself by bringing back their iconic tuxedo, a symbol of her early career, only to shed it once again as a celebration of her newfound freedom in her body and sensuality.
Where Janelle once relied on their androgynous presentation as a means of pushing back against societal pressures to conform to gender norms, they have since discovered that their gender fluidity transcends the confines of how they dress and can be found whether they’re covered up or wearing no clothes at all.
Join us as we delve into Janelle’s story, where every piece of themselves is embraced with open arms, and where you are encouraged to do the same.
Listen to Janelle’s newest album, Age of Pleasure, now available on all platforms.

It's not that I feel It's not her choice, it's just boring and predictable and a space where patriarchy wants women, sexualised and self-objectified and I thought she was more of an individual, a woman who valued her art and femininity and didn't follow the herd, Women are more than nakedness and s3x. There are people who ask and say the same thing about certain women in the world and the way they have been conditioned via a certain belief system to cover up their bodies from head to toe. I am sure you can figure out the group of women I am speaking about. My comment would be removed if I use specifics.
@samantharivera7747
@samantharivera7747 Жыл бұрын
Ma'am, with all do respect there is a good reason for women to cover up and we should care about how we affect men. Don't women want men to care about how they affect women? Men are not sensitive like women, yet there is a desire for men to be sensitive towards women. Why should men have to change their nature to make us feel comfortable, to appease our emotions. Look at the way men treat each other. I doubt women want that kind of treatment. So it goes both ways. Women including myself and society do not understand the seriousness of male sexuality. Trans men have discovered this and realize it's no joke. Until any woman can spend a day as a man with male hormones, you won't understand why it's a good idea for women to not overexpose themselves. Just saying there's usually a good reason for these kinds of things.

I’m gonna be a little vulnerable in this but I hope some can relate. I remember watching Monáe when I was in 8th grade and always thought “wow a famous artist who doesn’t reveal much” mostly because at that time I didn’t like showing off my body and was into wearing “masculine clothing” (ie baggy pants and shirts). Today, I’m still struggling to love my body because I believe that if I don’t show off some skin I will never attract a male, but always felt uncomfortable wearing tight clothing and dresses especially since I’m not the preferred body type. When Monáe came out with their new album I was pissed because I thought “girls like me can’t get no representation” and thought the music industry was pressuring them into revealing themselves for views. I was wrong. So dead wrong. The way I see them love and accept themselves made me bawl after this video. I deeply apologize for my way of thinking because this helped me realize I’ve been healing the wrong pain. It’s gonna take me some time to believe “I am not responsible for your urges” and “I’m sexy whether I’m revealing or not” but I’m working my damn hardest cause I want to be able to look at myself and say “I love you”. Thank you for this video I apologize if my comment is too long 😅.

Janelle Monáe’s music video “Make Me Feel” was the first time I ever saw someone representing me. The first time I felt that recognition, and resonance. Representation is everything. At the time it was their bisexuality and rejoicing of it that made me feel seen - but her androgyneity and celebration of that as well has always been just as influential, even before I realized they were non-binary like me. Their music has also always stoked my passion for and learning process around anti-racism. They are such wonderful role models for fighting against systemic discrimination and oppression in all forms. As a teacher, I want to make more lesson plans around their works. As a former academic, I daydream about writing a phd on their afrofuturistic emotion picture and other similarly political and deeply moving works. As a singer, I would take their Pynk album to a desert island and be contented to parse her lyrics, harmonize, and float on her music. As a human, I owe so much joy and learning and feeling seen to their music.

As a Janelle Monae fan from day, I didn't know how much I needed this video. Their departure from the initial Black and White styling left me bittersweet, wanting more of the Cindy Mayweather, Afrofuturistic style and storytelling but appreciative of their discovery of self. Fast forward some, here I am finding liberation and a reclaiming of my own self, identity and body image and it feels like I'm being encouraged by the artist I thought I "lost" many moons ago. Thank you StyleLIkeU & Janelle for this incredible lens and meditation.

"I'm mirroring back your discomfort". I feel that and I appreciate the journey. You clearly see the hypocrisy in some people, today, making comments like "what happen to the suits?", "why has she sold out?", "She's just like everyone else now", etc, etc. These people are not fans, imo. Because if they were, they would remember "Metropolis". They would remember 'Jane Lee' and 'Suzie Scorcher'. They would remember you performing Mushrooms & Roses live and drawing a beautiful nude form of a female. They would remember 'Yoga'. They would remember the LONG version of 'Pink', 'Make Me Feel'. Why is this shocking?! Keep doing you, Janelle! ❤

I've been so happy to follow along with Janelle Monáe's journey as a long time fan of their work and fellow enby/queer person. It's so validating to see nonbinary people talk about their comfort with their body and that journey to finding that comfort in ways that were similar to my own journey. It's just do fantastic that there's Black nonbinary people who are so open, amazing, and visible at this time with everything going on right now. I hope that helps other (Black) enbies know we're here, your valid, and you too can find joy and peace with yourself one day.

I feel like her mindset is so transcendent and free. I love what she said and feel inspired by her courage to show up bravely. It’s so beautiful to learn how to love yourself, how much work and effort it takes to undo the toxicity and harm that dysfunction creates. As women I think we’ve been trained to feel ashamed (self conscious about our bodies). This causes so much harm, and it’s so hard to validate ourselves and understand where that feeling of shame came from (it didn’t come from us, and we never deserved it).

8:27 One of my favorite quotes is from Memoirs of a Geisha, which I think is somewhat relevant here: "Water can carve its way even through stone. And when trapped, water makes a new path." I get that they're saying they're like both. I just like that water can surround, be held by, or even pass through rock. They can exist harmoniously in so many different ways. I think Janelle's relationship with their different elements is beautiful 💖

What she said about family and public embarrassment is so relatable. I related to that so deeply. Especially wanting to always be present with the people you love and not letting them down. Its like we have limited time with each other and sometimes theres so much guilt for not living each moment to the fullest.

I'm so glad I found this series. I've had 15yrs of health issues, changing body and physicality. I'm now in my mid-50's and had been struggling to accept my new shape and new reduced abilities but am finally, FINALLY appreciating what & who I've grown into. Thank you for helping me to do that.

"I've apologized to my body, to my cells. I've let my body know that it's us, we have the autonomy, and I won't betray you. I won't betray my body, i won't betray me for anybody. I may have betrayed us before but not again. Not again. Not again" - this made me cry, resonates deeply

I am so proud of her and the evolution Janelle is going through. So many people passed ignorant judgements on them when they released their new music video. It was most unfortunate, because those individuals were comfortable with Janelle occupying a certain space and a made up ideology in their own minds.

I'm always learning about what awareness, growth, and self-love looks like when hearing or watching Janelle. We all just out here having experiences in these bodies, in our skin, with our feelings, and with the things and beings that have impacted us 💯 Also, really really grateful J honored that style in particular, it's a vibe and an awesome call-back. Get it in!

Every since I heard about Janelle Monáe's more recent, unapologetic expression of self-love and enjoyment of freedom, I came to like her, and be extremely impressed by her. I now find that I myself, on a variety levels, identify with the message she's conveying, what she represents, and who she is as a person. I'd love to do a 🎶 project with her.

This episode made me so emotional 😭 everything she said resonated with me on such a deep level. The journey to self love and peace while experiencing depression and anxiety takes a lot of inner work. There is so much beauty in overcoming and getting to a place of radical acceptance of self. When she said “it is not my responsibility to adjust my freedom to make you feel comfortable “ real tears 😭.
