Wow! I went to find your nursery on Google Earth and was able to take a walking tour of the entire place. It was neat! I only expected to see it from the road in “street view”, but I was able to walk down every pathway in the entire nursery. You should mention this in your videos, as those of us who live far away, like me, will love to see it! I did not know that this was possible.

Peter, we bow to the master and don't mind if you don't talk often. Just so long as we can look over your shoulder and marvel at the expertise you are trying to impart to us lower mortals. Beautiful tree, beautiful Bonsai , better you than me I would be scared to touch let alone prune and wire such a bonsai. Greetings from Brisbane Australia.

Its amazing to see what can be done over many years! Im new to bonsai, and tend to want instant gratification. Mr Chan you obviously have an endless supply of trees to work on, but im interested to learn how you taught yourself the patience to let trees grow when you yourself started out! Big fan of your work here in South Africa. Thanks!

I would appreciate it if you could do a video on satsuki azaleas from a tree that has not yet been wired and explain the process of forming pads on one of them . There are pretty much no videos i can find on branch selection and how to create pads on satsukis , Or work on one from the start. Thanks!

Great video Peter, I found on a site that new wire should be wound in the same direction as the old but not in the same groves, that wiring in the opposite direction would create a waffle pattern and could kill the branch, this assumes the wire cuts into the branch. I'm excited to work more on my Urban Yamadori, it's starting to get more back budding and growth, probably won't do anything major this year other than carving some of the dead branches. I have been feeding it some worms that I find in the rain on the pavement, hopefully they will help nurse it back to health.

I was just looking for something like this, I purchased a home last fall that has 2 juniper on the corner , I believe they were more than likely planted in the late 1950's they have been maintained flat top about 4 feet tall but the one is probably 6 feet across with the second probably 4 feet across (the greenery) trouble is no one has ever maintained the centers and they are both solid balls of dead material. All winter Ive been saying I want them pulled, just the other day I thought I should try some bonsai like shaping to them the large one has a huge 12-16 inch trunk. I should mention I am in Minnesota USA

It will back bud but it needs to have light, if you can create some layers so the light can get in, I have one I collected from my moms that was to be torn out, it only had a couple large tuffs on the end and it's sprouting on all the branches that I left growth at the end for, some branches were too long so I cut them and will just carve them as gin.

I sit there with my mouth open and keep asking myself: How do you get such great dead wood? How do you make something like that? You have to live 300 years before you achieve something like that. But what do you have to do with a young plant in order to ... 500 years to get a result like that?

As an ex electrical engineer, I thought that you would prefer to wire in copper!
@plips71755
@plips71755 4 жыл бұрын
You know - not that I know anything - not even the itty bitty fraction of your little finger tip-- but do you think instead of using wire to hold up the heavy top branches in the way - maybe use a long strip of a piece of fabric like a polyester, even cotton about 12-14” wide and as long as needed to hold the floppies out of the way. If the fabric has stretch but can still support, you can stretch it out and let the next layer come down with out undoing it completely. Sorta of like a sack or a diaper for those branches. On this tree you might be able to tie off on the other side or to a bucket handle and filled with rocks for ballast or up to a tie eye on the wall. Just a thought. Thanks for mentioning the copper wire. Did I catch you right that you could use smaller copper than the aluminum because the copper is stronger. If I got that right - how much smaller could you go down from say a 2.5 or 3 mm aluminum to what size copper? I’m having trouble choosing right size wire - it seems you choose larger wire for stronger branches because it takes more strength to twist and hold them in place. And smaller branches can use smaller size. Or is it the exact opposite? I’m getting ready to start a Virginia white pine that have those swooping branches with soft needles. It’s grown up in a bed of Siberian iris and I keep chopping back but looking at it it has developed a interesting base so I’m thinking of doing something with it. And I have a redbud that was a decent size until a 190’ canopy tree fell on it and broke it off. It has finally with a little pruning has come back, is beginning to get decent shape or “taper” again and I need to decide what to do with the “stumps” or it looks like a decent tree on top of a very ugly trunk. And it needs to get dug though I keep looking at your air layering wondering if that might be a better option as it got broke off low to the ground - around 3-3.5 ft so it is several stumps with the prettier come out on each. It’s in the way of a greenhouse location so one way or the other, it will need to move and I raised it from a seed years and years ago. I also have a wisteria that I have been growing in an umbrella shape for about 20+ years but it needs to be moved and I hate to get rid of it. Until I watched you, I would never have thought about air layering for bonsai. I have done trees like magnolia and some hardwood but just because I wanted to save a piece of tree or just wanted another but never did I think of layering and then just chopping off a section and using like you do. Quite the master. I have watched a number of your videos and I must say I still get excited when I see there is one over 15 minutes long. Thanks for all your sharing.
